I'd ignore women complaining about "dead chivalry". If they want to experience some traditional gender roles, they can move into communities with more traditional outlook on dating and genders and enjoy their chivalry as much as they can. The rest of us can be left with our modern norms and polite indifference from strangers.

Edit: on a side note it's important to remember how algorithms work. Social medias show you the content that you most likely will react, they don't reflect the real ratio of people with these or those beliefs.

The teenage me would hold the door open for a woman. The 37 year old me would not. Women of today do not deserve such courtesy or acknowledgement.

Chivalry isn't about helping people you know. That's just being smartly selfish. Chivalry would literally be stepping in without being asked by a strange woman you don't know.

My experience has been that chivalry is alive and well. Every time I've broken down or had issues, men have come out of the woodwork to help me. Men at car places frequently give me free services if they are simple. I don't think I've paid for an oil change since owning a car. The only time I have to do my own heavy lifting is if there's no men around.

I don't really buy this complaint in general, but I can imagine it may be happening to women who aren't as cute or don't look adequately frail. Which really just shows that Chivalry always had a selfish undertone to it in the first case or a helping the desperate element. If neither fits you, I can imagine you live without chivalry.

Helping your personal friends and family members isn't chivalry, it's called not being a dick and helping your loved ones like you, and you will most likely get help in return. Chivalry would be helping people you don't know very well and hence don't expect to actually benefit from the interaction. Women are more likely to get this kind of help, with or without asking, from other women than men.

Honestly if it looks like a woman needs help in public, I don't ask, I just say "Let me help you."

Then I do the thing.

If they really don't want help, they'll say so and I'll say "OK" and walk on.

Chivalry was always about designing a code of honor so powerful dudes (knights) would police themselves and not run around pillaging people who lacked plate armor and good weapons. Women are powerful now too, so they should develop a code of their own. Until then I don’t think men are interested in giving up any leverage, they will begin to play their hand as ruthlessly as possible to get what they want.

My take on this is that the kind of ‘I was off in the world and saw a dame in need so I did her a good turn’ is decreased at a rate that more or less makes sense given the overall decrease in times people spend overall in public spaces. It probably feels like it happens less because it does happen less. But then too, a lot of us spend far more time in our homes or interacting with our families and close friends than many urban folks did in days of yore. We don’t walk down the street to buy a paper. We don’t wear hats that can blow off our heads when we’re walking in a park over lunch and go flying down the path. We load our bags of groceries into cars and drive them home, instead of carrying them six blocks. We just cross paths with each other in encumbered or distressing circumstances a lot less.

I am sure there are also other social factors at play but generally I find modern folks willing to lend each other a hand when it seems warranted. People have helped shove my car out of snowdrifts. People offer seats to elderly folks or toddler-laden mothers on the underground. People hold doors constantly. Sometimes the chivalry that is most relevant to the modern era looks different than the old school models.

Disclaimer: I can talk your ear off about medieval codes of chivalry: totally different thing that has little to do with manners.

I would go a step further to say that chivalry is not dead, it's just called simping now. Being unselfishly kind and giving toward women is not as fashionable as it once was.

I like the idea of being chivalrous, but it's just not worth it. Carry your own bags and change your own tyre.

Most people will stop to help you if they think you need help. If I'm dragging a huge luggage bag double my size super slowly across the ground and clearly going nowhere, men, women, and old ladies will stop and offer to help. Most people like helping others and feel good about it. Asking for help is just a way of telling people you need help.

Women used to be seen as more helpless. As women are seen as more capable, it makes sense that less people automatically assumes she needs help.
