Even if you find a girl at 18-22, you're going to change a lot in the 5-10 years after college and what brought you together then may no longer apply. Ergo, spend those years learning how to meet girls, maybe have a serious relationship or two, but don't focus on finding "the one." You'll almost certainly be wrong.

The one thing I wish I would have realised my first year is that you pretty much have the green flag to go up and introduce yourself to anyone. Just go up and talk to every one you see.

As a 33/m, I can also tell you this: keep many, many, many girls in your pocket. Some girls will pretend to be that charming girl, who likes everything you like, is affable, kind, affectionate, great in the sack, and too good to be true. One day, she may change and show you who she really is, and if you have more options, you don't get trapped by her game. Make as many friends as you can, network, and don't be a tool or asshole to people. The more friends you have now, the better off you will be post college. Finally, meet women, make friends, but find hobbies and things you like to do. Once college is done and you are working in your field, you look around and say, "I have no more homework to do ever again . . . FUCK! Now what to I do? Most of my friends are married, have kids, and I don't have any hobbies." This gets down to the root of /r/seduction, women are not the ultimate answer. They are the ultimate gift to an ultimate life.

It's important to keep the context in mind here. Nobody's saying that you shouldn't want to meet a great girl, get married, have babies, etc. (or just meet a great girl and spend a few awesome months with her). Usually when people say not to get stuck in the "trap" of having a long-term-girlfriend in college, it's from the standpoint of "because that's what I did and now I regret it since we broke up and I missed out on all those other girls." Or it's from the standpoint of "if you've been with little to no girls, you don't know what 'great' even means, since you have nothing to compare her to."

Not only is there a 99% chance you won't marry your first girlfriend, but there's a pretty good chance you won't marry the second or third either. So at the very least, you probably shouldn't focus on finding a long-term-girlfriend, especially not within the first few days/weeks of college. If you happen to find a girl you really like, and it happens to lead to something more, that's great. Nobody's really knocking that. But a large number of guys who had LTRs in college later came to regret the fact that they didn't get to meet/date other girls in that time. That's just often how it goes.

The other thing to keep in mind is that this will likely be the only time in your life when there's at least several thousand attractive, (usually) smart girls who all live within a 3-mile radius, and in a situation where drinking/partying/hookups are the social norm and usually encouraged. So if there's any time in your life where you shouldn't focus on finding "the one," it's now. Not to mention, you're likely gonna end up doing shit after college that will separate you from your friends, and probably your girlfriend as well. Most people I know met their spouses through work.

An exception to this though is if you get some experience earlier on in college, and then end up meeting a girl who's really awesome. Now you've at least had some experience with women already, and you've got some general college experience, so at least now you kinda know what you're looking for, and you know what you'll be missing out on (and whether or not it's worth it).

How can you know that a girl is 'amazing' if you haven't had enough experience with 'awful'? I don't think it's possible to judge anything before you've tried it a couple of dozens of times. Be it food, music, movies, wine or people. You simply lack the ability to objectively assess the situation until you've gained enough experience to have a baseline to compare with.

You're right, but guys should learn how to get the one they're into. A fresh AFC won't know how to attract a smokin hot 19 year old. And for all freshmen, read the Game or Magic Bullets or something. You don't have to make pick-up a hobby or something, but know the basics of attraction.

I was social proofing like crazy by junior / senior year so getting girls wasn't hard, plus I'm naturally talkative. But man, I wish I knew the basics the first two years.

That and I wish I wasn't a Bible study teacher -_-

That girls, especially college-age girls, are really easy to meet/hook-up with. All you have to do is be not-unattractive, at least slightly interesting, not creepy, and talk to them.

Helpful conversation starter examples:

If you have class with a girl: After class remark on something funny that happened, share a laugh, and say "Hey, I'm so-and-so, we should hang out some time. Want to grab coffee? Can I get your number?"
If you have class with a girl: Show up 10 minutes before class and strike up a conversation. Many people are waiting in the hall between classes, great opportunity here. "Hi, when did Prof. X say this project is due? What problems will your group be presenting on? That's really interesting, you would think that X means Y, but really it's more like Z, do you agree? ....... Hey it was great talking, we should do this sometime outside of class. Are you free Friday for lunch?"
Other relevant openers: "Did you do the reading for class? I couldn't figure out this part...", Maybe you're next in line to a girl, "I've never been here before, what's good? ..... Thanks for your help, I'm going to try that! My name's X, by the way, would you like to: sit with me? Grab some coffee sometime?"

So easy to strike up convos, and most college students generally have a good bit of free time. Also, they're really interested in meeting new people, and there are always tons of activities going on. Carpe diem, new college students, for this many young, attractive women will never be as open/accessible as they are now, and you will likely not have nearly as much time/ability to meet, engage, and enjoy them.
