Vegetarian here (would love to be vegan.. But cheese :( ) I made these pork chops for my SO the other night and he said it was one if his favourite things I've cooked yet. And he's not a huge fan on pork. And I'm not a very seasoned chef lol.

I made these adjustments based on reviews:

*used less salt than suggested, basically just lightly dusted both sides

*Cooked chops first, then removed from pan before frying onions

*fried onions just in pork fat/grease before adding broth

*Added sprinkling of sugar to help caramelized onions

*Chicken broth in place of water (used low sodium, but wound up putting more salt in with the onions anyways)

*Added a bit of arrowroot powder to make a thickened sauce (could just use cornstarch or whatever your used to)

*I never covered anything while cooking

*I didn't have Seasoning salt, so I used this Smokey Tea-Aki seasoning I have (along with the reg salt).. Sounds like you could try many different seasonings!

Does it have to be meat as a main dish? If not, I have a Bolognese recipe that is easy to prepare (the recipe looks complicated, but it's mostly chopping and then frying everything together, then leaving it to simmer).

Some modifications:

Lots more carrots and celery (I go by one bag each from Trader Joe's). I like having my sauce chunky.
Replacing one of the tins of tomatoes with tomato paste because tomato paste is more concentrated. Generally, you can add in more tomato without spoiling the taste.
Replacing the herbs with an Italian herbs mix for convenience. Don't be afraid to use a lot of it. You can skip the initial oregano. If it's too much trouble, you can skip the bacon as well without it being too noticeable.
Adding in sliced white button/crimini mushrooms while stir-frying the vegetables, and some butter.

When dealing with people that tend to get themselves everything they need/want....it may be worthwhile to consider something a bit more unconventional and experience orientated. Would they enjoy going to a comedy show with you? What about hang-gliding, snorkeling? You could get them a gift certificate for a massage, or buy some really fancy coffee/tea (if either of them are fans). Would they enjoy going to a painting class? They're becoming more popular (they walk you through how to paint a certain picture, and often there's wine etc available).

Instead of flowers, you could put together a gift basket with a mix of practical and personal gifts (band-aids, candy). Are you familiar with the tile? It's a handy dandy location device. You sync it with your cell phone, and attach it to any commonly used item (keys for example). When you can't find the item, turn on the tile and it starts ringing until you locate it. Alternatively, do they have a good emergency car kit? REI offers many different kinds of kits. You could also consider a portable battery charger.

have you used tile personally?

Yes, I have two actually and I have used them several times. The great thing is that if you lose your item when you are out and about - you can actually mark it as lost - and it will be shared with all other Tile users. That means (and I may be getting the technical mumbo jumbo wrong) that EVERYONE that has the tile app on their phone will be used to locate your tile signal. I think the information only gets sent to your app though (so your item won't show up to everyone else). The range is good on the tile, and the community feature makes it useful as well. I really like it, because there are certain things I'll just put down without really paying attention.

You could still do a group activity gift - but make it so that they can bring their own guests, instead of you going along with them.

How do you deal with texting/messaging in the early stages of getting to know a man? And how do apps like Snapchat play into it? (it's where you take picture messages with captions and send them back and forth, and they last for a few seconds before they self destruct) We're early twenties so it's commonplace to use this app!

I met a nice guy and initially we texted a lot where he initiated but lately it's dwindled down to pretty much nothing bar the occasional snapchat. Not sure what to make of it, he could have lost interest or he may be really busy as it is exam season after all. I really want to talk to him but I don't want to initiate contact! Should I just wait to see if I hear from him via text or just put this on the back burner and move on for now, and assume if he's not asking me out he's not interested for the time being?

Depends on the man, some are very responsive (or really enjoy) receiving texts. Others are less interested in texting as a form of casual conversation. Err on the side of caution and only text if it's to say something if it's positive, useful, or important. Positive covers casual compliments, wishing him well when he has a big meeting or test, useful can cover practical reminders (maybe he asks you to help him remember something), and important covers informational updates ("I'm running 10 minutes late" or "is the address for the restaurant...").

And how do apps like Snapchat play into it? (it's where you take picture messages with captions and send them back and forth, and they last for a few seconds before they self destruct) We're early twenties so it's commonplace to use this app!

I've never used this app, and I would limit it heavily. Try sending a genuinely unique one (if you draw a sketch or bake something for him, take a picture and say "something for you to look forward to").

Why not? Initiate meaningful contact though - not just bored/time killer conversations. People today seem to gravitate towards texting and snap chatting, which is a shame. Pick up the phone and actually call him! Say that you're walking to grab a coffee and you wanted to hear his voice and say hello. Ask him how he's doing, and mention that you're going to 'x' event/party etc. Be casual and fun. If he doesn't answer, just leave a cheerful message and ask him to call you back when he gets a chance.

I think it's a lot harder to get to know someone if all you do is text with them, instead of actually spending time together or having full-fledged conversations.

I think of small talk (general exchange that you could have with literally anyone) as fairly pointless. It doesn't really tell you anything about the other person (in term's of suitability, compatibility, personality, personal philosophy). Talking about the weather, sending memes/emoticons/photos of whatever back and forth instead of swapping actual stories or having full-fledged conversations.

Don't message him!!! It's just another shallow/brief/meaningless communication from you. Pick up the phone and call. People always think "how are you doing?" is some great conversational opener, when the truth is, a lot of the time (especially in texts) it just comes off as "I'm bored right now - entertain me."

Call him and say, "I've been swamped with tests and schoolwork, I'm taking a much needed coffee break and I thought I'd call you up to see if school is driving you crazy too!" Figure out your own wording, put some personality behind it, smile while you're talking and laugh. You have the perfect excuse (both stressed students trying to get by).

It's easy enough to turn the conversation to favorite places to study, if he mentions a coffee-house, tell him about your favorite spot, maybe mention that you generally end up there a few days every week. You get the idea. Create conversation, signal interest/availability without beating him over the head with it and see if he responds.

I did end up calling and we spoke for nearly an hour! I think he was a bit bewildered at why I wanted to call at first and he asked if something had happened. It was a really nice convo I thought, we spoke about a range of different topics and it lasted for nearly an hour before he said he had to go to bed.

I'm so glad I called instead of having yet another superficial, never ending text convo where it's awkward and you connect very little with the person.

At the end of the call he said we will go out soon (as a statement/command instead of a question which I found hot LOL I think there's a lot of dominance with this one ) so will just have to wait and see on that. The more I get to know him the more I find him attractive, like this guy seems like a real catch and he's hot as hell to boot.

I have to practice being patient because I have a habit of jumping to the worst conclusions when I don't hear back from someone and working myself up over it, and I like that there's no pressure to keep on responding to texts because I find it draining.

Thanks once again for the advice to call instead of text Phantom, I would never have thought of it myself and will be using it in the future :)

We were still speaking over texts up until 2ish weeks ago but I don't think it is going anywhere since we still haven't scheduled to meet, the texting and snapchatting has become so sporadic and remain unanswered for days; I think there might also be an incompatibility in terms of religious values etc. I mean he did apologize for the lack of response over exam time but it keeps happening and I'm not sure I'm prepared to keep holding out when it seems like there's a notable lack of interest (my last text remains unanswered and it's been nearly a week, he knows i have exams but that seems beside the point).

I think the thing for me to take away here is to let the guy initiate in the very early days and up until we are seeing each other often. I don't mind picking up the phone myself to see how they're doing but only once something has been established, else it only seems to prolong the inevitable if they were not interested enough to begin with!

Life gets busy, but if he's chatting back (even if just in the form of photos) then I'd say there's at least some interest. Especially if you had such a great conversation. There's no reason why you can't (or should worry) about calling him up to chat on the phone again. when you have some time, just give him a call. All the better if you call when you know he's in class or busy - so you can leave a message and then it will be up to him to return your call.

It's possible that he doesn't really know what to do, that he's just busy and scatter-brained right now, or maybe he is just a bit more passive and laid back. I would suspend speculation and judgement until after you go on a date with him. If his interest in you doesn't pick up after the date and he doesn't make more of an overt effort to converse or meet up with you again - then that would be the time to politely wish him well and move on.

Don't lose hope yet, and don't overthink things too much.

Thanks for your reply :) I feel a lot more reassured reading that, I was working myself up by thinking about the situation too much :/

Yeah that makes sense but I'd feel a bit stupid if I kept calling him and chasing him up if he's not really reciprocating on the same level and/or not that interested or has other girls as a higher priority. There could be many explanations for his current but he seems very confident, almost over-confident, and he's popular and social so doesn't seem to be lacking in that department. He's had 1-2 gf's before and even described himself of having a bit of a partying past! But I guess it could be anything and it's best to reserve judgement until after we go out (if that even happens!). I have a busy few days ahead of me so I think I might just take a bit of a backseat for now in terms of initiating contact :S Might send a few snapchats though.

I would definitely like to get to know him and hang out but only if he actually wants to. And I don't know how long to 'wait' for him to ask me out before it becomes a lost cause? Or should I just carry on with my life and continue talking to him and try not to get impatient? Apologies if I sound really negative, I just don't want to get my hopes up too high only to get them dashed :/ I wish he'd just ask me out already!!

Do you think it would be a bad idea to delete him from my social media (mainly snapchat, though I doubt it'd be noticed)? I mean it's only been a week since he hasn't replied to my last text but I can't decide if I should, because I keep wondering if there may be a legitimate excuse for him not to get in touch. If I delete him then Ill stop thinking about it because I'll have made a decision and won't be in this limbo.

Then again, he has updated his social media/been online in that week and no-one is so busy that they can't reply to a text for a week if they were interested. I don't want to look rash or butthurt because once I do delete him there's no going back obviously!

Hey there, it's up to you. If you decide to 'keep' that door open, I'm not really sure what the benefit would be. At this point you'd be holding onto hope more than making an informed decision grounded in reason I think. Also, if/when you meet a guy that you are really interested in and that wants to pursue you, do you really want to have some ambiguous 'maybe-but-likely-not' option looming in the corner? I like to invest my energy and time where it actually does some good and means something. Every pic/text you send to this guy, could just as easily be spent doing something more productive (like finding a better man). In your shoes, I don't think it's necessary to 'block' him, just delete his number and move on.

There's no reason to keep this guy in your life, and no reason you should feel badly about only making time for actual friends and potential prospects. :0)

I've always read on RPW to not initiate contact with a man you're just getting to know as it shows that if he's not initiating he's not investing in you and you won't know if he actually does want to be with you or is just going along for the time being. Even Wingnut has been adamantly against initiating contact.

I am more relaxed on this topic - not only because I used online dating (in which case it is very much to your advantage to send out messages), but also because it really makes things easier for men when you create opportunities for them to ask you out by showing a little interest. Personally I have no issue with women asking a guy out to say coffee, or mentioning that you'll be at a certain event. Both indicate interest, make it easy for him to step in and either agree, or mention that he'll see you there (in the case of the event mention) or if you'd like to go together.

You mention that you were texting with him a bunch initially, but that didn't lead to more substantial conversations (which is why I think it's better to avoid texting and just pick up the phone). You really don't lose anything by reaching out in a general way. If he doesn't bite or show interest, it's easy enough to move on.

There's a big difference between creating opportunities, and asking every man you meet out on an elaborate date. Courting today is so messy and ambiguous, and I think it's generally prudent to make sure he knows that you are receptive to interacting with him more.

My SO and I have been texting pretty much every day since we started dating, which is a bit over 4 months now. Usually we text each other good morning, then maybe a few throughout the middle of the work day to see how things are going, what's bothering us about work, that we miss each other, etc. Around quitting time we will connect again with what our plans are for that night and there is always goodnight texts too :) Some days there's more, some days there's less. It's pretty low key though, we don't worry about getting back to each other right away. If something is important then we'll call on the phone. I don't really use snapchat that much unless I wanna play with the filters..

I think it's fine to initiate contact. People think about this stuff too much. Just do what feels normal and keep it casual. Initiate with something simple but you can phrase it more like you're expressing an interest an activity but he still needs to do the actual leading. "There's this awesome coffee place near work I've always wanted to try" "The weather this weekened is supposed to be awesome, I think I wanna hike on Saturday"

Organize it like an essay lol. That sounds stupid but do it like this:

Paragraph 1

Intro sentence: (hi how are you!)
Thesis sentence: what is the main point you want to convey about your life? (I.e., it's so busy but all positive!)
3 supporting sentences: 3 sentences that demonstrate your main point (i.e., one about school and that you're getting good grades, one about family and how everyone is doing well, one about work and how you're frustrated but you think it'll pay off soon)

Paragraphs 2, 3, 4

One paragraph for each sentence that came after your thesis (in my example it would be one for school, one for family, one for work)
They don't need to be long, 3-5 sentences is just fine. Or whatever works.

Concluding Paragraph

Summarize how excited you are about all those things, and don't include any new information
Then I'm assuming you'll be a nice person and ask how they have been also (:

Okay -- so I find this super odd and just wanted to share since you brought up the topic. Groomsmen broke up with Girlfriend shortly before our wedding. After about a month I defriended her on FB yet Groomsmen AND husband are still friends with her. Like... I just think this is backassawrd haha. She was a wonderfully pleasant person but her and Groomsmen just didn't mesh well and couldn't see themselves having a harmonious marriage so they broke up in search of other partners (lots of tension over religion how they would raise kids)

He's dating a new girl, and he's still friends with all ex-girlfriend's fam on facebook. I just think it's weird. Maybe it's me! My husband, groosmen, and exgf's brother all go skeet shooting together on the weekends -- I'm the only one who finds this super weird.

Right when I am replying to this comment, underneath the box where I am typing there's hyperlinked text saying "formatting help" and if you click it, it will show you some formatting tips. There's also the reddit wiki that is more thorough.

You don't necessarily have to explain why you edited a post. If I am editing typos or weird phrasing I usually don't explain it. If your edit will disrupt comment continuity (for example, if someone has already replied to you, and your edit would make their reply seem unnecessary/not making sense) it would be helpful to clarify it was an edit. It really depends on your style, some people will write out and explain they edited a typo, I do not find that necessary.

Whether deleting a comment is good or bad depends on the circumstances. I sometimes delete my responses if I find them to be redundant or if I find out that someone already wrote what I said in the span of me writing the comment. It's not really 'necessary' but I also don't find it bad to do.

I find it bad if it's a pattern of the person and I notice they are constantly backtracking. I also really dislike it when a person deletes a thread they posted (usually a thread where they asked for advice and didn't reply to any of it or participate in any way on their own thread, then delete it after everyone made contributions to it). It's not illegal of course, but it's really annoying, especially when you notice repeat 'offenders'. Some people delete it so their SO doesn't find out and I understand that, or they don't want it to show in their submitted history (which is why it's best to have a RPW-only account in case this is a problem and your acquaintances know your main account).
