Absolutely true in my experience (inverse sexes). Not so much in the physical appearance sense, but absolutely in the mental and emotional areas.
The reasons can be very complex, but I find the following to be consistent:
A lower self esteem person might also settle for someone they don't find physically attractive because they don't have the confidence to pursue their actual type, which sets the relationship up for failure.
We subconsciously mimic the love dynamics we witnessed as children. After 3 years of dating my ex, we were essentially a replica of our mothers and fathers even though it was completely the opposite in our 1st year of dating.
According to attachment theory, if we had insecure attachments to our caregivers growing up, we tend to be drawn to partners who give us the LEAST of what we say we want. For example, an anxious person will likely go for an emotionally avoidant partner because as much as they crave intimacy, they are subconsciously terrified of being abandoned and therefore pre-empt it. An emotionally unavailable person might be drawn to a clingy person and proceed to push their partner away as they feel "trapped", but subconsciously crave openness and connection.
I feel that whoever we attract is the direct reflection of the cracks in our mental, emotional and social health. Hence the paramount importance of having a healthy self esteem and awareness of generational cycles before getting into a relationship.
[–]xonbuhg 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Does attachment ever change according to the theory?
[–]cobraCL 4 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
Definitely! Once a person identifies their unhealthy patterns and where they come from, they can start to patch their foundation and challenge themselves to change behaviors in their dating styles that aren't working. It's also notable that different romantic partners might trigger our anxious/avoidant tendencies to varying degrees if they also have an insecure attachment style.
A FANTASTIC resource: follow @thesecurerelationship on Instagram. Brilliant in depth information, presented in an easy and digestible format. It provides plenty of practical "new moves" to challenge our typical behaviour, communication tips, ways to support and empathize with partners etc.
Another account, @anxiousheartsguide, is also a great account to follow. @thelovingavoidant is an honourable mention.
Can't vouch for attachment theory enough, finally been able to break some bad cycles because there were similarities in all of my former relationships. Self-awareness is power, and with mindfulness and accountability we can break any cycle we choose to.

I appreciate you bringing all of this up. I don't have social media, do you happen to have any recommendations on books about Attachment Theory? There's a lot of them out there, wondering if you've read any and liked them.

Gah damn, hit the nail on the head. Most of my girlfriends have been clingy, and I now know what to work on. Time for more research! Thank you internet stranger!

So happy my response helped! Good luck in your ventures toward self awareness, its the most noble pursuit of them all 😁

Does me attracting nobody mean I have no cracks in my mental, emotional and social health then?
[–]cobraCL 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The cracks are maybe what is impeding your magnetism? I know there are many factors, but how we reflect our inner state outward can have a pretty fucking radical effect on how we are treated by others.
Not only romantic prospects, but literally everyone, even complete strangers.

This feels like a very woman centric view. While accurate for many women - I don’t find this accurate for many men I know. Maybe this is more true outside the US.
I know many men who are confident, fit, make well over $200k/yr, Ivy league educated, securely attached, etc. yet they’re single and can’t find a mate. (These men are dime a dozen in Silicon Valley)
They end up with what they can get - which is usually pretty bad.
Cultural differences could definitely be at play - I find it very interesting and unusual that highly successful men (wealthy, emotionally intact and outwardly confident, fit and attractive) would struggle to attract women.
Wealth alone does not pull women. Stability plus a bit of social influence, good social skills and outspoken personality however, DEFINITELY makes women actively compete for a man's attention. If the man in question is successful, attractive and (key words) outwardly confident and charismatic, I struggle to believe that he will not have options. Among those, will definitely be mediocre women and attractive/decent women.
I am not at all familiar with official seduction communities, but anecdotally the "missing ingredient" tends to be social boldness, self-assuredness and persistence. I've seen guys who are not rich, not tall, etc get some great girls (wholesome and hot) and are happily married with children now.

This is so fascinating and true.
Thank you kind stranger 💜

This is so true it actually scares me
[–]bobyd 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
wtf that hits too close
[–]Snakehead004 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely true. That's why I alwsys caution against the douchebag advice often found on this sub. Just be the best version of yourself and everything else will work out.
[–]nbh1995 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yep both but I would say mainly, mentally...if you are insecure you will attract insecure people. It doesn't apply only to women...watch your friends and how they behave. You know the classic "tell me who your friends are and Ill tell you who you are" phrase.
[–]Emmy-bby 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
Yes it does. If u attract “crazy” women or women who are manipulative I can’t trust u too much. If u say every girl you’ve been with is crazy I’m out bc it probably wasnt her, the common denominator would be you. For the physical aspect women do date less attractive men from my experience, the women is usually like 2+ points above the mans appearance.
[–]daddysgotanew 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Women do not date less attractive men unless their self esteem is in the toilet. I’m a solid 7 and I’ve never had a 9 for a girlfriend. Women of that caliber are not interested in me whatsoever. I don’t even exist in their world. I’ve gotten a few looksmatch equivalent women but they didn’t stick around long
[–]vroomvroomski 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Are you talking about physical attractiveness? If so you're completely wrong. I'm short, skinny, and average looking. But I've dated girls that people would consider 10s (models with 300k followers, business owners, singers etc. that are all hot asf). And their self esteem is fine, some of them think too highly of themselves lol.
The reason is because I'm successful, make good money, good social proof, good ambition, and have solid game.
Girls care about how you make them feel. Looks is just one part of it.
[–]daddysgotanew 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
You just said it. You make good money. You’re probably taking these women out all the time and buying them shit. Try working at Wendy’s and see if they care about your “game” or “ambition.” (They wouldn’t, they’d laugh at you). They’re users. As long as you understand that. I’d rather have a woman want me for my dick, not my wallet
[–]vroomvroomski 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Lmao bro I don't buy them shit, most of the girls probably spent more on me than I have on them haha. I'm also not that rich like I have much richer friends that don't get these girls. I do have status like I'm verified on Instagram and friends with a lot of famous people.
But girls just like to be around me because I have a good life and they want to be a part of it. And then the dick keeps them hooked.
[–]thrway_123 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
How did you get verified on ig
[–]vroomvroomski 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm signed to a record label and their marketing team was able to get me in some press releases that helped me get verified.
[–]thrway_123 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So you’re a musician huh. Cool stuff
[–]Emmy-bby 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You have the confidence to get those attractive women which is what some men don’t understand! If u go for someone “out of ur league” you might be surprised that most aren’t that shallow abt looks like that!
You’ve got to have the confidence to get more attractive women and also maybe u aren’t a seven if u can’t get a nine? Not to mention that number is subjective so what u considered a 9 might actually be a 7 to someone else! If they are that shallow abt ur looks maybe u aren’t finding good honest women just girls who wanna party.
[–]Snakehead004 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I get the first half but..
For the physical aspect women do date less attractive men from my experience, the women is usually like 2+ points above the mans appearance
Could you elaborate on this...? Are you saying that women are more likely to date men less attractive than themselves? If so, why?
[–]Aesteic 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Men place a higher value on physical appearance than women, whereas women value things like status, money, humor, etc more.
Look at Adele or Lizzo for example, they're very rich and famous but guys don't fawn over them the way that girls would over someone like Rick Ross or Post Malone (both of whom are pretty conventionally unattractive)
[–]Emmy-bby 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly this!!
[–]thrway_123 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Adele lost weight. She is hot now
Women aren’t as shallow! Our requirements are loose and bendable whereas men have strict set of standards they want in women. Exactly like the other comment post Malone is not conventionally attractive but ong so many women love him! He is slightly chubby, has face tats, and long hair not a typical model but we drool over him! We care about how u make us feel, my husband constantly tells me I’m out of his league but I love him to death he is the most handsome man in my opinion, and it’s bc he makes me feel loved and wanted
[–]xonbuhg -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Beauty and beast right?
And what are the crazies like?
[–]Emmy-bby 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I consider it okay to call an ex crazy if she cheated, was abusive, manipulative, or was constantly starting fights! But even I’ve been called the crazy ex bc I broke up with him when he didn’t want me to, and guess what!? He came back about four times after that 😂 if it was really a crazy ex they’d want nothing to do with her
[–]TheKindKroissant 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
True for me. At least personally, I get a bit turned off with a man who’s dated a certain “type of girl” 😌
[–]xonbuhg 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
What type?
[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The crazy ones like her
[–]xonbuhg -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Lmao what makes her crazy?
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Im being brutally honest
[–]mistahARK -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Eh
[–]ResponsibilityKey427 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Yes physically.
If you are unattractive then overweight and unattractive women will have interest.
Hot guys get hot girls. simple.
[–]Effective_Elk_4719 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Rich guys also get hot girls more often than not.
[–]Health077 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Is 70K rich?
[–]Effective_Elk_4719 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No. Just above average depending on your age.

What if your normal weight and in shape but still don’t attract anyone, and if I do, it’s someone who is severely overweight
[–]Recktion 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm betting you have low self esteem and you don't realize you're attracting other girls.
Fat girls are more desperate and will often show their attraction to you more. Plus since you think you're more attractive than her your low confidence isn't getting in the way.
[–]dheidjdedidbe 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So I don’t have any self esteem, good or bad. Even my friends say that they have never seen girls show any signs of interest in me. Hell, girls make it so obvious when they flirt with other guys. Even in high school when everyone’s hormones were raging I was left out. I’ve been to parties when I was in college were there were three times as many girls as guys and was completely ignored, when every other guy had someone.

then i am nothing, finally i have achieved it.
[–]MistyMaisel 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think this is generally true for all sexes and sexuality. Whether you're looking at attachment theory, love languages, or anything else, who we are attracted to and who we attract says a lot about who we are, where we are at in life, and what we offer. And typically also a lot about who your parents were, weren't, and the dysfunctional pattern they gave you as love.
[–]Zealousideal6669 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It more reflects on what type of girls you're into
[–]dheidjdedidbe 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well I must not exist since I attract no one
[–]BigChestCliff 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I m say this. This quote is completely incorrect. And history bears witness to this. You should not believe everything you read on the internet.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes. If you are a lazy redditor you will get no women (downvoot). If you are a hard working redditor you will get some women (updoot). Go get them redditurd.
[–]ShameAffectionate15 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Ofc its not true. They have no idea who u are. its all looks and assumptions.
[–]Ninedropemoff -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
So it’s all physical
[–]ShameAffectionate15 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah. Ask urself they know nothing about u besides ur looks. U may look like a noce guy a bad boy etc. thus the assumptions part.
[–]Ninedropemoff -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So since I attract good looking women I am considered a attractive guy, thanks
[–]ShameAffectionate15 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
yeah why not?
[–]jjboy91 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What if you attract no one ?😅
[–]gillmanblacklagooner 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Common sense will say Yes because people will rely on how do you present yourself. But as we are all aware: humans are complex. There are tons of creepy negative people attracting good ones (and vice-versa). You might find liars, frustrated, weirdos… a lot of people arguing on both sides. As long as you are focused on yourself, you’ll find easier to attract the woman you like. It takes time. I’d say the type of man you are can help you to attract girls simillars to you.
[–]Live-Ad-6309 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah. Goes for your friends too. Like attracts like.
