I’ve had this problem my whole life, day in and day out. I’m not even ugly dude, I just don’t know how to break the ice. Also I’m a introvert, so it always feels strange walking up to random women and starting a convo. I use to do it a few times in college but now that I’m out, the only real time I see a lot of women is mainly at the gym.

There's a study where people assumed they'd be happier not speaking to strangers, but both participants were happier talking. People vastly underestimate how much other people want to talk to them, probably for innate biological reasons.
[–]BluePsychosisDude2 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
One of the biggest and most profound social realizations I've had is that so much of being social is win-win. It's not a zero sum game, you help others, they help you. It's a pretty staggering effect! Yes, I pointed out to a guy at the mall that I liked his hat, it's good to do this kind of thing for sure.
[–]singlecellfromearth 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Hey 👋 I'm about 4 days late to the party but I have a question for those of you who do this. So this spreading joy and good natured ness, do you ever find it develops expectations from the other party if you see them again?
Like say you had a nice short chat with some stranger in public. Then you see them again and you're kind of expected to talk again or it's awkward. And if you do keep talking and the interactions go well, it almost feels like an obligation. Do you ever feel like you lead people on? Or you see the disappointment on their face after things don't develop the way they want it to?
It's like planting seeds, if you're not going to water it, why even bother in the first place? (Of course this is least attachment forming if you never see them again, then everyone is happy) Could also be a me thing, maybe I'm not handling it correctly.
[–]loofyd 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
By all means, set yourself a rule that you'll back off immediately if it goes badly, that's fine.
This scares me.. Any examples you can give of how things can go badly ? And what can be done to smoothly flee the scene ?
Will put my mind at ease

College and High School activated my cold approach spidey senses. Would randomly start up conversation with girls over funny dumb shit. Being out of college made me introverted but when us introvert get relaxed, we tend to shine.
I consider myself an introvert. But once I start talking to people, that whole anxiety goes away. Same with parties. I’m not a fan. But once I get there I’m a completely different person. It comes down to do you want to enjoy time? Or dwell on what you didn’t do? But it is a juggling act. I agree.
[–]Speedsloth123 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
This is NOT the best way to go about learning cold approach. You’re training yourself to be disingenuous, which is unhealthy and ultimately not gonna get you laid as much as being genuine (lots of girls sniff that out immediately).
OP is right that you should train yourself to talk to people, but for the love of god don’t ask randos, male or female, for directions to somewhere you don’t need directions to. Eventually in a convo with a girl you like she’ll be thinking “wait a second, did he even want to go to Starbucks to begin with?” That’s fake af and you’re just wasting people’s time.
INSTEAD, Provide value to people. Compliments are great. Funny observations are great. Practice free association from the get go by making a cold read about them.
Don’t shoot yourself in the foot from the get go by being disingenuous, you’re just letting your subconscious know that you need to lie in order to make conversation

Love this. There is nothing wrong with being up front about how someone is attractive, asking for numbers, with the idea that sex may happen in the future. In fact being up front about that as early and as often is another way to learn and communicate with people. You get a slew of reactions when you're upfront in that way. All reactions are good for you to experience. But I understand when you're out there and you just want to jump ship and you haven't actually approached any body in a meaningful way, asking a question you already know the answer to is traction, nonetheless
[–]britishgent60 4 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
I agree and disagree. I think this is about building confidence. And is not necessarily going all in to get a number or close on a date. Most of it is just conversational skills that most have all but forgotten during lockdowns or C19. But if you are approaching a specific person, obviously this is not the right psychological approach to take.
[–]Speedsloth123 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Again, I have to push back against this. You are always talking to a “specific person.” Other people should be treated as individuals, not just practice dummies for building your confidence. Asking people directions when you don’t need directions is wasting their time and yours. Pick topics that will make both of your days better

Go message all of your Facebook friends and see how many actually want a conversation. 50% won't respond, 25% will say 1-2 things, 20% might have a decent conversation with you online, and 5% will rekindle the relationship and might actually want to meet up and talk frequently. This has been my experience with messaging a bunch of my Facebook friends. It's a numbers game, but I actually am grabbing drinks with an old buddy from college because of doing this which is cool!
[–]Reccognize 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So true. People barely even talk to each other nowadays!
As many said. We rely too much on the internet. And live our lives through others. And derive our happiness through what they’re doing. So when we go to have our own experiences, they never live up to what we thought they would. Too many people keep their heads down. Even if you say hello to the old guy at the shops. It could make his day. You never know how lonely people are.

yes. COLD APPROACH doesnt mean "talk to girl and get laid / married" - it means TALK TO ANY GIRL. the more you talk to them, the more you will ease, the easier will come then the flirting, the more success you will experience. experience not as in "sex" right away, but numbers, dates....says the most insecure mess of a sociopathic recluse.

I think this is what people misunderstand about this stupid “pickup” trend. It isn’t about closing the solid 10 super model. It’s about conversing with as many people as possible. And being the most confident and open version of yourself you can be.

There is no point getting numbers if you have no intention to follow it up. This is why it is better to try and get to know people before you ask for their number. Or at least work on conversation skills before you consider looking to go further with people.
Don't do it. Just ask for their number. When you find that you can't even utter those words, is where you begin.

I warm up by complimenting 10 people before I run sets. Just compliment them about something and move on. Helps developing a good vibe and improves observation. After that I run sets and they work out really well. My social proof game ahs improved a lot because of this. I can open any conversations anywhere.

That’s kind of the whole idea of this post. And it works because I’ve done it many times in multiple cities. Strangers are somewhat interested when you disrupt their normal routine.

Parents have conditioned children to not talk to strangers out of safety fears and this carries over into adulthood. Not to mention the news keeps throwing negative things into your face day in and day out until everyone things everybody is a serial killer until proven innocent.
Once you start approaching you'll find most people are genuine human beings that aren't out to take advantage of you, that's when the approach anxiety stops.
Your post was worded as if you were talking about people-at-large, not OP. But now I see you were referring to OP's conditioning.
I agree. There’s always a small percentage of society that can ruin the image for everyone else. But you’ll be surprised how happy strangers are when you talk to them. It’s something they are not used to and a novelty in this age.

At this point I think it’s too late for me, was always the quiet one in school and I have next to no social skills, every attempt to break out of it seems to sink me further and I’m not sure how to get out of it, loneliness is just inevitable I think for some people. Woe is me etc, but are some people just a lost cause due to past experience? I love this sub but it is genuinely tough to try and absorb the advice when it feels like it just doesn’t work for you in a way.
[–]xymemez 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you say all these things then you will be those things. Nobody is a lost cause. Breaking out of it is stopping yourself from talking about yourself like that. You can only grow the seeds that you plant. Make sure you focus on your successes and LEARN from your failures rather than dwell on them.
It might help to go for extra low hanging fruit. I.E. in my city, if I go on a walk before 7AM i can say "good morning" to at least 10 people and get a response back. Sure it's just a "good morning" but someone might hit you with a quirky response and suddenly your on your feet using your wit. Maybe I say the right thing or maybe I blunder it but either way I keep walking because I was on a walk anyway. My mindset is: I'm on my walk, not out to say good morning to people, as long as I get around and back my walk was a success. I say goodmorning and have those 3 second interactions with 5 people thats even better! Maybe I said good morning to the lady with earbuds in and didn't get a response because she couldn't hear me, no harm no foul. Or the old man said "Nice weather huh?" and I said "Good how about you!" because I wasn't thinking, I laugh it off and remember to actually listen to people instead of staying all caught up in my head.
Be nicer to yourself, you're not a lost cause.
[–]Yagametrics 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Be okay with being a loser. Like evaluate yourself and if it comes up as a loser, say, "that's okay!" I love telling my friends or peers when I have loser reflections, observations, actions. They look at it as me being hard on myself but they dismiss that I'm laughing about it. I love my loser self. And I'm not always a loser but I love noticing when I am. For bonus self-love points, really consider that this life you were given is a wash, you're too far in the hole and you don't have the natural aptitude to make up the difference. You may die without having amounted to anything. Be okay with that.

[–]Labranth 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was like you and I was very stressed about it. Then I just stopped caring. I was a very shy kid in school and went through heart crushing divorce of my parents, which only enhanced my loneliness and anxiety. The moment things changed for me was the moment I stopped giving a flying fuck about whether or not someone likes me or wants to talk to me, male or female. I just don’t give a single monke banana about what some other person would think about me, to a healthy degree of course, I don’t run in circles smearing shit on people, you get what I'm talking about. This "anxiety" just stopped existing for me because I was no longer afraid of being alone. Alone forever for life.
And now I wish I didn’t do that sometimes, because the number of my friends increased significantly and everyone wants to spend time with me and hear my opinion on some shit. And girls are apparently attracted to that too, when you have something more important to do than them.
So stop caring + improve yourself = success.
I am probably the biggest introvert on this damn sub. And was the ‘loser’. I can go weeks at a time alone if I wanted to and it wouldn’t bother me. But I realised I wasn’t a loser, but was just being lazy. You need to realise that people don’t make much effort like they used to. So if you put yourself out. People will appreciate it.
[–]CenaSmackDown 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
What's the point? They don't like it and it rarely turns into anything. You're better off getting a job then hiring an escort.
[–]TheQlymaX 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Obviously you're someone who hasn't done it for an extended period. Even if it doesn't result in any escalation, there is a significant change in your mindset (only as long as you train this muscle tho).
[–]CenaSmackDown 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You can talk to women in bars or church or something. I don't think it's a good idea to hang around malls, beaches, and other public places trying to get a phone number. It's full of teenagers and it will look suspicious.
[–]Yagametrics 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]Yagametrics 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Try a little harder. You responded to TheQlymaX with some more specifics but for some reason not with me. Your original response was, "what's the point, hire an escort." Then you said, "bars and church are okay." And then I ask you to get into it a little more and you say, "Cold Approaching?" You can do it, dig a little deeper.
[–]CenaSmackDown 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree that flirting with women on your daily routine (coffee shop, gym etc.) can open up opportunities later on and it's good practice.
I agree, you probably aren’t going to find the next soul mate. But it’s how you apply it. You could find someone that shares an interest. And meet a lot more people and grow your circle.
[–]DAB999 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I'm getting into day game. Can you tell some techniques to keep the conversation going, and become familiar in few minutes with the person you're cold approaching?
I think you are overthinking. If you are talking to a complete stranger, why does it matter if you can’t keep a conversation going? Nobody is going to judge you for flaking a conversation. You just need to pick up on what they’re saying and try and shadow them.
[–]DAB999 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I wanna get the numbers that's why. If you have some techniques you're welcome
How many approaches are you doing? And are you asking for their numbers at the end of them? Essentially you want to get good with rejection, not conversation. Think of rejection like death, when you're at peace with it, nothing else matters. Asking for their numbers perfectly puts you in a position to be rejected. A warm conversation doesn't have much room for rejection. Not saying you shouldn't have warm conversations but if you can't handle rejection well, the warm conversation sours quickly and in my experience stings more. (Not always tho).
[–]c2kink 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I was all on board with this right up to the point in which you advise to lie to the person you’re talking. Don’t say you’re a tourist unless you are… be the real authentic you.
I agree. But I go to a lot of cities so maybe this is only unique to me. I do a lot of travel, so technically am a tourist. But you could also use it in a playful way. “I feel like a tourist in my own city”.
[–]mario610 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I would like trying to talk to more people, but I never know what to talk about, parents say to practice, but I can't practice if I still don't know what to talk about. Doesn't help I have Asperger's
[–]xymemez 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well it's difficult to get into deep conversations with strangers off cuff. People are usually busy going along their day, and we don't even know what topics we share in common.
Sometimes practice is simple greetings, or complements. Maybe a "hi how are you" or "I like your outfit!". Whats important is how you say these things. A very quick "Hi, how are you?" is more a casual acknowledgement of someone entering your personal space or your normal talking voice range. However it might get a little weird if you give a slow "hello, how are you" with the inflection in your voice implying you're looking for a longer drawn out answer.
Practice is key though! Best of luck, don't be afraid to embarrass yourself a little bit. Just don't take yourself too seriously and laugh it off.
You say hi, make them do the rest. If they don't oh well.
You will never have a ‘deep’ conversation with strangers. There’s the occasional person who really clicks with you. But unless you are meeting more than once, it’s unlikely you are going to enter a deep conversation on the spot, with someone on the street. But it doesn’t mean you can’t form a relationship with someone like this over the space of a few weeks or months.
[–]decapitate_the_rich 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I am like deathly afraid of other people, doesn't matter if it is male or female, attractive or not. I have PTSD from stuff that happened as a kid and not sure I will ever be able to get past it. I don't really go anywhere but the grocery store and work anymore, and I work completely alone, so I don't ever really talk to people ever, at all. My people all live thousands of miles away. The only place I can afford to live in my is a wealthy conservative military suburb and there is a major values mismatch. I'm not sure what I can do that doesn't start with "get rich and move."
Just start with small steps. Go on walks. Say hello or good morning to people. Go to a store you wouldn’t normally visit. Ask what they recommend. Most of this would come down to facing your fear. Which I guess is the fear or rejection or not being wanted. The best thing to do is start with small steps. And eventually you may be confident enough to join a group or a club of people. And over time regain some of your confidence.
[–]decapitate_the_rich 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah i need to make adjustments. I go on walks, but in the middle of the night so that i won't encounter anyone. I don't normally go into stores, or if i do i use the self checkout specifically so i don't have to talk to anyone. I spend a great deal of effort trying to avoid all contact with people, my fear has become so deeply ingrained i don't know what to do about it. I have been in therapy by whole life but it is grossly ineffective. I have honestly lost hope, and no longer follow this sub as I doubt I will ever be in a condition to attract people of either sex into my life.
[–]TheQlymaX -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Whatever you do, facing your fears has to be the way. Running away from your current situation most likely is not going to change anything in the long run. But what you might need is a temporary break from your regular everyday headspace, a change of perspective. Psychedelics have been shown to do that and alleviate depression longterm, but I don't recommend taking them alone the first time.
[–]decapitate_the_rich -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I want to face my fears head on but where i live i am not given much opportunity. People have told me on here that i have to move ASAP, but it may be years until i am able. I desperately need out of my situation but I have nowhere to go. I have lots of experience with psychedelics and have been trying to find some for years, but I know so few people its been impossible. Found some mushrooms last year through a coworker but got ripped off, they barely did anything.

It’s weird how talking to Pepe can completely change their day. It all comes down to mood. A lot of people go a lot of time without talking to other people. It’s amazing what a conversation can do.

Warm approached a lot of people in high school and college. Was class clown cracking jokes. I'm the listener type, usually, I gave an ear to the story they was telling me. This works even better when traveling! Being a total stranger in a foreign land brings the curiosity out of you. Challenges you. Changes your perception.
The key is being present and having a let live approach. Being out of college turned me into an introvert, it just takes more energy for me to get into that frame.
It does feel good not gonna lie!
Yes, everyone has their own story. It’s amazing how much you can have in common with complete strangers.
[–]KongDonkey_92 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

One technique I use to overcome this is I just ask strangers for directions in the middle of the city. Start with everyone, to warm yourself up. The old man. The business person. The grandma. The mom. The cyclist. The dude having a cigarette. The person waiting for a bus.

Lol, yes! I love blowing up my fears. It helps to cut them off and look at what exactly I'm afraid of.
It’s because the gym is not a good place to talk to people. She is there to work out. Not to flirt or chat. I’d never approach a girl at the gym unless I already knew her.

think that's the wrong mindset, that like saying grocery stores, people are there to shop, work people are there to work. I mean you can talk to a cute girl anywhere really, i just need to work up the courage. ill get there

Humans are weird. They complain that their alone but hate to be approached. They think it's creepy etc etc etc. Well it's their own fault
It’s weird. I’ve had some crazy reactions. But it’s always the feminist crazies who get upset. Like “omg a man is talking to me, I must make a scene”. But 99% of women just love conversation and a variation to their normal routine. And you’ll find are happy that you are even talking to them.
You're doing good bro. Don't let limiting beliefs get to you. Approaching other humans is completely legal and no one can stop you. Just have fun while your at it
Who hates being approached?
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Mostly girls
Not even. I approached yesterday and today. I made two girls days and three others who were genuinely flattered.
[–]mingolaflare -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I really need to do this.
I realized you’re right, I am always in my own bubble. My bubble is big, but it’s still a bubble.
I talk to people all day at work as I’m in sales. I have a really awesome group of coworkers (we’re all actually friends not just work friends, many of my coworkers being friends from high school/college). I have roommates, and I have friends. My roommates have friends. But outside of that I don’t really put myself out there much and talk to new people. And talking to new people means meeting new friends, and of course meeting women.
I’m not really afraid to chat random girls up, it’s just that I don’t try often. I make the excuse that I’m tired of talking to people since it’s what I do all day with work. And that’s true, I am normally pretty “talked” out. But that is still an excuse. I can absolutely try and put myself out there more.
Thank you for helping realize this. Great post.
Is it because you don't have a car or are near areas where girls are?

Problem is that all I do is work and gym.
[–]Disturbed_Aidan -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I don’t really care about talking with strangers, it doesn’t bother me. I’ll talk to anyone but generally prefer to keep myself to myself and not bother anyone.
What does bother me is seeing an attractive female and wanting to not bother her.
I know women generally would find it flattering for a guy to politely ask her out and give her attention, as opposed to just stand around looking at her and not saying anything. However I just seem incapable of expressing myself.
Part of me is terrified of what will happen if she says yes.
I have a lot going for me. I’m not a bad looking guy and often get smiled at by women. But I’m too polite that it holds me back.

We are conditioned to be afraid of each other.

I understand your need to help and most of your advice is actually very good, but, as a girl… Don’t do this.
I mean the starbucks conversation part. It’s too formal and unrealistic. No one speaks like this and if you do she’s going to realize you don’t actually need directions to Starbucks and you just want to get her number somehow (even if you don’t end up asking for it) and this can turn girls off because we feel that you are not treating us like normal human beings and just some sort of fake game you have to get through to get with us. We notice it right away, believe me. We aren’t dumb, we know you have a phone where you can literally enter “nearest starbucks” and it’ll give you directions.
I suggest you instead be more chill, less formal, just speak as if you were speaking to a guy! Start the conversation by coming up to her , wave at her to to get her attention and instantly a friendly smile when she puts your eyes on yours. Try asking more less traditional questions and change it up a bit by saying “you know at what time Starbucks closes?” Or “do you know if name business opens today?” IMO these kind of questions don’t sound as fake as asking for directions. Once she responds, Don’t say “I understand and appreciate your help. I wish you a good day” and instead say “ok then, thank you so much, u have a good day” And offer a smile. Honestly at this point you can even take it further and be like “can I actually get your number? You’re like, hella cute” With eye contact and a friendly, even nervous cute smile. I know it’s harder said than done, but it’ll save your time (and the girl’s time) if you just be more real and be yourself.
Again, not trying to shit on your post at all! Just giving my perspective as a woman and what I’ve seen works with me and my homegirls. Wish you boys the most of luck :)

Hey buddy, there is a small minority of people that actually believe that. So try not to frame your world view around that because it hurts yourself. If by the off chance you do bump into someone who feels like this you will be able to immediately tell by the tone in which they talk to you in which case you can politely bow out of the situation.

I would say on reddit they are the majority

You're living in an echo chamber and hyper-focus on negative opinions

"I" statements would be more helpful

What do you mean?
What's popular on Reddit is popular to center-left young men who don't have boomer responsibilities or experience. No offense redditors 😉

I agree with u/xymemez , don’t let these personal views & outlooks affect you so much. When the get the best of you, you let them win. These views you hold will negatively impact your psyche & ultimately negatively impact your attempt at a social life and also, definitely avoid people expressing these views!
I don't have the data to accurately say it is one way or the other. I can say this idea seems to be negatively impacting your life. You stand to benefit a lot by not being the one to mention this idea and if someone else does think this sort of thing, not engage them. Best of luck, hope you can find some peace.

This is an excellent description of how to work on building your approach confidence and conversational skills. Bravo!

I get what your saying about not flirting with girls which is fine, but you can still have fun banter. I do this with almost every girl I encounter just because it’s more cheerful and charismatic then what they are used to. Don’t have to flirt at all, but getting really good at fun lighthearted banter with guys or girls will go a long way. Banter leads to witty remarks that you weren’t even aware you could do. And if anything ever happened with your girlfriend, you will be fine since improving fun banter with everyone will get you quick on your replies
In the past I’d obviously be more overtly flirty. But now I don’t need to approach people as much. I still do it if I’m bored or just want to have a bit of fun. But you can always change your behaviour and cater it to your current relationship. I have quite a few girl friends via my girlfriend. And I have good banter with them because we are comfortable with one another.
