I’m a redpilled male and i 100% agree with the way this woman handled it. They should have had a mature discussion about the inheritance with the husband understanding that it’s HER money and he can’t expect her to spend it any certain way just because he says so. But rather they should figure out what their goals are as a couple and create a plan for the future and determine how that inheritance should play a role.

They should have common goals that would lead to common financial decisions anyways. It would make sense for the husband to expect her to help with the mortgage, but he should also be paying the mortgage as well. It would make sense for him to expect her to pay for groceries but he should also be paying for groceries too. See how this works? Two people in a marriage, two people paying for the common interests. It should be a team effort

But this expectation on her to pay for the whole dinner? No. They should be agreeing to both pay a part of it if they’re hosting it, or if anything all adults could simply pay for their own food.

Actually, inheritances are not common assets. Think of it as a way of protecting your familys capital. Imagine if you inherited four houses than your parents built, a year later you divorce and your wife gets two of them, like WTF, she was not even family when they were constructed.

Those funds are relationship funds, marriage means that resources are shared, regardless of their source, and unless I'm very mistaken, if they were to divorce right then, half of that money would be going to him.

That being said, there's no indication that the wife is attempting to prevent that money for being used in ways that would benefit the husband, or trying to keep the money all to herself. In fact to me it looks like the husband is trying to be irresponsible with the money and the wife is trying to be as financially responsible as possible, and ensure it gets used for something worthwhile, rather than just wasted on dinners and other random expenses.

Note: This is a very highly rated post on AITA, and I am shocked. The degree of support for the wife and telling her to divorce him even over this is just shocking. The very idea inheritance isn't shared in the least bit in a marriage breaks the whole point of marriage itself. Men are better off with gold diggers. At least gold diggers need a man.

I still don’t understand married couples with separate finances. I think a truly unified couple would have had a conversation about this money and what to do with it long long before this point, and they would have considered it their money, not just her money.

But there’s a lot to unpack in “get back at them for not being able to help mom when she was sick” so clearly their marriage isn’t in the best shape.

I wasn’t there but it sounds extremely odd about this whole situation:

The lack of communication: Why didn’t the husband let her know what he and the family expected upfront when going out to dinner. It’s odd that they didn’t communicate anything and then he was butthurt and the family embarrassed when he didn’t. How poor are the extended family that they were “embarrassed” and angry at having to pay for themselves on a night out together with food and drinks, it surely wasn’t that expensive. Just poor people behaviour from the husband and his family, in my experience.
The money inherited - it may have come from her mother but it’s not really hers if she’s married. It’s both of their money. Just like if her husband inherited money from his family. If they divorce, half of that money goes to him.

So it’s odd that she put the inheritance money in a seperate account to HER to decide what she was going to do with it. Don’t you mean what WE are going to do with it?

Overall: Surely there was more conversation between her and her husband about plans for what they were going to do with the money that she omitted from this post to make herself seem like the victim/aggreived party, like many women do.

I think this is a great example of how women view money: her money her her money only whereas her husband’s money is THEIR money. Very typical behaviour

I think its the expectation that she would pay that's the issue. The feeling on their part that they are entitled to it. Also the fact that they or he should have never even told his parents that. Do they have kids? Maybe they want to put this away for their education, pay off debt, buy a house? How much is it? And if they divorced it would not be his money at all so long as she kept it separate in most states. I suspect this is not the first indication of issues in the marriage and his attitude. That being said I I just came into a lot of money I would want to in some way share that with my family and spouse but in the way I chose to do so. If someone buys me dinner I am always grateful but it is never expected.

in most states inheritance is legally seperated from marital property. Meaning the money is hers only and if one of his parents died the money would be his only. Neither spouse is legally entitled to the other's family money/estate.
