"this doesn’t look like a crisis from the HR department at Google or the admissions office at Princeton. But the view from the rarefied circles where policy is made is rather different to the view from the street where life is lived. "

brilliant, good article

[–]accidental_me 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The article didn't mention perhaps the biggest problem of them all, though: Women are less productive and so are unmarried men compared the traditional economic backbone, fathers. And less fathers, and fathers living with their own kids, we will have and already do. It's a big trend almost nobody talks about.

Then again, perhaps unmarried and divorced men will find other and more fulfilling lifestyles. If so, the trend that now looks very worrying will turn out a blessing.

[–]Frosty-Gate-8094 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its a blessing in disguise..
Less men marrying, means less men fulfilling traditional male-gender roles..

The full-scale effect of this will take a few generations to show up. But when it does, there will be no going back..
Future of humanity will depend on how the society responds...

With the climate change and robot revolution gearing-up, the future doesn't seem very bright for our species..

[–]fear_the_future 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Of course a husband with housewife is more productive (if you only look at industrial production) than an unmarried man since he doesn't have to do any house work. But surely an unmarried persons both working fulltime are more productive than a husband and housewife.

[–]Frosty-Gate-8094 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's not they are worried about.

Married couple are overall more productive than two single people.

That's because they are also caring for two kids (on an average).... So, they are contribting the cost of four people, not two.
Single people are usually childless.

But even bigger factor in marriage is that, that two kids are future adults.. And hence future taxpayers..

Even if two unmarried people earn same as married people, they aren't contributing towards the 'future' of the society...

That is why society promotes marriages so unilaterally..
Without marriage, birth rates will fall.
And a society that doesn't have children doesn't have any future.

[–]accidental_me 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's about incentives, not who has how much time.

[–]fishmonger7 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m not surprised by that at all. Unmarried men will undoubtedly have lower motivation. What’s the point of beating yourself at work only to come to a empty home?

Also Gender quotas these days.....

[–]ABBucsfan 54 points55 points56 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yup engineering still has way more men then women. We only had a couple girls in our whole program. Yet whenever I looked around the office or we hired people out of school it was never anywhere remotely proportionate.

[–]mistralol 43 points44 points45 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I work as a SW dev. Its 80/20 graduation rate of men/women. However when you look into the roles as well. When you head off down the more difficult extrem end of the technical side that drops off basically to nearly zero or 95/5 the unqualified disapprear real fast form the coal face cause they don't like it.

Also the women who do work in tech tend to end up more as people driven people eg managers, organizers, support and stuff that involves people more than tech more. Then of course complain about not being paid as much. But thats not where the value is the value is the skill and managers are a dime a dozen in comparission to proper raw talent.

Like heres an interesting comparission for github code submission that show there is basically no bias < 2% for acceptance or the bias is the wrong way lol.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/02/data-analysis-of-github-contributions-reveals-unexpected-gender-bias/

But also notice how the graphics are arrange compared to the data when they come to percentage as women. The actual rate of work done is 95/5 respectivly 8k submissions vs 150k

Same deal at the extreme end of the spectrum where women in the entire tech sector actually end up in the region of 30% - 40% of the workforce (this obviously includes HR, Accounts and all sorts of areas)

https://blog.bitergia.com/2016/10/11/gender-diversity-analysis-of-the-linux-kernel-technical-contributions/

At the code side... women make up a population of 9.9% and contibution of 6.8% and its not because women are worse on average its because you have a number of men at the other extreme end of the spectrum doing about 2-3x the amount of a normal person causing that offset.

But oh look only 5% of women are CEO's.... well yes... thats actually an accurate reflection on the code contribution which is how most tech's got started....

Have argued this a few time in the real world with feminsts when it comes to engineering. Show me the women in the world who wanted to learn how to fix their own car? Program their own computer? Take things apart? Build things? as a kid and then look at the proportion of men who did the same.

They have absolutly no answers to that.....

[–]Kinexity 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You tell the complaining feminists that if they wanted ratios to change they should have studied STEM.

[–]mistralol 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Note: They its both a reference to women and men(mostly) in this.

Nope. Not just study it. They actually have to like it and be interested and want to chase it because of those reasons.

Take somebody like myself as an example. I am a bit more of an extreme case than most. Who has met dozens of other people like myself in my career. I learn how to program computers when I was about 8-10 years old. I could write in C/C++, Perl in the early 90's when I was 14.

I started working commercially at age 16. Summer job refereed by a collage tutor to a friend of his who had marked a programming assignment. Did all sorts of work pulled cable, setup phone system, fixed peoples computers, I think i basically fixed all the computers people had in 2 local golf clubs and 2 yacht clubs..... got some of their members to put a card up on their notice boards... word gets around as well. More work than I knew what to do with. Even throwing work over to other friends and stuff already taking some comission lol so certinally getting business expirence at the same time.

So all immeidate geek friends who were near me. We all lifted each other up massivly very early on in life as teenagers. Stayed out of trouble mostly which was difficult cause we had money to get in "real trouble" at that age..... fun times :)

By the time they decided to study STEM at age 18...... They were already years behind...... and without cash flow. Its not like they didn't want to or could not compete. They didn't even speak the same technical language / slang by that stage as the people they were meant to be competing against.

So by the time people came out of uni at age 22-23 or so with all the gap years they take and stuff. There are actually about 6-7 years behind in industry expirence (practical is more but undocumented for interviews - it often shows in tech tests results). So by the time they hit 30 they are actually at half the expirence. So always playing catch up... many of the man as well as the women.

One does not simply equalize that.....

These stories in that particular industry are not uncommon eg https://www.reddit.com/r/computertechs/comments/hkmi7d/young_teen_looking_to_learn_more_about_computer/

Now in my 40's... All I will say is that guy asking for advice and already been out building / fixing other peoples computers is setup for life the rest of his "major compedition" is 10 years behind for the rest of life.

[–]Activision19 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m an engineer and I’ve noticed at the couple firms I’ve worked at, they will keep an underperforming woman around WAY longer than they will a similarly underperforming man.

[–]PeteyMax 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, I think affirmative action is the more likely explanation.

[–]mistralol 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Funny story actually. Saw this in a SW job. Small team 4 people. 3 of us quit within 2 weeks (actually within 2 days of each other after located new jobs) of being forced to accept somebody under affirmative action.

The kicker here being in the UK. You actually have to ask questions give tests and score people in the interviews and the person the job was offered too was a) below the minimum acceptable bar b) was not the next on the list (actually about average half way down).

This also wasn't discussed prior to quitting amoung people. It came out later.... We also leaked the information to the candidates after scrubbing names. So they could do with the information whatever they wanted.

[–]bottleblank 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Interviews and things are easier on women. Like college and job interviews. A lot of places want attractive women working there because it helps business.

As an autistic male, I find this an interesting point.

The reason I find it interesting is that when autism in women is discussed, it's often said that women are more at risk of not being diagnosed because they "mask" more often, and more successfully, than men. This is considered to be a bad thing, and not without reason, because not being diagnosed might result in not getting help or consideration for what many countries consider to be a disability. It may cause excessive stress, it may cause internal conflict over the true personality of the autistic person.

But it seems to me that if autistic women (or at least many of them, to the extent that this is considered to be a common issue) are so capable of masking, so capable of blending in with society, then they would logically be more capable of succeeding in job interviews than an equally autistic man.

I don't mean to suggest that they don't have issues with their autism, it's still autism, regardless of whether you're male or female, and it does cause difficulties, it can bring with it comorbidities, but I think it's probably worth mentioning in terms of how autism might affect men more than women when it comes to getting jobs (which, naturally, has a huge impact on the quality of the rest of their lives).

[–]Dark_Knight2000 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A very interesting comment. I often wondered this myself and I even have an interesting parallel for it.

Society says that men are more socialized to be more authoritative and to not be shy. Consequently even shy men have less of an issue being heard in board rooms or being taken seriously. It’s not that they like talking, but that if they don’t there’s no other choice, it will not be forgiven. Many men hate being dominant or asking for raises but they’re better at masking that fear and insecurity.

People who mask are generally not given much in the way of sympathy. Since they can blend in with a society that like neurotypical extroverts, the problems they face are more internal and interpersonal rather than success based. Still, that doesn’t mean they don’t suffer and aren’t uncomfortable when they have to go against their nature

[–]bottleblank 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure, as I say, I don't mean to say that autistic women don't suffer those issues, but I think there is something to be said for being better able to "fake it 'til you make it", which successful (even temporary) masking makes it easier to do. If you're unable to do that, it's much more difficult to initiate things, especially important events like applying/interviewing for jobs, or dating, which can help improve other aspects of your life (such as self-confidence, financial stability, and social or career opportunities).

I find that I can, if pressed, "front it out" when I have to do certain things, like attend an appointment or interview, but only if that appointment or interview wasn't my entire decision or responsibility to arrange. For example, some months ago I had two online interviews for jobs, which I did attend. Those were arranged under duress and extreme external social motivation, respectively. It required days worth of mental energy both before and after each interview, and failing to get either job was absolutely devastating, but I did show up, and I did try. I simply cannot sustain that kind of effort.

But I suspect that if I were better at masking in critical situations like that, or be shown more empathy or desire (as an attractive autistic woman might be), that would help ease some of the difficulty.

Again I emphasise that I don't think autistic women get an easy ride, it's still autism, but society (on the whole) tends to afford women certain routes to achievement and acceptance that I don't think men, especially autistic men, often benefit from. I think that's particularly true, as you mention, in terms of internal and interpersonal issues, where we as men are expected to just quietly "man up" and figure it out, without support from our peers, moreso than women are. It's easy to end up feeling like a failure, or "lazy", when you don't get that support, you don't get that benefit of the doubt, and are looked down upon by society for having gone nowhere and achieved nothing in your life.

[–]mindfulotuss93 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree with some of this. I think men are more quickly labeled "weird" while females are seen as "quirky" or "interesting". Especially if a female is seen as attractive. I definitely am not neurotypical. I have pretty severe OCD and my closest friends can see some of the behavior I exhibit that most would find weird. I, however, excel in interviews and have never had a problem getting a job. Especially if a male is interviewing.

[–]mindfulotuss93 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'll be the first to admit, I enjoy certain aspects of being female. I wouldnt want to be a man

[–]caseybvdc74 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m in the same boat. I tried getting a job with the county I lived but they seriously only hire 5 percent male for the jobs I was testing/interviewing for. You can look it up for government jobs since salaries are public.

[–]GodBirb 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. My brother is studying engineering at Oxford (joint top uni in the U.K.) and he‘s always talking about the blatant diversity hiring. In his class of 8, top 3 are men, bottom 3 are women. Considering there are around 2000 applicants across the subject per year, there shouldn’t be nearly as much skill variation as there is in his and others classes.

[–]woolencadaver -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Three things an interviewer asks themselves. Can they do the job. Will they do the job. Will they fit in with the culture.

Someone who is interviewing for a position and they're answerable for that hire won't hire someone who doesn't fit that criteria. They'll hire the best fit that also suits them. They won't necessarily hire the most qualified. Bubbly college girls tend to be more agreeable and they're cheaper. It's a business decision.

I'm not saying this shit is right but it's the truth.

[–]TheRealDrRat 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I noticed the same thing when I graduated college.

[–]Some-weirdo828 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As a girl, this frustrates me. People should be hired based on their qualifications. We are more than our looks. And men should have the same opportunities as women.

If a man ranting on Reddit is a pathetic little incel, I wonder how pathetic and incellish you consider all the women taking advantage of quotas for women from Universities to Commision in the European Union (and the women who fight to create those quotas) lol.

[+]mindfulotuss93 -33 points-32 points-31 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Lol maybe some women are just smarter, more social and more accomplished than you! Is it really that hard to believe? I guess with your limited perspective it may be hard to have that level of awareness.

[–]SamaelET 28 points29 points30 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

LOL. Not even adressing the point or maybe you don't know what a quotas is. Here is an example :

https://www.reddit.com/r/MensRights/comments/s2xl1w/eu_legal_requirement_for_women_in_boardrooms_a/

It is giving opportunities to women simply for being women. Real privileges and not the imaginary "Patriarchy".

[+]mindfulotuss93 -23 points-22 points-21 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I understand what a fucking quota is. There is little evidence showing this is wide spread practice. Honestly not worth arguing with you. Do you know what counts as a worthy source of information, by the way? It certainly isn't a reddit thread lollll. Next time, send me factual information/statistics backed by peer reviewed sources or don't bother.

[–]GodBirb 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Well you can’t get those kinds of stats since no institution is going to admit they let more women in just to look good. There does seem, however, to be large amounts of anecdotal evidence here, and whilst that’s not the be all and end all, it could be taken into account.

My brother for example is studying engineering at Oxford (joint top uni in the UK) and he’s always talking about the blatant diversity hiring of women in his classes. I.e. with 2000 applicants, there shouldn’t be as much variation as there is between the top 3 (all men) and the bottom 3 (all women) (in a class of ~8).

[–]mindfulotuss93 -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That could be efforts of STEM programs encouraging women to pursue what used to be male dominated fields, too.

[–]GodBirb 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Im all for encouraging girls and women to get into male-dominated stem fields, I just dislike the idea of diversity hiring to do so. They should be encouraged to get themselves up to a high level enough to get into jobs and universities, but they shouldn’t be encouraged to work less hard to get those same spots just because they are women.

I ‚spoke’ with some other woman about this, and she said that there is a lot of ‚background discouragement‘ for women in stem fields while they grow up. But honestly I disagree. In this day and age of first world education I fail to see where the girls were being actively or passively discouraged from going into maths and physics and whatnot. It’s just not something that anyone would put any effort into doing. Even if they were a massive misogynist, why would they go round telling girls engineering wasn’t for them? It just doesn’t seem like it would ever happen nowadays, and yet universities and workplaces still seem to be going down the route of hiring disproportionate numbers of women to supposedly make up for all of their previous discouragement.

[–]mindfulotuss93 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think a lot of the rhetoric surrounding girls being advised against STEM careers is centered around unconscious bias and how these unconscious biases of teachers and parents dissuade women from realizing potential? There are some studies on bias from teachers and how it impacts students' perceived abilities extending even to how successful students are when testing. Not sure how much of it I believe, to be honest. I have a 6 year old and so far, her teachers have encouraged her because she has a strong aptitude for math. I do think it was more relevant in the past. I also think there was a lack of female or minority representation in some of these fields (for whatever reason). When a child doesn't see someone like them in a given field, they may be less inclined to show intetest or pursue that. Again, I am not arguing that there is any ill intent in the lack of representation.

I think parenting has a lot to do with it. My parents never discouraged any interest I had so I never believed there were "off limit" career choices (within reason lmao). I also think there is some biological differences between the male and female brain. Many women seek out helping careers, or careers where they can nurture. Sure, some of that can be socialization/society but I believe it is just more of an inherent inclination among females to seek out these helping professions. I dont think there is anything wrong with that, either.

Um, responding to the person whining to have me banned 😏 i am not a moderator in any group so cannot speak for supposed censorship and banning. I always encourage open dialogue and debate about ideas. If i ran a sub, I'd too welcome challenging ideas and opinions.

[–]mindfulotuss93 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Oh, okay 🙃 again, i most likely outearn you and have accomplished more on paper. If you read my other comments I attested that I was misinformed about the origins of this sub. I thought it was replacement for r/incels. I've actually had somewhat productive conversations on this thread. I am an open book, so I assure you, your insults are relatively meaningless. Deviance is such an interesting idea. Did I engage in deviant behavior surrounding addiction? Not a street drug user, didn't break laws or become estranged from society. Ironically, I did "socially acceptable" drugs due to my upbringing in a well off family and having to maintain a certain level of success. Is addiction deviant in of itself? I'd argue not. Alcohol, which is socially acceptable, accounts for many immorral actions but it's only stigmatized when someone admits to having a problem or engaging in "stereotypical" alcoholic behavior or embodying certain traits. As for sexual deviance, I suppose my interests aren't the status quo, but not so abnormal in actuality. 🙂

Doesn't help that we are entering an era where all the old blue collars are retiring and younger folks, mostly guys are filling their spots realizing that you can make a lot of money without the need of a college degree.

[–]Excellent_Emotion204 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know way more men who didn't get to go to college on daddies dime vs women. Hell half the guys in my platoon were just there because their parents or them couldn't afford to send them to college. I don't have a single female friend or ex girlfriend who's daddy didn't pay for their schooling. My buddies dad paid for his sister to go to college but not him. He had to "earn it". Still my best friend to this day and we definitely earned it. All of us did.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out if I live long enough to see it.

The old model where the husband was the breadwinner and leader while the wife kept the home and raised kids is slowly being swapped. Women have already taking over leading in more marriages than not. Next, they'll be the breadwinners. The dads that don't make enough for it to make sense to work and pay childcare will end up being stay at home dads and keeping the home.

It won't be pretty. Women are wired to not respect or love men like that.

When the wife makes more money than the husband, the likelihood of divorce roughly doubles. Who intiates the majority of divorces, again?

[–]SandmanOrpheus 41 points42 points43 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I had a first wife who I ended up divorcing because she made more money than me as an accountant than I did as a scientist. She would ridicule me that she made more and that I was not a good enough man because of this. She shut me off from any affection and eventually had me move out of the master bedroom and build an apartment for myself in our house in the cellar. After surviving a bout with cancer, that she offered next to no help with, I told her I was divorcing her and I did it. I ended up meeting a beautiful younger woman who didn't care how much I made and married her, and my ex found a much older, richer man than me that she married and doesn't even have to live with, she visits him 3 days a week. It's all about the $$ for most of them, regardless what they say. If you're lucky you can still find a good moral, ethical woman like I did, but in my experience, they are exceptionally hard to find nowadays.

Looks will become a bigger factor for women when marrying a man.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

We're seeing this in the swipe data. Instead of matching with the top 20% of men for looking good, they're going for the top 10%. Trouble is, there simply are many more attractive women trying for those guys than there are guys that meet their ever-increasing criteria. It seems like a lot decide to marry whoever they can when they get the baby rabies and then take out their resentment on their husband.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Sort harems absolutely exist. Most women would rather share a very attractive/rich guy than be exclusive with a guy who isn’t those things.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

If polygamy truly takes off, the West is finished. All those leftover males with no hope of starting a family or having a partner will ultimately starve the economy and leave us wide open for a foreign takeover.

Women have already taking over leading in more marriages than not.

Leading?

Next, they'll be the breadwinners.

No, hypergamy is a thing, women don't generally marry down. If they later become the breadwinner, a divorce is on the horizon and divorce does not favor the husband.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Leading?

It's pretty clear (to me at least) that women run the show in more marriages than not. "We're equal partners" is just code for the man giving in to whatever emotional manipulation she employs to get her way.

Yeah, everything I know indicates that more and more women will simply never marry due to their refusal/inability to marry down.

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's pretty clear (to me at least) that women run the show in more marriages than not. "We're equal partners" is just code for the man giving in to whatever emotional manipulation she employs to get her way.

To the extent that's true, it's not a change.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Women have always had most of the soft power (influence, persuasion, ability to change the others mind, etc.) in relationships. It seems like men are innately wired to desire to care for his wife and do things that might make make her happy.

The part that's changed is that men used to have overt power (authority) in a relationship. He was in charge, he had final say on tough decisions. What he said goes and was respected. Feminism changed that and insisted the overt power in a relationship be shared.

In a healthy relationship using the old model, the soft power and overt power balanced out. But now women have ~50% of the overt power while retaining a majority of the soft power.

[–]tenchineuro 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Feminism changed that and insisted the overt power in a relationship be shared.

Shared? What power (covert or overt) does a married man have today?

In a healthy relationship using the old model, the soft power and overt power balanced out.

No, not really. You should read some of Karen Straughan's posts about the way things used to be. Hell, a husband would be punished for his wife's crimes.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Haha yeah they say it's shared, but it almost always isn't.

That doesn't sound like the healthy version of the situation.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 35 points36 points37 points 4 years ago* (13 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I'm not saying it can't ever work. Glad it worked for them. Stats say it's the exception though and not the rule. For example, divorce rates are something like 30% higher when the wife earns more than the husband. Reported marriage satisfaction is lower too.

The other possibility is marriage rates simply continue to decline. There was a big research study that predicts over 50% of women will be single and if I remember right, never married. I forget the timeframe though.

[–]mindfulotuss93 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[+]Ok_Razzmatazz_1751 -17 points-16 points-15 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Why do people act like women being educated and bread winners just started happening ?

It's been ongoing for many families for decades now .

Definitely not a new dynamic .

Only new to those that have kept their head in the sand.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I did mention it's been happening slowly (i.e. several decades) and if I live long enough (I'm 43). Dual income homes are the norm now. If you look at a scatter plot of a husband's income on the X axis and the wife's income on the Y-axis, and then draw a line through were income is equal (y=x), then there are very few points significantly above that line. It's very disporportainate to the many points far below the line (man earns much more).

It seems like it's women who are reluctant to marry a man she significantly outearns, but I'm not aware of any data on that question.

With more women in college now, and college grads typically earning more, it seems that women will be out-earning men.

So the question is what will happen? Will the norm in marriages of the man earning more finally yield? Will the # of marriages simply continue to decrease?

[–]mindfulotuss93 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Personally, I prefer to outearn or at least earn as much as my partner. I never want to feel dependent on his income or indebted for having to do so.

Traditionalists: Empower men to protect and provision women.

[–]THE445GUY 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In 2008, a counselor at the University of Vermont, worried about the mental health toll on men, proposed creating a men’s center at the school. The effort was shot down as feminists complained about investing resources in a “privileged” class of student. Today, 60 percent of the students on that campus are women. There are more than 500 women’s centers on American college campuses.

And they say feminism doesn’t work against men.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago* (44 children) | Copy Link

the problem is far, far worse than this article explains.

40% of college graduated women leave the work force in less than 6 years after graduation. Not "doesn't work in their degree field", but stops working completely. 40% of female doctors leave practice in less time than it took to get the degree.

THAT's the problem. women are filling the majority of university seats and earning degrees in fields they have no intention of working in.

We're facing a massive shortage of qualified professionals, and it's women's fault because they wanted to earn like men, but don't want to work like men.

[–]Taylor862 -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (43 children) | Copy Link

That’s actually incorrect. 40% either move out of their profession or go part time. A lot of this has to do with their male partner not splitting the child labor equally however as there’s still a stigma that women are expected to do the majority of the household and child raising labor. It’s 2022, there should be equal labor distribution in the household between spouses.

[–]valspare 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

It’s 2022, there should be equal labor distribution in the household between spouses.

Ok then, how do you suggest we split up the following traditional man's role in the household to assist with child rearing and housework (laundry, cooking, cleaning)?

Lawn care. Hedge trimming. Tree cutting/trimming. Vehicle Maintenance. Garbage. Cleaning up dog crap. Cleaning out the litter box. Household protection (against intruders). Family protection (against violence). Driving/errands. Cleaning gutters. Shoveling snow. Driving in snow. Installing snow chains. Doing the heavy lifting in the house. Furniture assembly. Installation/repair coordination. Installing the outside Christmas lights using a ladder., etc.

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

It’s not my place to tell how couples should split up housework and who should be in charge of what It’s completely dependent on what the couple wants and is comfortable with. All I’m saying is that we should be more equal when it comes to child care and chores. Maybe the wife doesn’t mind doing lawn care while the husband can do laundry. I don’t care. Gender norms this day in age especially when it comes to house and child care is outdated. It’s an equal partnership and most of what you stated can be completed by a woman. Also on the part of protecting against intruders. Male partners are more likely to kill their partner than successfully protect them from intrusion. Just so you know. 3 women die by the hands of her intimate partner every day in America.

[–]valspare 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

3 women die by the hands of her intimate partner every day in America.

I doubt this. But you're more then welcome to prove me wrong.

Additionally, why did you take it to this extreme about division of household chores?

And since you mention it, more men are murdered in the US then women. But I guess that doesn't matter as it doesn't fit the anti-men narrative being pushed.

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

https://now.org/resource/violence-against-women-in-the-united-states-statistic/ hopefully this will enlighten you and no I’m not anti men for stating a fact. Also that is true that more men than women are murdered however you probably only stated this to downplay my statement about intimate partner murders so it seems you are more anti women than I am anti men. Who kills these men though I wonder? Is it women? I don’t think so. Also how am I taking things to the extreme by saying the chores and childcare should be divided up with what the couple is comfortable with? That seems less than extreme compared to your traditional gender norm chores that both men and women are capable of completing.

[–]valspare 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Thank you. And yet I still don't care about women's issues.

Also how am I taking things to the extreme by saying the chores and childcare should be divided up with what the couple is comfortable with?

I interpreted your statement as fair enough how a couple decide their division of household chores. Where you took it to the extreme, was adding the intimate partner violence, where none was brought up.

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You mentioned that protecting from intrusion was a mans job and I mentioned that it’s more likely that men are violent to their wives/girlfriends than protective from threats. I don’t think that is an extreme to say. When you say you don’t care about women’s issues I hope that is sarcasm considering the men’s and women’s rights movements strive for equality not opposite gender hating but maybe I misunderstood your statement. I hope I did.

[–]valspare 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

maybe I misunderstood your statement.

You did.

You took my statement about division of household chores that were traditionally split by gender roles, and turned it into a women's rights issue about domestic violence/intimate partner violence.

I've been observing feminism/men's rights issues for years. From many different English speaking countries news and issues. Predominate observations are from the US. Feminists claim they advocate for equal rights, yet only when it means men have to give up something to women so that women could be equal/equally represented. Never do they advocate for women giving up privilege's to be equal to men.

When I see that feminists actually advocate for real equality, by giving up some of their female privilege's so they can be equal to or equally represented like men, then I'll rethink my stance on not caring about women's issues.

Don't hold your breath though. I doubt that day will come.

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Women advocate for decreasing male violence something that affects women AND men however you clearly stated that you didn’t care about those statistics. Also the statement you took abo me misunderstanding you was about the part where you said you don’t care about female partner murders so clearly I did understand you. There is no confusion on my end. Also you can disagree with the feminist movement but still care about women’s rights you know? Clearly do don’t care about women at all if the idea of them being murdered by someone who is supposed to protect them makes you reply with “yet I still don’t care” you’re not a men’s rights activist youre just hate women

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

In my minds I did answer the question. As to why they do more it’s because they are forced to do more because their male counterparts do not do an even amount of work so women are expected to make up for their partners lack of action. That is pretty self explanatory. What specifically are you confused about?

there should be equal labor distribution in the household

Personally, I think the fairest way is when both spouses have about the same amount of free time. If there's 10 hours/week of household chores, person A works 40 hours/week, and person B works 50/week, then A should do just about all of them.

college now a days is prison with benefits upon release but also debt. that is why men often dont want to play the college game. the internet teaches better than some boring 50 year old female lecturing for an hour about nonsense.

the only learning you get at many colleges is in the books anyways, half or more of the "Professors" suck at their job. would be awesome if that werent true but hey thats life. the system is designed to require pieces of paper approved by groups of people with similar pieces of paper authorizing you as an educated person, so you can work for corporations and their owners that dont have similar pieces of paper.

Is it because all their degrees are in gender studies or underwater basket weaving, thus leaving no one in the scientific fields to engineer and build new things, thus leading to mass importation of 3rd world engineers?

Imagine going into debt to go to an echo chamber

Underwater Basket Weaving! 😂 That's hilarious‼️ 🤣

[–]haruame 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We don't need 3rd world engineers. It's all about $ for colleges and saving $ for corporations. Foreign student pay double for tuition for their dumbed downed 'master' degrees worthless to anyone with a US bachelors.

I don't even need to read the article to answer this question. Increase in uneducated men? Increase in crime.

[–]drgonzo17 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You get what you pay for. If you don't want an education college is the easiest place to do it. It really happens before college; most men fail to appreciate how quickly everything can change in an instant by a poor decision in youth.

[–]mernie925 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Half of the degrees they get is bullshit time and money wasters like a degree in gender studies, English or art history.

If you're putting in the time, money and effort to go to university at least do it for a proper degree that will get you somewhere, like a Law or STEM degree.

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are more women in law school than men so your point doesn’t really fully stand

[–]trgrngr 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The future of men is to take while women work. Be a leach. Go for the best stuff. Act entitled. Don’t volunteer, steer clear of public service. Instead your job today is to consume. As much and as often as possible. Give nothing back.

[–]benjamimo1 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

My long term view is more women becoming lesbians due to lack of males with high income jobs or college degrees. You heard it here first.

[–]sunyahuman 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No, women will start sharing attractive high-income men with other women. Harems will return.

I think polygamy is illegal most places, except possibly Utah.

If they don't marry that legality is not a problem, but if they live together common law marriage would make that formality irrelevant eventually.

I mean no one knows the future, but it seems possible to me that the feminist movement of the 2050s will decry the patriarchal structure of marriage in forcing women to go after mediocre, paycheck-to-paycheck dick, since women should be able to decide their own destinies they should be able to share men if they want.

Honestly doesnt sound too farfetched to me, at least

Feminism has been opposed to the institution of marriage for at least 50 years.

[–]sunyahuman 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, i just meant in a different way. Probably should have written “monogamy” instead of “marriage”.

[–]tenchineuro 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah, OK, it makes sense that way.

I actually heard this idea mentioned on NPR a few months ago.

The thing is, while women may find this arrangement beneficial, I don't see any upside here for the man.

[–]GodBirb 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don’t think ‚becoming lesbian‘ is a choice per se, but I do get your point. A couple other people here have mentioned the stats of divorce rates where the women earn more than the men and they are exactly what you’re getting at.

[–]tenchineuro 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t think ‚becoming lesbian‘ is a choice per se, but I do get your point.

Have you heard of the term lesbian till graduation?

[–]tenchineuro 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think that's already happening to some degree.

There will be some interesting side effects though. I read of a lesbian divorce in the UK a few years ago and the woman with the higher paying job was made to pay a substantial amount in alimony and she was extremely unhappy about that. The judge said that since she had taken on the male role, she had assumed the responsibility of a man and ruled accordingly.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Meh, the middle class jobs are starting to disappear. By the time today's graduates are forty most of them will be as useless as the non-graduates. Meanwhile men, NOT having had their intellects destroyed by college, will have an easier time manipulating women into making them sandwiches.

I like how you pretend like society is so unbalanced towards men while you're making chauvinistic comments. Your username suits you. And, seriously, college destroys intellect? That's absolutely hilarious.

[–]mikesteane 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, college destroys intellect in any number of ways.

Firstly, college graduates generally have such a large ego investment in their qualifications and the associated beliefs that they are incapable of considering any other possibilities. This is particularly true in the liberal arts.

Secondly, there is now a strong element of indoctrination at many colleges with required viewpoints on many issues so that free thought is suppressed.

Thirdly, the cancellation of anyone who does not toe the line wrt to the woke agenda that pervades colleges means that there is restricted access to alternative ideas, the opposite of what should be going on in higher education.

Many graduates, even from high ranking universities, are woefully ill-educated even in their own specialist fields.

I did repeat my answer about men doing less work in the house and the study I referenced showed that even women who were breadwinners did more house and child work. In my first comment I mentioned that men did less. As to being “forced” yes they are in that the husband does not do the labor so the woman has no other option than to do it for him. Essentially that is giving her no other option meaning forced. If no one takes care of the children of no one cleans the house well then the home and children are going to suffer so yes it is forced. This is also true for women who work more than the man and outearn the man. I understand if the man works and the woman stays at home but that is a lifestyle that is outdated and frankly not an alternative to many couples in this economy.

[–]haruame 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Seems like women are hardwired to be more interested in that type of work and are more suited for it..

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

How are they hardwired for dishwashing and laundry lololol what do they scrub the dishes with their vaginas or something hahah get out of the 50s bro and you might actually find a healthy relationship to be in. The unequal house and kid work distribution is one of the main reasons women divorced their partners so how can they be more suited for it? That literally doesn’t make any sense that’s just a sexist claim from a man who doesn’t want to fold his own socks

[–]haruame 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Well, here's the thing, men and women are different. Let's put it this way, maybe men don't like housework because they are more interested in using their brain to do thing that built the society women live in. So sally can get a degree and work a job in a company and society literally built by men from nothing while also doing housework, so what?

Men are more suited to manipulating the environment while women are more suited for nurturing, that's biology.

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Hahaha you think women enjoy housework more than men? Also women would have played a much larger role in the building of society if men didn’t take away their rights. Women couldn’t even open their own bank account or get a credit card without the permission of a man up until 1974. Now that women took their rights back there are more medical students and law students who are female than male. No one likes housework dude that’s why it should be split evenly. Also you clearly dodged the part where I called you out for literally not giving a shit about women being murdered by their partners so who is the more extreme one here? You seem to be the woman hater more than I seem to be the man hater here

[–]haruame 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm just saying how things are, I don't care about finding a "solution" to housework or whatever bullshit women think is stacked against them. Isn't it women who wanted to be equal in the workforce?? They can figure it out themselves. It doesn't matter how much more equality women get in society they don't create in the same way men do. Look up the gender equality paradox.

Yeah, there are more women college students than men. So what? College is an expensive gamble nowadays, and yeah let's shit on men for not being as good as women anymore, so much for equality lol. I'm not obsessed with portraying society as a competition between men and women like feminists are anyway. Didn't people work together as families and couples throughout history?

I think you were talking to someone else about someone getting murdered..

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You’re commenting on my comment about equal distribution of household labor and child labor. You’re not mentioning child labor either. How can you say you don’t care about equal labor when you are commenting and having a conversation about it? Also no one is shitting on men here if anything you’re shitting on women for saying they are hardwired for house work

[–]haruame 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Here's an idea, figure it out? Women are really good about bitching about their problems men need to solve for them, despite being equal now. Men need to do this, men need to that, I got a problem. Good, figure it out your self like you expect men to?

[–]Taylor862 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol one of the main concerns about the womens rights movement are male violence which men do need to change because it’s not the responsibility of women to change that for them. 3 women are killed by their intimate partner every day in just America. Male violence is. Huge problem for both women AND men.

[–]ThrowawayFionaAtskin 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

maybe men don't like housework because they are more interested in using their brain

hm but cooking and cleaning are essential skills ? My brother and I were both taught by my mom to cook and clean. Housework is 50/50.

[–]haruame 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Doesn't mean it's efficient to spend a bunch of your time on. There's this thing called division of labor.

[–]ThrowawayFionaAtskin 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

division of labour involves basic chores around the house, if both parties are working then both should do their chores. It is about basic manners and social responsibility to clean and cook for yourself.

[–]haruame 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, if you think it's a problem you figure it out. What if the men are making more money or doing work more vital to society? Men don't change because they "should" or you want them to anymore than women will change because men want them to.

[–]ThrowawayFionaAtskin 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Why does someone making more money absolve them of basic manners and responsibilities? When you have more money do you forget to wash and clean yourself or do your laundry? Why should someone else do your laundry? Let's say you are single do you still ask your mother to wash your clothes for you?

I also hold this idea for women, they should not depend on anyone and should help their husband. If he is working outside she should do work from home and when they come home both of them split the chores. Marriage is about sharing equal responsibilities not assigning predisposed responsibilities for one gender.

No one should change, that is not what I am saying, by the way there are stay at home dads (by choice) they still have wives who come back and do chores. Doing basic chores is not gendered if you are a grown 30 year old unable to do chores then I really don't know what to tell you. If you are marrying for the sole purpose of having a maid or a provider then that is not a marriage, it is a business arrangement. This goes out to both men and women not targeted specifically at either.

Golddiggers are as bad as people who marry to have their spouse as a maid. Neither should solely depend on each other for money or being a helper, that is so demeaning. I also dislike women who use men as cash cows. Neither of these scenarios are meaningful.v

[–]TheDailyExperiencer -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women are biologically more apt to perform significantly better then their male counterparts in any form of complex problem solving, computational, interpersonal etc. men are great at spacial and imaginative/ innovative thinking.
