Also, the statistic is misleading. 33% more women graduated than men. The phrasing makes it difficult to understand how wide the gap is.

Every day I'm more grateful I got through college when I did. Mid 2000's. There were changes going on around me that I was grandfathered out of. Mandatory "gender course" to graduate, for example.

It is normal for men in power to get there and stay there by putting women above men. But, Obama and Biden take the cake. They are extraordinary in their back-stabbing of fellow men and their kowtowing to women.

For anyone who doesn't know, Biden was the driving force behind the most gigantic piece of anti-male, female-entitlement legislation every passed, the straight-from-Orwell named "Violence Against Women Act", or VAWA.

Obama has been kissing feminists arse since he was on the campaign trail. Whether he's Lily Ledbetter'ing us, putting down fathers on father's day, or putting feminists onto the Supreme Court simply because they are 1) female and 2) feminists, he's gone out of his way and continues to do so.

This is a tragedy being lauded as a victory.

However there is a bit of gallows humor. These same women will be looking for husbands. Most women don't want to "settle" for a man who is less educated than them and/or makes less money than them. They basically feel they deserve a guy who is out of their league. So when they get out there in the dating world after their government has discriminated against boys in their favor, they come to the stark realization that there are FAR fewer "eligible" bachelors than they were led to believe. Large groups of educated and self-reliant women end up competing for the same small pool of educated men and most of them LOSE OUT. I can't help but feel an enduring sense of schadenfreude at this poetic justice. They deserve it. They deserve to be miserable and miss out on a meaningful relationship with a man they respect. They deserve to eat sour grapes and regret what feminism has done.

Because if women have shown us one thing over the past 50 years, it's that they will only take notice of a problem when it affects THEM.

The unfortunate thing is that when we decide to address this it will be positioned as women being the victims: women have to shoulder more of the burden to support their families denying them the right to stay at home with the kids, women have harder times finding suitable husbands, and so on.

So we will decide that failing men en masse is a bad thing not because it hurts men but rather for it's effects on women.

/just like women are the primary victims of wars . . .

Dismissing liberal arts degrees and other non-STEM degrees as being of little note is a canard. People with these degrees become lawyers, journalist, teachers, lobbyists, activists, politicians, etc etc.

People with these degrees mold our country, they make our laws and guide our social policy. They populate the middle tiers of management and government departments making a myriad of micro decisions, the sum of which is enormous.

The importance of these degrees is conveniently forgotten by some.

Was the exact statistic pulled because he may have only thought it was a 1% difference, which would be alright for him to praise but if he knows its a 25% difference which as a president he probably should than he is very sexist.

We've had this for a while here in the Nordics. The downside is that women still aim for less challenging jobs. For example over 50% of graduating medical doctors are women but on average they do 20-40% less hours than the male countetparts which leads to insufficient services. And no, it's not because of they have children. They simply don't want to work as much. When the sufficient level of income is reached they take off the rest of the hours while the male doctors push for maximum income.

Seems like the point is being missed. This is graduation rates, not acceptance rates. I don't advocate equal outcome, only equal opportunity. With that said, I don't think males are being given the same opportunity to go to college and they are being marginalized in high school. It seems as if we have an educational system that focused on women at the expense of men.

So more of a question than a claim, but doesn't a good portion of this gap make sense given the logic behind the wage gap? When you consider the relatively high paying professions where a college degree is not required, men dominate those fields. Whereas when you consider the relatively low paying jobs that do require a college degree (e.g. social work, teaching, public health), women often dominate those fields.

It would seem to me that the balance of our currently-common gender roles would lead toward more female college graduates than male. Of course, what "seems" to be logical is not always the case.

It doesn't seem that Obama specifically referred to the fact that more women are graduating college than men as a "great accomplishment." I do not appreciate this biased misrepresentation of the facts.

Afternote: This became much longer than I thought. Sorry if it's long winded, but these are some thought I had about this statistic.

I was wondering if anyone had any information on enrollment rates? I think someone already said that men are more likely to enroll in harder degrees and end up dropping out before graduation. STEM degrees are favored by men, and few women choose those degrees (even though there are programs that give incentives for women to enroll in STEM) in favor of humanities.

There seems to be some kind of societal pressure for men to pursue STEM degrees rather than any type of humanities though. I really wish more men were interested in becoming teachers to offset the amount of women in K-12, but men as elementary school teachers, especially kindergarten, probably deal with quite a bit of discrimination and stereotyping from parents (which is so backwards). And honestly, it seems that teaching curriculums at the university level require little effort - I've seen so many people breeze through education majors, when teaching in reality is really difficult. I think that school teachers should have at least a master's degree in the subject they teach, and need to be paid more, but our education system doesn't see it that way. Teachers are so important and it's not fair that we only have women's perspectives for 12 years straight ....

But back to my original question - What if instead of fewer men enrolling in college than in the past, there are more women seeking higher education than ever before, especially with programs that give incentives to women to do so, and programs that favor women (Gender studies).

I think there may also be a difference when it comes to class/gender cross sections. It seems that this gap would be smaller for those from higher income backgrounds, and much, much wider for lower income backgrounds.

For example, if you are a black or latino male from a poor urban area it seems more likely that you will end up in jail or find a low income/disposable/dangerous job like construction work, garbage pick up, kitchen work preventing you from going to college, especially if you have to pay child support which is very common. If you are a black or latino woman, everyone around you your entire life is "empowering" you to go to school, and there are plenty of programs that focus on helping that demographic get in to school versus trying to keep men out of jail.

The jobs uneducated women seek probably pay less than the ones men do, so it makes sense in a way that these women might need to go to a community college at the very least in order to find a job that isn't as dangerous as something like construction work which is high demand with plenty of hours available, but pays the bills and allows them to take care of their children (i.e. becoming a certified nursing assistant, 2 yrs of community college = decent pay vs. a day care worker/house keeper, 0 years of education = shit pay). Women who have kids can't afford to work 16 hours a day, childcare costs too much, and there's an overarching societal agreement that they shouldn't have to work jobs like construction. (I don't mean that everyone agrees with that, but I know plenty of men and women who would agree with that) The idea "Disposable men" seems to be a driving force in this.

For the higher income men and women who go to college, it may be that men are more entrepreneurial and forego college all together and are able to make a good living without an education. I know this is an anecdote, but I know several men that have gotten jobs with their family's company and make a great living because they are already capable of doing the job without a 4 year degree.

There are more men in the work place than women, despite the graduation rates being higher for women. This is obviously due to life choice of child rearing, so even if women are becoming more educated, they may be doing it for personal advancement and not necessarily to compete in the job market - which could also explain why more women choose humanities over STEM degrees. It may be that women want to pursue English because they grew up loving literature, but end up being a stay at home mom anyway. It may be that males are pressured into being the bread winners, so they pursue high powered fields in math and science.

I still think it's a big problem that significantly more women than men are becoming educated, and I do believe that there is a bias towards women in the institution, but there are also plenty other factors that play into the gap. In the same way I think it's cynical to believe that there is a gender wage gap, I think it's equally as cynical to believe that every institution in the United States is favoring women over men and causing men not to graduate or become educated.

We need educated men as much as we need educated women. We need as many women in the work force as we need men. We need as many men taking care of their kids as we need women to be educated mothers. Men and women are different from each other in many ways, but one gender is not inherently better than the other, and I think that both feminism and men's rights are quick to point out how manipulative the other gender is and how feminism or the patriarchy are these huge conspiracies.

On the other side of the coin, more men get raped than women in the USA- the first country in the world where that happens. We're #1! USA! USA!

The reliance on filed complaints appeared to understate the problem. For 2008, for example, the government had previously tallied 935 confirmed instances of sexual abuse.
