I try and call other women out on this kind of thing as much as possible. The problem is that for their whole lives, when they have heard about abusive relationships the image of a man abusing a woman has been attached. The idea of a woman physically abusing a man seems ridiculous, it just doesn't happen, you never hear about it, The men should just deal with it, they probably did something to deserve it anyway, etc.

The best way to change this is to stop this attitude wherever you find it. Bring this up with your coworkers, and ask them why they find abuse funny. If men and women are equal, why is this okay? Why are men expected to put up with being punching bags while women are not? By laughing about it, they are helping perpetuate the harmful attitudes they hold, and as a result they are pretty much facilitating abuse. Let them know that it's people like them who prevent abused men from coming forward.

Then wait for reaction and say, "See, it wasn't so funny with the roles reversed. Boom lesson learned.

But what would your response be if they said, "No its different because a man can defend himself and a woman can't"?

You should have quipped back with, "BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Domestic violence! Fucking HILARIOUS! Rape is pretty funny too." The disgusted looks you'd get from said coworkers would be total proof positive of their hypocrisy.

Of course, on the other hand, I've been hit by just about every woman I've ever dated - then again, I tend to like tough women. Working for a decade as a roadie, the few women I met in the business were tough women that had to work three times harder than any man to get respect in the "boy's club" of the industry. In my relationships, violence is typically mutually consensual and considered foreplay.

To this day, even though I got out of the roadie business five years ago, I have very few girlie-girl female friends among my (mostly female) friend base.

I can tell you that my wife, still to this day, can not understand why I called the police the last time she hit me.

The "trouble" it cause and the police being idiots, were of course, confused and knew they should arrest me even though I had called them... Their confusion, only lead to her being even more confused.

Not just women but a great many men don't understand why a woman hitting a man is wrong.

I know a guy who got divorced because his wife was a raging alcoholic and beat him at least twice a week. He would come in to work with bruises and black eyes, and not once to my knowledge did he hit her back. She got custody of the child. What a great role model their daughter will have growing up.

They sound really immature, I hope they are young. You need to show them the double standard w/ a fake story. Tell them you have a friend w/ a wife. Then (while laughing as if this is humorous), tell them she has a reape/forced fantasy where she pretends she is unwilling during intercourse. So your friend, thinking it would help, takes a day off work and while wearing a ski mask pretends to break in and punch her hard in the face. He then has his way with her revealing himself at the end. Act like this is funny and you cannot understand why she may be upset realizing her "fantasy" I guarentee you they will empathize, at which point you interate that doemstic violence is no joke. Hopefully they see the connection to their shamrful behavior
