No. Parents should have to pay for their child, regardless if they like it or not. Women who make more money but don't get custody should have to pay child support just like a man does.

[–]Rufus_Reddit3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So women who put children up for adoption should be liable for child support?

[–]speltspelt2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Terminating all parental rights/responsibilities for parents of adoptees is about catering to the "buyers" in the adoption market, who generally want the birth parents as much out of the picture as possible. It's not about giving the birth mother a 'get out of jail free' card.

[–]beachblokeThat sandwich won't make itself pill0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL, you honestly think parents of adopted kids would say no to a few hundred dollars per month?

How about when a man wants to have the kid be adopted? Should he be absolved of child support too?

[–]beachblokeThat sandwich won't make itself pill0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL, you honestly think adopted parents would say no to a few hundred dollars per month?

[–]HawanjaAncient Deadly Ninja Baby1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, but women who walk out on thier families and leave the kids with the man should be.

[–]Futurist110[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

By that logic, though, should children who didn't get child support from their non-custodial parents for some or all of the 18 years of their childhood be able to go to court in adulthood (as in, after these children themselves will become adults) and to successfully demand child support from their non-custodial parents for all of these years?

[–]HawanjaAncient Deadly Ninja Baby0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Not sure if I'm qualified to answer that question. I agree that a case could be made for that, but I dont know in what form such compensation should come. Maybe if there were a court order to pay child support.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Maybe if there were a court order to pay child support.

What about if there wasn't a court order to pay child support, though?

[–]HawanjaAncient Deadly Ninja Baby0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Then no, they should not have to pay if the child is now an adult.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Exactly why not, though? After all, isn't allowing children who don't receive child support from their non-custodial parents to successfully get this money (child support) later on in their lives in the best interests of these children?

[–]HawanjaAncient Deadly Ninja Baby0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

The point of child support is to support the child, correct? So if the child is no longer a child, but an adult, then I don't see how they should get that money.
I colud see suing the parent for past owed child support, if a court first ordered said payments.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point of child support is to support the child, correct?

Yes. However, if it is too late for that, then it is better for the person who was supposed to get that money in childhood to get that money in adulthood as opposed to being unable to ever get that money. After all, better late than never, no?

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Indeed, think of it this way--if a friend owed me money and then cut off all contact with me for 20+ years, and if this friend later decided to restore contact with me, then it would be extremely immoral (if not illegal) for my friend not to pay me back the money that we owes me even though 20+ years have already passed, correct? After all, better late than never, no?

[–]HawanjaAncient Deadly Ninja Baby0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Yeah that's not the same thing.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly why not, though?

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Indeed, if one has a right to something (whether to vote, to get an abortion, or to receive child support), then one should have an opportunity to actually exercise this right.

[–]Hawanja1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Exactly why not, though

I wouldn't say the child has a right to the money. I would not agree that missed child support payments should then be "owed" to the adult child, like some kind of mortgage or loan. The payments are supposed to support them, as they are growing up. But that doesn't mean they should have a right to the money as adults. It's not a pay-off to substitute for non-parenting. When your child turns 18 or whatever legal adult age is in the country, the parent's financial obligation should end.

But I could see a court ordering someone to pay backpayments, if they were supposed to be paying child support and missed/ignored said payments. But there should have to be a lawsuit involved.

[–]Futurist1101 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So, in other words, you believe that children should be punished for the mistakes of their parents, correct?

[–]Hawanja1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No, but I don't think adult children should get money. I don't think the money is "owed" to them. It was supposed to be used to support them, as children. If they're adults, then they don't need the support anymore, correct?

[–]Futurist1101 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

False; after all, even adults can certainly benefit from having more money in their wallet.

[–]Hawanja1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If you're an adult, then you should be responsible for taking care of yourself.

[–]Futurist1101 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

And yet you would still benefit from having more money.

[–]Hawanja1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's irrelevant. I shouldn't get child support money if I'm not a child.

[–]Futurist1101 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I shouldn't get child support money if I'm not a child.

Wouldn't it be in your own best interests to get this money, though?

So, ya sure.

[–]Futurist110[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good to hear! :)

Indeed, I think that the opposite position (as in, opposite from your and my views on this issue) on this issue is extremely hard to defend unless one also advocates allowing children who don’t receive child support from their non-custodial parents for some or all of the 18 years of their childhood to go to court in adulthood and to successfully demand that their non-custodial parents pay them child support for all of these years. After all, if (former) children aren’t allowed to do this, then what will essentially be created will be two separate categories of children—children who get financial support from both of their parents (even though they don’t need this support from their non-custodial parent) and children who get screwed over by their custodial parents and don’t get child support from their non-custodial parents without being able to do anything about this afterwards.

Indeed, it certainly seems much fairer to give people a unilateral opt-out from paying child support in such a scenario. :)

Anyway, any thoughts on what I wrote here?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

This website is so weird. The userbase mostly thinks of single mothers as irresponsible, and constantly criticizes and mocks black people for having children out of wedlock (i.e. /r/blackfathers and beating the "black kids don't know their dads" jokes to death) yet every time the issue of child support comes all I see is vehement support for a man being able to opt out and have a "financial abortion" and absolve themselves of all financial responsibility for their kids. The double standard is kind of funny.

[–]JuniperSunshineWasting my education on my kids3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, "single mothers are terrible" is on the TRP sidebar, yet I doubt the average Terper would offer to marry a pregnant girlfriend. Double standards much?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not a double standard.

Men who ditch their families and leave their kid to be raised by a single mom are shit.

Women who get themselves knocked up by the kind of man described above, and/or are bitches to their husbands, kick them out of the house, etc. are also shit.

The difference is that women have all the legal power in this area. If a dad wants to leave his family (i.e. be a piece of shit), he is forced to pay child support. On the other hand, a woman can kick the father out of the family (i.e. be a piece of shit) with the full support of the state, and receive a government check, alimony, and a ton of "you go grrl" propaganda.

I don't have a problem with child support on principle. I have 2 problems with the system we have now though: 1) Child support system is fucked up: fathers go to jail, lose the ability to pay, go back to jail, etc. and there is no accountability on the part of the mother, and 2) single mothers get a pat on the back + cash and prizes from divorce (and can force men to pay "child support" who didn't do anything wrong). I think if we completely abolished child support, it would be preferable to what we have now, because it would stop financially incentivizing/enabling women to break apart their families. But I do think fathers who abandon their kids should be required to support them.

I'd be more than willing to "marry" (have a wedding and everything, but not sign the legal contract) a girlfriend, provided she cooked, cleaned, was agreeable, submissive, loyal and trustworthy, and would make a good wife+mom. And if she didn't have those traits, I would use a condom every time we had sex.

Can't speak for other TRPers though. I don't agree with everything on that subreddit, I just believe in traditional sex roles and dislike feminists. So I have that in common with them.

[–]JuniperSunshineWasting my education on my kids0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree that there are some major anti- father problems in family law. In fact, my husband is in a special interest group on the topic. I don't think fathers are going to end up with more rights if they want to walk away at any time, or not pay child support. In fact, many men DO manage to disappear and not pay support if they want to. Sometimes the mother is fine with this, but when she applies for food stamps or whatnot, the government actually tries to locate him. In the US, there is no longer a govt check available, and less than 10% of court mediated divorces involve alimony. These are really two separate issues though. Divorced father's rights and ex-bf (or ex-fling) father's rights. I think in regards to the latter, a risk of unplanned fatherhood you have no say in is the price you pay for all the premarital sex on tap. For married couples and most ltrs , you make decisions as a couple. Women are financially worse off after divorce than men, surprisingly to some, and women also run the risk of marrying a suddenly terrible person.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

yet I doubt the average Terper would offer to marry a pregnant girlfriend.

Well, considering that I have never heard of an orchiectomy failing (well, not yet, at least!), if my future girlfriend will get pregnant, then it will almost certainly be done by some other male-bodied person's sperm. :( Thus, why exactly should I offer to marry my future girlfriend in such a situation?

[–]JuniperSunshineWasting my education on my kids0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True, lol. Although, I would pay to see her face when you explain that to her.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The problem isn't with the idea of child support itself. It's with how horrendously unfair the current system is to fathers, who frequently aren't the "deadbeat dads" they're always portrayed as. Not to mention that married women are financially incentivized to destroy their families. In this brave new world, when women kick dads out of their kids' lives, they're heroic single moms. That's what I take the most issue with.

Also the fact that people who support a woman's right to murder her unborn children and/or abandon it to a different set of parents don't support a man's right to make any comparable decision. That's a real double standard here.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's with how horrendously unfair the current system is to fathers, who frequently aren't the "deadbeat dads" they're always portrayed as.

Completely agreed. :( Also, though, I certainly find it extremely disgusting and extremely hypocritical for people to denounce such men as "deadbeat dads" if their children's mothers ask for child support but not if their children's mothers don't ask for child support in spite of the fact that their children will still be screwed either way as a result of these men not paying child support. :( Indeed, if that isn't hypocrisy and double-standards, then I certainly don't know what is! :(

Kids should not receive income, least of all the same amount as adults. Their money will be controlled by parents anyway. Selfish parents do exist, and I don't want to encourage certain irresponsible people to have kids just to get more money. You have kids because you want and can have kids, not just for their money.

[–]Futurist110[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For the record, I was giving the head of the household a certain amount of money and then giving everyone else in this household a smaller amount of money.

[–]Apexk94 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Men should be able to opt out either way. If a women can choose to keep a child with no day from the father then a father should have the choice to not fund the child.

[–]Futurist110[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

That I completely agree with. :) However, I think that the anti-unilateral child support opt-out position becomes extremely indefensible if a sufficiently large unconditional basic income will be created.

The UK has no universal basic income. We do have a child tax credit which unfortunately the government is too pussy to cut like they're cutting everything else which is a shame tbh. Throwing public money at people for popping out sprogs is stupid.

[–]redmachines2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

You should be able to opt out until a DNA test proves that you are the father. Never been a fan of universal basic income: Who is going to generate the money to fund it? Maybe in some futuristic world where everything is automated and no one is really working this would make sense. But not now.

[–]SoRedSuchAlphaBisexual Purple Feminist Alpha8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Who is going to generate the money to fund it? Maybe in some futuristic world where everything is automated and no one is really working this would make sense.

We already live in a futuristic world where everything is automated and no one is working. America's labor force participation recently went up to 62%.

Weirdly, basic income ends up being paid for largely by the people receiving it. If you own a pizza shop, the government taxes some of your profits and gives the money to unemployed people. Then the unemployed people use that money to buy pizza, and it comes right back to your pockets.

Eventually, you're selling so much pizza you have to open a second location. You hire a bunch of those same unemployed people to staff it and now they're taxpayers too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

What happens a lot in the UK is you pay tax then get that money back in tax credits and all that happens is there's a shitload of expensive inefficient bureaucracy in the middle. Seems to me it'd make more sense to just directly lower tax rates if your goal is to help small business grow.

[–]SoRedSuchAlphaBisexual Purple Feminist Alpha6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Growing small business isn't the goal, it's a side benefit. The goal is to prevent violence, hunger, disease, other evils.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

More businesses and more growth = more employment.

[–]disposable_pants1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

To a point. Eventually technology progresses to the point where growth =/= more employment, or at least where growth and employment don't scale anywhere near linearly. What happens when you can automate many of the jobs in that pizza shop, like major fast food chains are already doing in some countries?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Oh when the singularity comes we're all fucked. But despite Reddit's obsession with it, that's quite a while away yet. Today's AIs are very primitive.

[–]disposable_pants1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

You don't need a technological singularity to automate a significant percentage of jobs.

Look at self-driving cars -- a technology that has a really good chance of becoming practical and widespread within a decade. Truck drivers, cab drivers, valets, and all manner of specialty drivers will be almost wiped out. Ditto for customer-facing jobs in the food service industry when ordering kiosks become more common. Ditto for bank tellers, cashiers, and receptionists for similar reasons.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

But they're all unskilled jobs. Perhaps you could argue driving technically is a skilled job, but it's a very basic skill. Anyone in a skilled job doesn't have much to worry about for a while.

[–]disposable_pants1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

There are a significant number of skilled labor jobs -- management, logistics, payroll, human resources, etc. -- that will be dramatically downsized as millions of unskilled jobs are lost. Other skilled professions will also be impacted: Advanced search programs are automating many of the job functions of paralegals, and lawyers themselves will have less work if there are fewer employees to have legal issues with (I imagine a good amount of labor attorneys are going to lose significant clients and/or billable hours).

But let's say that there's enough skilled labor that must be done by humans that 40% of the population can remain gainfully employed. What do we do with the other 60%?

[–][deleted]1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What do we do with the other 60%?

Instead of making people do meaningless jobs just so they can eat (meaningless jobs which often create hassle for more people, like you), why not just give them enough money to live on? Who knows -- they may do something productive with their time instead of spending it banging their head against a cubicle.

[–][deleted]1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Doing a meaningless job is still much more fulfilling than doing literally nothing. Sitting there doing nothing is just a recipe for depression even if you have money. Trust me on that, was unemployed for a long time and it was depressing as fuck. Even getting a shitty job boosted my mental health massively.

[–]disposable_pants2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Unemployment is depressing because you're looking for a job and can't find one. The social and financial stress is immense.

Imagine instead that there was no need to find a job -- you could live decently without one. Instead of spending days filling out job applications and nights wondering what your family and friends are thinking of you, you can use your time to pursue something you enjoy but can't financially support yourself doing.

For example, I enjoy writing about sports. I've done a decent amount of it, but it's hard to keep a quality blog going (e.g. anything beyond Skip Bayless-level hot takes) when you have a full-time job and if you do anything else with your time (e.g. working out). If I didn't need to work to support myself I could spend my time doing that. Rather than spend my time at a make-work job that benefits no one but me, I would be producing something that a least a few other people get a kick out of.

Not needing/having a job =/= sitting on your ass waiting to die.

[–]impossibleworlds1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Agreed. Hopefully more people will see the light that the majority of the jobs out there are busywork BS now and we'd be better off with a different system. Not holding my breath.

[–][deleted]-1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah I've done that. I was living at home when I was unemployed so I had no bills to worry about etc. It was still depressing as fuck simply because I had nothing to do. There's only so much time you can spend on Netflix or Reddit before you become so fucking bored you feel like jumping out a 30 story window.

You should be able to opt out until a DNA test proves that you are the father

Naw, you're thinking present legal status quo, which still has a 1950s women-are-helpless-delicate-china-dolls bias. Under an egalitarian system, when a pregnancy is discovered, you would have a grace period up until that state's latest date for an abortion to decide if you want shared custody rights + support obligations. If not, she could abort or go to term on her own.

Universal mandatory paternity test after birth proves it's not your child? All rights and obligations automatically terminated.

She skips town and never tells you about the pregnancy until after the delivery? Too late to demand support.

Also if she skips town to intentionally cheat you of your custody rights and you think it is your child, you could take her to court for a paternity test and restoration of your rights and obligations. Or not. Your choice.

There you go. Women's reproductive choice protected, and men's paternity and property rights protected. Done.

Create a universal basic income and everything changes. Wage slavery ends.

There would be room at that time for a discussion on non-custodial parental support ending.

[–]funchy1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

No because the child support is NOT for the custodial parent to spend on themself. Child support is for the child.

If you don't want to ever pay child support, you have the choice not to have vaginal sex with women. Or you get a vasectomy. Otherwise, both people need to take responsibility for the result.

It would also be nice if the men so outraged about child support would help us women out so we don't deal with an unwanted pregnancy. Stop writing laws or making legal judgments that restrict our access to abortion and birth control. Stop letting region dictate law. Stop voting for evangelical candidates & leaders. Reform the Republican party. Make very effective birth control (such as iuds) accessible to all women regardless of age and income. Wouldn't it be cheaper anyway to give free birth control than to pay others food stamps or to risk an unwanted pregnancy?

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No because the child support is NOT for the custodial parent to spend on themself. Child support is for the child.

By that logic, though, how about you support allowing children who didn't get child support from their non-custodial parents for some or all of the 18 years of their childhood to go to court in adulthood and to successfully demand child support for all of these years?

If you don't want to ever pay child support, you have the choice not to have vaginal sex with women.

Frankly, surgical castration is certainly far superior to this advice of yours! Indeed, I would probably rather commit suicide than follow this advice of yours for the rest of my life! :(

Or you get a vasectomy.

Vasectomies can and sometimes do fail due to re-canalization, though. :(

Otherwise, both people need to take responsibility for the result.

Causing someone to exist isn't a harm and having consensual sex is neither illegal nor negligent, though.

It would also be nice if the men so outraged about child support would help us women out so we don't deal with an unwanted pregnancy.

Is getting my own testicles surgically removed not good enough for you? Completely serious question, for the record.

Stop writing laws or making legal judgments that restrict our access to abortion and birth control. Stop letting region dictate law. Stop voting for evangelical candidates & leaders. Reform the Republican party. Make very effective birth control (such as iuds) accessible to all women regardless of age and income. Frankly, I certainly completely agree with all of this! :) Of course, this doesn't appear to be true for liberal U.S. states such as New York and California (or for many/most European countries, for that matter)--does it?

[–]JuniperSunshineWasting my education on my kids0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Unplanned? No? Impossible? Perhaps. Luckily I was never faced with it, but I guess it would have been a possibility while my husband was finishing grad school, for example. Currently I have a chronic illness that requires medication - my husband got a vasectomy when we found out pregnancy wasn't a smart idea any more, but I guess I would seriously consider abortion if he hadn't. Two of our five kids were "unplanned", but we wanted a big family and were just surprised, not unhappy about it.

I am pro choice and pro birth control access. I think babies are a tremendous blessing, but I know not everyone is already a SAHM when they face a surprise pregnancy.

[–]DaphneDKKing of LBFM0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No. Actions carries consequences. 1) Having sex carries the risk of pregnancy. Extreme scenarios (like sperm jacking) excluded. 2) Having a child requires that you do proper mate selection - just relying on the state, that it is going to lift your parential support obligation for you, is not propert mate selection. Have your children with a man who can afford it, or live in poverty - those are your options.

However with child support also comes child contact. No person should be forced to pay to a child for which he (or she) has no equal rights to. Extreme scenarios (like paedophilia) excluded.

As it should be.. History has proven time and time again that people get lazy when they are cared for.. Eventually nothing gets done..

It's amazing what people can accomplish when a little bit of pressure is applied.. To be honest, if we had universal healthcare here I would quit my job tomorrow and go push carts at Kroger for 1/4 the money

[–]gravvs0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

but what if there's nothing left to accomplish. Unskilled jobs will be automated within our lifetime. What if we don't really need someone who's not that bright or talented? Should they starve? [–]rulenumber3030 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think that even where the custodial parent and child have more than adequate income and the noncustodial parent is poor, there should be a small amount of child support payment expected if the noncustodial parent has not surrendered their parental rights. Even if it is only five bucks a month. A symbolic amount to remind the noncustodial parent that they are expected to invest in their child, and to give the noncustodial parent a way of officially getting a record of having been compliant with the expectation of involvement. Want custody later? Well let's see, have you actually been paying that five bucks? No? Well that don't bode well now does it!

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I certainly agree with forcing parents to don't want to give up their parental rights to pay child support (and frankly, I would certainly put this amount at much more than five bucks). However, I also think that people (regardless of their gender or biological sex) should be able to unilaterally give up all of their parental rights to their child(ren)--at least within a certain time frame.

[–]GaiusScaevolusMod TRP/AskTRP/BaM0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm more in favor of a negative income tax like Friedman suggested as opposed to a UBI. I also think a father should have as much right to opt to not pay child support as a woman does to opt for an abortion. If parenthood is a choice, then it should be a choice for each parent.

I don't think I'd support a full NIT or UBI payment for a child, but maybe a small increase for the parent(s).

Under those circumstances? Possibly. Under current circumstances? No. If you want to have a say in whether or not a woman has an abortion, you need to be married to her. If you want to have sex with a woman with no obligation to support her as a husband would, you don't get to help decide what happens after an unplanned pregnancy. "What would you choose if we got pregnant?" is a conversation that you need to have before sleeping together. You men want both the right to have sex with strangers and then the retroactive right to decide whether she should be pro life or pro choice. Once the child is here, its either up to you to help or to the rest of us taxpayers. Yes, it sucks, but the fetus already exists. You are blackmailing her into an abortion by being able to threaten to "opt out" at any time. I fully support much stronger joint custody rights for all fathers not convicted of domestic abuse as well. Mothers should not be able to opt out of letting you see your kids as often as possible either. Kids need dads. We can pretend that they don't, because some people might prefer it, but they do. And exchanging bodily fluids with strangers is just stupid unless money changes hands. That cute ONS is an actual person who can get pregnant and be unable to both work and pay for daycare.

[–]MentathielPurple Pill Woman0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yes. I wouldn't organize a society with unconditional basic income, but if I were already in such a society, I'd support people opting out of child support. The whole purpose of child support is the state making sure that next generation is produced, survives and becomes the most productive member of society possible. If that's already ensured, in the sense that they have access to basic necessities, as well as education, culture, healthcare etc. I see no reason to force someone to give them excess money.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If that's already ensured,

To be fair, though, that could still be ensured to an even greater degree if child support is paid in this scenario of mine.

[–]MentathielPurple Pill Woman0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but the state's interest is to make a productive member of a society, not an elite member. If we're pushing for meritocracy, elite members should be those who put up extra effort, rather than those who get extra money. But then again, this is practically impossible to achieve. But that's not the point, the state doesn't have interests in catering to the child to that extent. Children from single-parent households tend to earn less as adults anyway, so it's better to keep the father motivated and productive and perhaps have him direct money toward a new, more stable family.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

By that logic, though, how about we allow parents to unilaterally give up all of their parental rights and parental responsibilities right now on the condition that these parents agree (at most--if these parents are too poor, then they can pay less than that) to pay the state back all of the money that their children's custodial parent will get from welfare while their child is still a minor (but not a penny more than that!)? Completely serious question, for the record. After all, this will make the current system somewhat fairer to unwilling parents while also ensuring that the state (and thus the taxpayers) will spend no additional money on this. :)

[–]MentathielPurple Pill Woman0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That does seem fine to me, I'm just not sure what's the interest of the parent in that. In the sense that they still have to pay the amount they had to pay in the first place, they're just denied parental rights.

Why is the world responsible for women's unwed children, I'll never understand this attitude. Get an abortion, what the hell was it made legal for? Why is the state responsible for paying for every foolish woman's spawn?

Punishing women without punishing men doesn't work if the actual goal is to reduce illegitimacy rather than just punish women. Look at colonial VA and MA. Colonial VA was hugely red pill and basically only punished women (immensely harshly) for having kids out of wedlock. MA punished both sexes equally. MA had very few illegitimate births and pregnancies, while VA had a high rate.

[–]ProbablyBelievesIt0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Okay, I'm game, but first -

Question: How do you continue to pay for this, as the number of babies carried to term grows? Men would no longer need to fear consequences for unprotected sex, and women would have far less worries about providing for the children they do carry to term?

A single father can only provide so much, after all, compared to the government.

Especially in conservative communities, where abortion is seen as murder.

[–]SoRedSuchAlphaBisexual Purple Feminist Alpha2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wealthy women have fewer children than poor women do, even in countries that have per-child benefits (which the USA does). There's every reason to believe that universal basic income would lower birth rates.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Question: How do you continue to pay for this, as the number of babies carried to term grows?

At least in large part through higher taxes on the wealthy, no?

Men would no longer need to fear consequences for unprotected sex,

Unless we are talking about decent men here, that is.

and women would have far less worries about providing for the children they do carry to term?

Frankly, I'm not sure about "far less worries." After all, an unconditional basic income would (at least in the initial stages of its existence) probably only provide money which is needed for a very basic live and survival. Indeed, if a cis-woman will want additional money on top of that, then she can be more selective with which cis-men she has sex with.

[–]Sunshine12e1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yes, I think that allowing men to opt out would only put more burden (in the form of taxes to cover benefits/programs, as well as the societal costs of impoverished children) on the men (and women) who are more responsible and either do not have children or choose to take care of their children. If we really wanted to reduce the number of children who are unwanted by their fathers, than making birth control and abortion more easily accessible and affordable would be a better plan. It seems that only poor men who are interested in casual sex would be supportive of men being able to opt out, no? Especially as no one is talking about doing away with child support in general.

First off, no: basic income is a fucking terrible idea, because it incentivizes people to not be productive.

On to child support: I support basic LPS, which gives a guy the first trimester to decide if he wants to go ahead with it. If that choice is, "yes, I'm going to support the child," then he's on the hook.

Of course, we would also need to reform divorce law to eliminate female incentives to divorce.

[–]Futurist110[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

because it incentivizes people to not be productive.

Not if freeloaders are prevented from accessing this income (in which case it certainly wouldn't be completely universal), though. :)
