Presumably it’s a subset of masculinity. In this context, I was taught being a man is measured by Independence. Physically. Mentally and emotionally. Financially and practically. For example a strong man is physically independent. If they know how to handle themselves too, these types of men can go almost anywhere they please. Quite a luxury. A mentally and emotionally independent man, is impervious to criticism. Stoicism is a great example of this. Financially independent men are self evident. Practical men can be independent across a broad spectrum. One can be a great gardener. Hunt. Fish. Build. Weld. Write code. Fix phones. Cars. Write well. Well read. Fluent. Practical skills, that facilitate independence. In as many circumstances as life throws up.

Well most of the people that use terms like "toxic masculinity" are women. So start off with knowing what women want and you basically know what is considered "good" or "toxic" masculinity. Women are hypergamous. They want superior men, but for these superior men to treat them as equals. This right here should be everything you need to know.

To BE a competent superior man is what women like to brands as "Good natural behavior masculinity" and to ACT superior and USE your superior advantage is what women like to brand as "bad toxic masculinity".

All I really meant by “behavioral masculinity” was.. The behaviors that are stereotypically associated with masculine men. So basically it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s just “behaving in a masculine manner”.

As for as what behaviors are typically considered masculine in society. (If that’s what you’re asking). That’s kind of longer conversation that might unnecessary here. If you’ve made it to adulthood, you should have at least a pretty decent idea of what traditional masculinity looks like. Just think of the typical behaviors and mannerisms that are typical associated with us heterosexual men. So for example, something even as simple as, speaking in a masculine tone of voice. (A lot of women get the ick when a guy’s voice cracks or the guy has a weak, effeminate sounding voice.) Or as another example, not allowing a friend or coworker to blatantly disrespects you. These are good examples of behaviors women like. And doing the opposite of these things, gives a lot of women the ick.

Now apply this idea to other male characteristics as well such as posture or body-language. A lot of women will get the ick when a guy sits down or stands up in a feminine way. Or when the guy has a feminine walk. Imagine a grown ass heterosexual man swinging his hips or poking his ass out as he walks towards you bruh. It would look pretty ridiculous. (Unless the guy is a gay dude or something I guess. But then women will put you in a different category of “man”.) Basically, the bottom line is, if you are presenting yourself as a potential romantic partner for a woman, most women will expect you to carry yourself with at least some amount of traditional masculinity. That’s really all I was saying bro.

(And before anyone says it.. Yeah, of course there are exceptions to the rule. But we’re speaking about women in general here. Keep that in mind.)

TDLR : Basically, the bottom line is, if you are presenting yourself as a potential romantic partner for a woman, most women will expect you to carry yourself with at least some amount of traditional masculinity. That’s really all I was saying bro.

competence.
self control.
self reliance.
self awareness.
focus in objects, tasks or activities.
constructive cooperation.
logical/behavioral methology.
sacrifice.
resilience.
moderation.

It essentially boils down to this:

Those men who have their own power and independence and who are able to a greater extent than most men to behave accordingly, and act as they please without obeying following or deferring to others seem, act, and are above the rest, by definition. This is attractive to women.

This is true and likely always will be true, even if it's just as obviously in the interests of both society and individual women for men generally to be controlled and under control, and even if some men who have more freedom can use this freedom to hurt both society and individual women.

When there are rules, the obvious question is? Who makes the rules? Who follows the rules? Who breaks the rules? Many women would rather be with or at least seek out the rule-makers (or breakers) than the rule-followers, put simply. Even if that means ignoring the overwhelming majority. Because to obey a rule if you haven't made it yourself is to submit to another (traditionally, another man). And that's a turn-off.

A lot of guys read about or consider this idea, and then immediately dismiss it as silly and ridiculous. If they reject it, as misogynistic red pill shit. If they accept it, as evidence of how foolish, emotional, irresponsible and delusional women are. But the reality is that it isn't. There's no logical reason anyone can really suggest, I think, as to why a woman would be attracted to or really even accept weakness, low status, or submissiveness in men. The fact that it would be more convenient or easier will not change it, and even if you could write a whole book on why you think women should, it won't change how anyone feels.

Imagine you are an individual woman. What's actually good for you personally about being with a weak(er) man who does what he's told? There isn't really any. In the old days, there was the argument that it made him more likely to defer to the boss at work and keep his job which was obviously pretty important to you, but now women can make their own money so that's gone somewhat by the wayside as a motivation even if women still do think money is pretty cool (plus regular workers aren't actually doing that great anymore because of inflation anyway, so even the worker bee type guys usually can't afford to buy property or otherwise really get ahead, they're basically just like the girls financially these days).

To me it's a man not trying "to act like a man" and being comfortable with himself. In my life that's my boyfriend participating in childcare, cooking, chores, and not worrying about what a man or woman should be doing according to gender roles. It's talking about what's on his mind or bothering him without holding it all in until he explodes. It's being in a confrontation and not escalating or getting aggressive for no damn reason or trying to make someone fearful. It's not caring about what others think of your decisions and life in terms of what kind of man you appear to others. .

Self assured confidence is attractive.

Well. There's a controversial question lol. IMNSHO behavioral masculinity is what one would observe in a male devoid of societal input to ameliorate or alter said behavior. As opposed to feminine behavior it could be: heightened aggression, competitive, protective, sexual aggression, linear thought patterns... I'd need more time to think to go much further...

My understanding is it’s behaving in a traditionally masculine way, which is what most women find attractive in men.

It’s an issue because there’s so much pressure on young men not to be masculine, that masculinity is toxic, etc. in fact if you listed to male dating coaches, that’s their main message: act like a man.

For me, it’s my boyfriend being an equal partner to me in all ways — from household chores to paying bills to supporting my career as I support his. It is him being open emotionally (he’s working on it) without just using me as a therapist (he doesn’t).

It’s being confident in himself when it’s warranted and asking for help when he needs to.

It’s knowing how to have disagreements or arguments without resorting to anger or yelling etc.

It’s being comfortable in his own skin, for who he is, because he’s great.

The un-PC answer is that they're kinda the same. There may be "toxic" i.e. attributes perceived to be sometimes threatening or dangerous to women in how men instinctively behave that some women would rather they weren't attracted to but often are, but these are fundamental and currently ineradicable aspects of masculinity. It's sort of analogous to how a lot of guys get turned on by women being slutty and overtly sexual but feel guilty/stupid and chastise themselves for it.

It’s a subset of masculinity that describes masculine traits

Traditional masculinity and toxic masculinity are both behavioral displays of masculine traits…that’s where the “masculine” in both terms comes from

Toxic masculinity is when those traits are used to the detriment of others

So let’s take “physical strength” for example

Behavioral masculinity is merely the utilization of this physical strength
Traditional masculinity demonstrates physical strength as a virtue to be admired because it is used for the benefit of those who have less physical strength
It becomes toxic masculinity when that physical strength is used to harm others — particularly those who have less physical strength

What a lot of men disingenuously like to say is that any masculine behavior is toxic, while not admitting how those masculine behaviors harm people around them

Self-reliance that makes life better for people around him? Good! Traditional masculinity
Self-reliance to the point where he’s unable to ask for help (often mentally) and lashes out against someone trying to help him or becomes a paranoid off-the-grid “big gubmint gonna take much guns!” doomsday prepper? Toxic masculinity
Logical methodology that accomplishes goals that people around him agree on? Good! Traditional masculinity
Logical methodology that accomplishes goals that are simply what he wants through oppressive insistence that his way is always the best? Toxic masculinity

Plenty of men will use their masculinity as a rule with which to beat others and insist that there’s no problem and that anyone complaining about it is throwing “toxic masculinity” around too much…many men see no problem in punching down and then wonder why women don’t want to deal with an asshole

It is the manifestation of behaviours associated with masculine individuals or prompted by a masculine mindset - but without the manifestation of that.

Example- Traditional (some call toxic) masculinity is “I will fix the car because that’s a man’s job and women shouldn’t do it.”

Behavioural Masculinity is simply taking initiative in being the one to fix the car without tying it to the idea it’s “your job” or “something she can’t do”. It’s performative masculinity or instrumental masculinity.

I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a form of masculinity in “men’s interests” because it often involves the “doing things for others” part of masculinity expected of men but without the ideology behind it that ennobles the man or marks him as providing something a woman will not do. It robs him of recognition and once again reduces his usefulness to his utility and urges him to “think purely about that utility, and not so much what it means or why”.

Not necessarily what men need. In a rapid moving society with AI on the rise, manufacturing becoming increasingly mechanised and work hours and personal interests bleeding increasingly into the digital space (which can be artificially equalised) I don’t think men can continue with this mantra of “our value is in what we do. That’s our principle value” because society is generally moving away from that notion that it is in any way necessary or if any importance except out of financial utility or grants. So you have essentially reduce “positive masculinity” to financial value and willingness to do things for others. So basically a workhorse.

I’m sure the farmer likes that. Anyone wondered if the horse is getting a good deal?
