Uhm, my grandmother was born in 1914. She, like all other women in the village, busted her ass in the cloth factory, on the fields during harvest, DUG A FUCKING CELLAR WITH A SHOVEL, and restored the entire house after it had been ransacked in WWII and still got beaten and treated like a servant by my grand father despite having had a recommendation to attend higher ed but my great-grand folks couldn't even afford shoes for all their kids. Her mother had six small kids when her husband was crushed by a tree and she remarried a nasty widower who kept butter and bacon locked in his drawer because he liked his own spawn better.

Where in hell does this delusion that everything was rosy in ye olden days come from?

Gawd, my grandmother was Native American and white. She had to work constantly to support her family. Her own mother was a housewife who worked her ass off on a farm.

The majority of housewives worked constantly unless they were very specifically in a certain socioeconomic class. They couldn’t leave their husbands if they turned out to be evil either, at least not easily.

The women I know who are worn out by working, staying at home, or anything else often have shit partners, like the one lady said. Yeah, parenting is hard and so is working, but if you are married to a man child it is way worse. My husband and I work as a team, so yeah, sometimes we feel tired but it isn’t me doing everything while he comes home from work and plays video games.

The myth of the full time stay at home mom is such a 50s trope too. Women have always been mothering alongside field work, tailoring, etc., but modern mother’s are apparently supposed to also feel some sort of mom guilt over leaving their baby to go earn money

Small tirade here, but this topic really tickles my left tit,

my grandma (born late 1930s, so just in time to grow up during WW2 in europe) raised three kids (with the first being born when she was 19) while holding a part time job where she actually made more money than my grandpa, who worked a full time job (he was not happy about it). But did she get to put her money into her own bank account? No, because until 1958, women in my country were not allowed to have their own bank account and even after that, she needed her husband‘s/brother‘s/HER OWN EFFIN SON‘S permission and signature to get a credit card (imagine your own son having more authority over you than you yourself).

1958 was also the year a law was passed that a woman didn’t need her husband‘s permission to get a job. But until 1977, she could only get a job ”as long as it didn’t interfere with her duties in marriage and in motherhood“. So she was pretty much stuck in her part time job.

So yes, I am going back to university. Because I look back on my ancestors and see many smart women who would have killed to get a higher education (my grandma never got an education past elementary school due to the war, and has always told me how she would have loved to go to university).

I know the tweet above was probably written half jokingly by a stressed out college student, but I have been on the internet long enough to know that for an uncomfortably large amount of people, this is not a joke and they actually want the “”””””good old days”””””” back.

women of color, white ethnic women, immigrant women, and poor women always had to work. men have spread this rumor that “women doubled the workforce” in the 70s to blame on today’s gig economy hell, housing market, and jobs requiring more degrees and paying less, but that’s just not the case. women are allowed more mobility within their roles, and rich waspy women started working. that’s all. hypercapitalism is to blame on everything else.

My grandmother was 14 when she got married off to a 25 yo man. She had 8 boys, 8 BOYS, and spent the rest of her life cooking, cleaning, and sewing clothes. No education, no job, never travelled, never saw the world and what it had to offer, never chose what she wanted to be in life. She got stuck being a domestic slave to an old man. She didn’t get to pick her husband, she didn’t get to choose a career, she didn’t have the choice to LEARN ABOUT THE WORLD SHE LIVED IN. Her world was the kitchen and the house and her children. She was confined to a life of service. Idc who you are and what you say but that is indentured servitude. Getting married off to a stranger only to wait on him hand and foot. F_ck that, and f_ck this person for putting down the women who made it possible for us to escape that reality. To become educated, make our own money, own our own property, and choose our own life. I expect this kind of talk from men, but not women. I’m sad and embarrassed for her ignorance and laziness.

My grandma is the youngest of 8 and was born in rural Europe in 1922; once I was asking her about her other siblings, so she was listing them, and she noted "then it was ww1, so there were no children for those years." And then she said "it was very hard on the women, having children all the time." My grandma has very rarely said anything like that and would downplay it if I tried to talk to her about the concept of patriarchy and how God awful men can be lol. BUT that made me realize she is WELL aware of how she is probably the first generation of woman ever in her family history to have total freedom. She came to America by herself, she was small business owner, she had complete say in who she married, didn't get married until very late 20s, didn't have children until she was in her 30s, had access to birth control, and was able to chose to only have 2 kids.

I get that tweets like that are just jokes but wouldn't you take the full freedom we have these days over being dependent upon marriage to a man for literally everything? Even if that freedom can be a pain in the ass sometimes, isn't it better to be in the drivers seat of your own life?
