A lot of it has to do with what happens when women do try to negotiate:

Their study, which was coauthored by Carnegie Mellon researcher Lei Lai, found that men and women get very different responses when they initiate negotiations. Although it may well be true that women often hurt themselves by not trying to negotiate, this study found that women's reluctance was based on an entirely reasonable and accurate view of how they were likely to be treated if they did. Both men and women were more likely to subtly penalize women who asked for more -- the perception was that women who asked for more were "less nice".

"What we found across all the studies is men were always less willing to work with a woman who had attempted to negotiate than with a woman who did not," Bowles said. "They always preferred to work with a woman who stayed mum. But it made no difference to the men whether a guy had chosen to negotiate or not."

I'm honestly not sure how you fix that.

I think we need to look at the occupations here. I'm not sure so correct me if I'm wrong but I feel women's positions are more competitive, because generally their jobs need less qualifications or they are commonly shared with many.

For example: let's look at a receptionist position or something in HR (is that sexist to assume?) It's very competitive and there might be situations where I can see a woman already satisfied to just have a position, that they were able to beat out many others and they don't want to push their luck any further. Compare this to a potentially dangerous construction job as a typical man position and there are others qualified but only few crazy enough to do it so they can ask for more.

I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that the occupation demographic favors men when it comes for negotiation opportunity.

Quick we need a new corporate position to fix this unfairness - Professional Encourager. So during interviews someone can hold their hands and constantly whisper in thier ears that they can do it! You are strong and smart and you're worth it! Because you know the excuse will be the intimidation from the competitive, "male" corporate environment.

Let's not make the same exact mistakes the "wage gap" myth proponents are making. This doesn't compare like vs like. Some jobs you negotiate a salary, others you don't have a say.

When you choose your career to maximize income, you gravitate towards positions with labor shortages where you end up with a lot of negotiating power.

When you choose your career based on lifestyle and go after fields where there is a labor surplus, negotiating salaries is pointless.

A software engineer getting his MBA to advance in the highly technical financial industry is going to have a ton of negotiating power. Someone with a fashion degree who gets an MBA to try to advance in some sort of luxe creative space is going to be competing against well connected trust fund kids for a very limited number of job openings.

There's also the problem of not needing to negotiate. A man and woman applying for the same job put an entirely different set of pressures on the employer. Failing to offer women a competitive salary will expose the employer to a great deal of legal liability and public relations headaches down the line. When you have the full force of the government basically holding a gun to your boss's head to make sure you get paid well, you probably wouldn't bother negotiating either.

I am glad this popped up, I brought up yesterday, this is America, you're worth what you can negotiate. If you are worth 20K more than offered, you need to prove it, display it and tactfully ask for it and be prepared to defend your statements. If you can't do it, you get the offer, not the 20K more. You don't get 20K more just because you think you should get it, you get it because you put up an argument that shows you are worth it (and then you complete the actions of your argument to continue to show you are worth what you asked for)

Whereas men always get a raise simply for asking and risk nothing.

In my Sociology of Gender class, this was argued as one of the big reasons for the wage gap. It was a pretty unbiased class despite my pessimism and cynicism.

"Women are concerned about the reputational risks of negotiating, and they have cause to be concerned. If I negotiate for an increase in my salary, and I have a male boss, the research suggests that I will be penalized in a way that my male counterparts will not be. If I have a female boss, she’s going to penalize both males and females, so it’s not like I get any benefit for working with a woman."

Some of that is sexism. Women that negotiate salaries are seen as acting outside their gender role and being threateningly assertive, whereas men that negotiate salaries are just "driving a hard bargain".

Kinda like how the men that DON'T negotiate their salaries are penalized for not matching up to the gender expectation of being assertive and self-assured.
