A 1977 study of rape cases by a guy named Groth and some of his colleagues divided the rapists into 4 different categories. I think the sample size was about 200, so not that big.

Groth et al said that sex was part of the motivation for most of the rapists they studied (but necessarily for all). But it wasn't the primary motivation for any of them. In other words, a guy who gets laid regularly in his normal life with wives and girlfriends can still be a rapist (like Ted Bundy), while sexually deprived men won't necessarily start raping. In fact, one study said about 1/2 of convicted rapists were married when they committed their crimes.

Groth et al split rapists into 2 main groups- those motivated by power and those motivated by anger.

The power rapists were subdivided into "power-assertive" and "power-reassurance" types.

The "power assertive" rapists were the stereotypical "alpha male" / "toxic masculinity" / "hypermasculine" / "overly aggressive douchebro asshole" types. They raped women as a way to assert power over them, often using weapons and intimidation. These guys behaved in a similar way in their everyday lives as well, always trying to assert dominance over everyone they met. Raping women was just an extension of their regular behavior in a sexual way.

The "power-reassurance" rapists, on the other hand, were more stereotypically feminine and openly insecure about their masculinity. They raped women to reassert their masculinity, often after they had been emasculated in some way or suffered some blow to their ego. This might be a married guy who goes out and rapes a random woman after his wife nags him.

Then there were the anger types. While power-seeking rapists were more interested in sex, the anger rapists cared less about actual sex and were more interested in inflicting pain on their victims. Groth et al. split the anger rapists into 2 groups- the "anger-retaliation" and "anger-excitement" types.

"Anger-retaliation" rapists were typically much more violent than the power rapists. While power rapists wanted victims to submit to them, the anger-retaliation rapists wanted to hurt their victims. They have anger, rage, and contempt towards their victims. They often don't care much about sex and only get minimal sexual gratification or none at all from the attack. Many of them actually have disgust towards sex an women in general. They focus on degrading and humiliating their victims. For example, an anger-retaliation rapist might beat their victim and penetrate them with foreign objects without actually having sexual intercourse with them. Some of the violent gang rapes reported in India in the last few years sound like "anger-retaliation" rapes.

The last type aree "anger-excitement". These rapists get sexual pleasure from the suffering of their victims instead of from actually having sex with them. These are the sadistic psychopathic types like Ted Bundy, the BTK serial killer, and others like them. Like the "anger-retaliation" rapists, the "anger-excitement" types tended to inflict more serious injuries on their victims. But, unlike the "anger-retaliation" rapists, these guys actually got sexual gratification from hurting their victims.

In Groth's sample, "power-assertive" rapists were the most common, making up about 44% of the rape cases he looked at. "Anger-retaliation" came 2nd, with about 30% of the sample. "Power-reassurance" rapists came 3rd at 21%. "Anger-excitation" types made up only about 5% of the sample. So the psychopathic sadistic Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Paul Bernardo rapist types are apparently pretty rare.

I personally think most of them are straight up Ted Bundy types. They may not seem like outward omegas but that's the mentality they have, if you read about them. Most serial killer types have this incredibly nihilistic, zero sum game view of the world which is roughly: how much "revenge" can I take on random people? They hate themselves, they hate the parents who abused them, and they hate people in general.

I think nearly all rapists are serial rapists. I don't buy anything about narratives like rape culture because it basically makes rape sound accidental. Whoops, we weren't super clear about consent beforehand so even though the sex seemed normal, it was actually DUN DUN DUN rape. Bullshit. I think "accidental rape" is an excuse told by sociopaths as a way to stay out of jail (and keep committing crimes,) and as a bedtime story for feminists who will take any excuse to frame more men as rapists/potential rapists.

Take even moderately realistic rape themed porn. It's VERY hard to watch. This is NOT ravishment. This is not a girl being quickly convinced because you are so dominant. This a girl weeping and begging for you not to violate her, and you just plowing on, like skinning a live animal. Who in the fuck could think that happens as a mistake? It's probably easier and less horrific to KILL someone.

I think it's about sex rather than power. Rape is present in other animal species as well, and it's certainly not about power in the patriarchal sense that Susan Brownmiller imagines it.

When I was in high school, my sociology teacher briefly talked about this. She said it's about "power".

To those individuals who commit rape, if I have to take a guess, they want to feel powerful, they want to be in control, so they commit rape, to overpower the victim (women), and to make themselves (rapists) feel "strong".

Men of low value are pretty powerless in the sexual market. When I say power, it means the ability to decide how a person lives their lives and have a say. Often men of low value or men who don't fare well in the SMP feel powerless. The women that he desires doesn't want him, he can't convince anyone to accept him, and he certainly has no say who he gets to be intimate with.

A person lashes out when they feel powerless. You don't see rich people commit robbery at gunpoint because they don't believe they are powerless. It's when people are poverty stricken, feel like life's not going anywhere, feel like they don't have a say in life. Those people are more prone to committing violent crimes.

The same can be said about sex crimes. Though I'm no expert in this field so this is as far as I can guess. Aside from power, there's a slew of factors that go into the psychology of rapists.

I certainly don't think it's all about power or oppressing women or whatever. If we take the case of Ted Bundy, he was perfectly capable of having consensual sex with women - he had several girlfriends at one time and was very popular with the ladies - he had no trouble getting willing vagina. He did however have trouble acting out his fantasies with his steady girlfriend (anal sex, bondage, having her play dead, etc) For him, it was about wanting to possess a woman completely and he was turned on by her helplessness and fear. He was also a necrophiliac. This is hardly representative of your average rapist. Ted Bundy was a very 'toxic Alpha' - extremely dominant, psychopathic, intelligent, aggressive and attractive to women, but ultimately a man who felt he was quite inadequate with no real alpha strength at the core. He actually said women were more competent than men and that he didn't feel he deserved the type of women he really coveted.

I think men rape for many different reasons based on their own personal mental health issues, upbringing, views on women, deviant sex fantasies, etc. Some men have raped because they truly didn't understand what they were doing was rape - their ideas of consent were incomplete. Some rape because they want to feel powerful and like they have a life and body entirely in their hands. Some because they get the biggest sexual high from another's pain and fear. Others because they feel they are so entitled to sex that a woman owes it to them after paying for dinner, flowers and they won't accept no.

Like everything else, I don't accept that is black and white and there is one cause. It's as varied in its motivations as people are in their motivations for many things.

When I think of men raping, I automatically think about India. More men than women. Less access to sex.

But I also think it depends on the man. Selfishness, anger, feeling powerless, etc?

Rape may, you know, be like murder; a complex crime that can come from multiple motivations.

The Brownmiller-Koss rape-as-patriarchal-terrorism theory, however, is obviously false. Rapists are not normal men. They're very much outlier men. Only a very small set of men rape, so I don't think they reflect any "male norm".

I agree with you that it's an entitlement thing. More specifically, entitlement taken to the extreme. Alot of different kinds of guys are called entitled by people on the internet, as well as groups of men who hold certain opinions. But rapists are the only truly entitled ones. They want to have sex, but they don't want to try dating like a normal person because they think sex is already owed to them, in the most literal sense, so they "take" sex from women.

For the serial rapist who seeks to rape with clear intent, there is probably also a fetishistic (sic) preoccupation with rape, not dissimilar to that experienced by women who like romance novels. Taboos often have an arousing effect for many people when it comes to sex.

For the man who is not a serial rapist, but somehow finds himself in a situation where there is miscommunication about consent, that’s clearly about just being horny.

I suspect that even in instances where it is about punishing someone, it is also tied to being horny and being sexually frustrated.

When they misread or misinterpret signals from a woman, or a woman changes her mind in the last minute but the guy is too horny or doesn't care for/pick up on the signals, and just goes for it anyway with the hope that she'll acquiesce.
