A lot of times, when I go on this sub, I see men complaining about how they’re supposedly not allowed to prefer low n count women, when it’s just their biology and evolution that has supposedly led to said preference. In my opinion, it’s just a way to not be held accountable to their preferences - so they’re hiding the personal element of their preferences behind a supposed male biological imperative that prevented them from desiring a high n count women. Often, if you read between the lines, they really want to say, women in general should behave the way they prefer, because otherwise they’ll have problems finding a partner (because all men think like that, because biology).

I want to reject that notion. I am not saying that there isn’t a majority of men who prefer low n count women - but I really want to emphasize that this is a personal preference and not a male quality in general. It’s not defining what a man is, and if I don’t prefer low n count women or if I don’t care about a womens n count, I am not less of a man than a person who does. Inversely, if a women prefers a man with a low n count, that doesn’t make her masculine or less of a woman. Caring about the n count of your partner is not a gendered preference, even though the prevalence among the genders might be vastly different. (But I have to admit, I have yet to see a study that proves that this preference occurs more often in male populations that in female ones.)

If we strip the n count preference from biological or evolutionary explanations, we could have a more productive discussion around it. Because then people can’t hide behind the fact that they just can’t help it for biological reasons - and they’d have to think about where this preference comes from and in what cases it might be really justified. Not that you have to justify all your preferences per se - but if you want other people to behave accordingly, you should give them a valid reason to do so. And I wouldn’t feel attacked as a man for not having these preferences, as I do now. Because if you say, something is an inherently male quality, you’re always saying that someone who doesn’t have said quality, is less of a man. And that’s where a lot of the backlash comes from when people are saying they prefer low n count partners, just because they’re a man.
