Pension age should be a value calculated as a percentage of life expectancy as expected work years, then add the years to reach majority age.

If women on average live to 80, then working 65% of their expected lifespan means working 52 years. This sets their age of retirement at 70. If you do the same for men with a life expectancy of 72, then men should be retiring at 65.

THAT would make it equal, so men and women get to both enjoy a similar percentage of their life in retirement.

Can they not see the hypocrisy of this statement? Women's groups bang on about equality and when forced to accept equality they complain that it's a travesty of justice. They had between 7-15yrs to plan for this levelling, hardly short notice. About time this sort of blatant discrimination against men was shut down.

Tbh mens retirement age should be offset by the difference in average life expectancy of a man vs woman. What I mean by that is if women on average are expected to live to 84 and men only 78 then we should be eligible to retire 6 years earlier. We work more hours. And have +90% of all workplace deaths and injuries.

Lower retirement ages for women, I think (but please correct me), more or less the standard half a century ago. The reason, I presume, was that working was less comfortable back then, and that we presumed women were more fragile. This was actually one of the first things many feminists wanted to scrap (at least in Sweden), for the simple - and correct - reason that this imposed a higher cost of employment for women on employers and hence served as a disincentive to hire them (at least at the same wage level as a male candidate).

So first of all, this should not only be a correct decision, but good news for gender equality, in this case equal opportunities for women.

Second, the only countries I know that still retain standards like this, at least for civil servants, are the likes of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan - in other words, highly traditionalist (read: patriarchal) parts of the world.

So to argue that retaining them is in any way in favour of gender equality, how ever warped the definition of the term, is truly mind-boggling.

(Again, all of these reflect my anecdotal impressions and amateurish assumptions, so please correct me if you know more.)

I am torn on this issue. My mum is in this group and is losing out.

Now I understand ,and do believe that men and women should have the same pension age however the way this was done by the UK government, and the age group it was done to does rather stink.

My mum found out at 53 that she wouldn't be getting her pension when she thought. By that time in her life she had made all her life and career choices already, she turned down promotions to different companies because she weighed up her choices at the time and decided a boring job she hates with a good pension was worth it for the stability of her family.

My mum (as I assume alot of other women) made these choices at the time because of the choices they were given just to have the rug (and her plans) pulled from under her far beyond the time anyone could reasonably expect someone to change career all of that.

I agree that men and women should be equal in everything, including pensions; however to introduce it to women who had already made some tough choices about balancing their family with their ambition is unfair.

It would have been better, in my opinion, to apply to to women who were 35ish at the time, they still have the option to pick up more easily and change career.

There is my 2 pence. I just wanted to say something as it's not quite as black and white as the headlines seem toake out.
