Let's talk about nails!

My nails snap off or snag during housework and other day to day all the time.

I can't keep nail polish nice, it just chips or gets nibbled off as my hands smash into stuff

I refuse to glue acrylic nails to my fingers and ruin what there is of my natural nail

So I have no advice, but I'm following to see if anyone else can help me out too!

My nails are thin and brittle. I can't grow them out at all, plus they get torn up when working. I'm also trying to learn guitar which is impossible with even slightly long nails (HOW DOES DOLLY DO IT????!!)

I just keep them short and clean and try to keep them moisturized in order to keep the skin around the nails looking nice. I guess that would be my best advice. Use a good hand cream. I use an almond and milk hand cream by Burt's Bees.

Edit: Also, I can't use acrylics because they make me feel like a cat with tape on its feet.

classic, natural, neutral, clean. no weird shapes or colors except holidays or vacations. natural nails. i use essie polish and do it myself. im a grad student so i cant afford to get my nails done, but essie polish lasts a while.

I keep a square cut and highly recommend Perfect Formula Ruby Pink. It looks natural like a French manicure but you only need one coat once a week and no one can tell when it is chipping. It is a nail strengthen but leaves nails healthy and shiny.

My mother was always a huge proponent of having your nails done. Both because it’s a small bit of luxury you get every couple of weeks, and because to her, no professional woman should have un-manicured nails.

I found a local salon I go to every 2.5-3 weeks, always do shellac so it holds up well and stays shiny. I like getting something clean that goes with everything- often French manicure or a neutral colour.

You’ll notice that getting your nails done makes your overall appearance more refined. I do believe it’s almost a necessity for a working professional, or at least elevates them.

If it’s something you really can’t afford I’d say invest in an a filing set and classic colours like OPI’s “bubble bath” or “put it in neutral”. But shellac is the real way to go.

I go for the classic oval shape since it slims my hands! I used to do square, but the kept breaking on me during housework too.

I think pushing the cuticles back is really under rated. It makes your nails look longer and neatens up the whole look. I prefer a gently rounded shape and then paint whatever colour I feel like, I like Barry M or Kiko. My favourite nail colours are lilac as it looks good on my skin tone. Top coat makes on top makes it look refined. I like using quite a thick hand moisturiser as I wash all my dishes by hand and don't like using gloves. lavender at night helps me sleep and something plainer for the day.

I keep them short and clean. Short is more convenient for my lifestyle and my husband doesn't really get anything out of longer nails on women. I usually paint them with light polishes (I go for pink) because it doesn't show nearly as much when you need to redo them.

I was a nail bitter my entire life and I recently just stopped (about 4 months ago). I’m a student so I don’t have money to go to the nail salon every second week. I bought a nail hardener, and a nail kit and I learnt how to file, polish and shape my nails via YouTube. All of this month I stopped using my nail hardener and my nails are so strong on their own now. I keep them medium length.

I used to love acrylic nails but can’t have them at work. I also can’t have painted nails... so I just keep them bare :(

Clean, unpolished classic oval.

I hate chipped polish and I’m also pretty rough on my hands. I’ve found that clean nails that looked trimmed is the best way to go for me.

And I really like how the oval shape looks on my hands.

When I do them (which isn't super often lately) I do the short square-shape and just get a gel manicure because they last a long time. It's like $30 for three weeks worth of did nails.

I get Biosculpture gel applied every 2 to 3 weeks. My nails are long and oval shaped. They're red at the moment. My husband is into pinup style, so stockings and red nails it is. We're going on a family cruise at the end of the year and I already know that I'm going to get a mermaid metallic gel that matches an incredible sequin gown I have.

I love gel especially for more delicate shapes like oval. I can’t keep regular polish on my for more than 3 days without chipping because I’m very active. I have lean fingers so I do a shorter squoval usually since it’s a flattering shape. Square is nice but the corners snag. Get a lighter or nude color if you want to go 3 weeks without getting it off since those don’t show the grow out lines as much. Groupon usually has great deals on gel manis. Small luxuries like this are a nice way to treat yourself and feel more feminine. I do my own gel nails. It cost under $100 in supplies and is easy to learn.

Use OPIs hard as nails (I think it’s called that?)! Keeps your nails healthy under polish and keeps the color polish on better than anything else I’ve tried AND bonus it makes your natural nails stronger!! It’s like $17 but worth the investment

My nails are thin and peel no matter what supplements I take or nail treatments I try, so I keep them short with a pop of bold or sparkly gel polish. My husband thinks it’s really cute. I taught myself how to do gel polish, I get the kits off of eBay and it’s really not that hard to master (YouTube videos taught me), for the price of one gel manicure you can get an entire kit with the LED UV light and all the tools.

I keep them short-length and round. If I paint them, I use a peel off base coat in case I'm in a place where I can't remove the color. I think shellac is a good option if your nail color chips due to the daily course of life but I don't like the removal process personally.

I’ve been using Impress press on nails and omgggg. You can get them at Target, Walmart, or any drug store really. They cost $7 and they stay on for like a week. (Even longer if you have some super glue handy.) I used to get my nails done every 2 weeks with acrylics and this is so much easier. They’re tasteful and symmetrical too! I’ve got real been telling everyone I know about these lol

I know nobody wants to hear from a man on this thread, but I just can't overstate the importance of nice nails. It's something I notice right off the bat. A nice, simple, clean french manicure is magical. I also think length is very feminine. I am just one man with his opinion, but men do notice these details. Thank you for having this conversation.

I used to get a shellac manicure every 2-3 weeks but found that it too big a chunk in my budget. My nails grow very quickly so by week 3 they looked awful. Long term I did find the gel damaged my nails a little, they seemed to break more easily in the months after I stopped.

There's something gorgeous about a manicured hand, but I find that natural nails with clean, shaped nails is also lovely. So now I keep them fairly short, shape them, moisturize them and keep them clean. When I'm the mood for a manicure I use "Gelous Advances Nail Gel Coat" as a base and top coat over red OPI nail polish. This gives you the gel finish but can still be removed with basic nail polish remover. To speed up the drying I apply a top coat of "Seche vite" over the whole thing. I've found this at home manicure works amazingly well, usually lasting about a week (a total miracle for me, regular nail polish can chip within the first day). If you're looking for an easy, non damaging at home manicure, I would highly recommend this!

I highly recommend hair vitamins. They did wonders to my nails! No breakage or peeling anymore even when I haven't cut them in a month.
