This post had to be taken down because it appears to be focused on a specific situation or person. While Field Reports deal with specific situations and people, remember that the focus is different:
No worries though! Though the thread has been taken down, any conversations you have started here can still continue, and if you want to PM a mod to get their opinion on this thread, feel free to do so and they will still be able to weigh in.
For next time, remember that posts about a specific situational advice with a specific person are fine as field should be directed to Ask Seddit (/r/askseddit), not to be confused with Ask Reddit.

Definitely hitting on you dude
[–]Butter-85 81 points82 points83 points 3 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
Yes they were hitting on you! I don’t think you fucked it up in any way - you were just in shock lol. You could have said - thanks, I like your face too - and smiled. Let things go from there. Just be open to it going forward.
[–]FaithInStrangers94 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Where would it go from there?
People tend to brush over the finer details “just let the conversation move naturally” well in my experience it doesn’t usually unfold naturally after the opener and I consider myself a pretty good conversationalist so I must be missing something
[–]LucianU 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. In depends on how relaxed in the moment.
If you're relaxed, you could say something like: "What are you doing now? Do you want to eat together (or go for a walk or whatever)."
That means you feel comfortable to continue the interaction right then and there and aren't worried about what you will do or say.
[–]Ricb76 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You're probably overthinking it, you should try and maintain calmness when talking to a girl, like it's not a thing. If you struggle to do that with a hot girl, find a less hot girl to crack on. When you've worked one out you've pretty much got the basics for most women. If you're struggling for things to talk about I'd say you can practice that. Just sit at home and think of random topics, funny things to say, how you can tease. Then you'll have some foundation and ideas already. You can also take topics mentioned if you were on messenger apps. You can plan LOTS and get an advantage imo. Looks, wealth, status, personality can all help with the quality of the girl ofc.
[–]FaithInStrangers94 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It’s not a matter of being nervous so much as the girl is almost always just really fucking boring and/or bad at having an engaging conversation so I have to do all the heavy lifting.. maybe I’ve just gotten unlucky
[–]SwimComfortable7465 -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
From my experience and everyone I know, it most likely wasn't going to go anywhere even if he played the game back.

With this mentality, you won’t go anywhere with women. With all do respect.. don’t post shit like this. People need encouragement. Save the pessimism for your diary.
[–]SwimComfortable7465 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's not pessimism. I'm not telling him NOT to do it, by all means go for anything! I was just saying the base of such circumstances means it most likely wasn't anything legit.
[–]Altec5499 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Your comment implies that he shouldn’t try. Nothing encouraging. It is pessimistic

What tragedy happened in your life that created such low self-esteem and this persecution complex?
[–]SwaggyAkula 43 points44 points45 points 3 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link
Hmm, maybe it has something to do with the fact that, compared to my peers, I've never had much success with the opposite sex. A bunch of my friends and even just guys who I know from my school have girlfriends, but not me.
[–]Classy-Tater-Tots 28 points29 points30 points 3 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link
Well, the first step is not running away from the girls who come to talk to you. Everyone here has been a clueless teen too though so don't feel too bad. If it happens again, the correct response is just a humble thanks and then start a conversation. If the shirt has some special meaning, that's an excellent starting point. If not, really anything is fine. What was the last school event? Or some crazy weather? Or whatever big news in your home town? Etc.
[–]SwaggyAkula 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
I was just wearing a boring blue and black shirt, no logos or designs or anything special.
Also, saying thanks and then starting a conversation with a girl in response to her saying that she likes my face? Not to be rude, but wouldn’t that make me seem like a bit of a nerd?
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Respond with " I know it. my face is my money maker" smugly with a smile with eye contact (so they know its a joke). Clearly you have looks based on the responses so learn how to banter and tease. So you can progress beyond a girls pickup. Have fun when you are young. Live in the moment and don't be so serious.
[–]brief_thought 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Ah yes, typical nerd behavior: continuing a conversation with women who approach and compliment you out of the blue.
What planet are you from dude?
[–]V4refugee 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He said High school. From what I remember, real world advice doesn’t really apply there. At that age; breaking the law, taking unnecessary risks, and being a sociopath is what made kids popular and attractive to the opposite sex.
[–]SwaggyAkula 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Ok I phrased that poorly haha. What I meant was that, this guy is saying that I should have started talking about something as mundane as the weather in response to girls hitting on me. Now, I’m no player, but that doesn’t sound like a very effective strategy to get girls.
[–]brief_thought 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Lol okay, now I understand you. You’re right, it doesn’t sound like something that would woo a girl, but you’ve already caught her interest. Even if you had to talk about the weather, if that’s all you can think of, it’d be better to start the dialogue. It’s usually a good idea to just keep talking.
From there you can make a joke, make and observation about her (just guessing something about her is one of my favorites), find some common ground, whatever.
Let’s say you get stuck on the weather. Let’s say her face falls as you see her lose interest in you real time. Hey look, you just failed. But it’s not like failing out of college, It’s like failing a push-up. You need to fail over and over again, that’s how you get better.
You’ll see stuff as corny and ridiculous as “see a girl and ask her what time it is”. Jesus, who doesn’t have a cellphone? But it’s actually a great idea because it’s a step. You eventually get comfortable with it and improve your skills.
Does that make sense?
[–]MayhemReignsTV 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
That depends on what you talk about. If you start talking about your Star Wars collection, then that might come off a bit nerdy, not that there’s anything wrong with Star Wars 😉 I probably would get playful about the comment about the face.
[–]SwaggyAkula 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Playful in what way haha?
[–]Kyrkrim -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Flirt with them
[–]Ricb76 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It actually doesn't matter generally. You could say a bunch of things.
Thanks, why do you like it?
Are you going to lick it?
I hear its pretty comfortable, laugh give them a nudge.
You should come closer for a better look.
Basically try to be funny / tease. That's my style and it works. If you really want an idea if what to say and how to say it then watch some of the guys on Love Island show. A lot of them are naturals.
[–]LeaderOfWolves 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Bro just return a compliment if she is attraxtive decribe the fratures you like about her duh... Just be like "wow thanks that is a really big compliment coming from such a stunningly beautiful girl, & what is your name?" She laughs says thanks, her name, responds asking yours "I'm _______ nice to meet you! You've got a gorgeous smile Ashley! Are you single?" Or if you're not sure if you find her attractive just be cordial & ask her about herself & stuff.. Just show general interest in her as a person while making it physically clear you have interested in her soon as you realize you like her
[–]Altec5499 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
She says “I like your face” … your response - stop, focus, and breathe… almost every guy I know struggles with anxiety given a situation like this. You have to harness the adrenaline dump so that you can effectively reply with… “Thanks…. Your face is okay” with a wry smile to let her know you’re messing around. She may slap you on the shoulder after that or have something sarcastic to say back. This is a good way to start bantering… everything else comes with practice. You have to keep pushing yourself to talk to girls.
[–]SigmundFreud 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
To avoid coming across as a nerd, you should just tell her that you're the top sniper in the entire US armed forces.
[–]vandaalen 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]SwaggyAkula -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Also this might make me seem like a bit of an asshole, but the girls were blonde and kind of seemed like bimbos. I generally don’t like blonde girls, I like edgy rock-and roll, intellectual-type girls with long black hair
[–]Classy-Tater-Tots 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yes, you sound like a total asshole on that one.
I’m sorry man, I just don’t find blonde girls to be attractive. Obviously there are exceptions, but on average I prefer girls with black hair
[–]Classy-Tater-Tots 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Dude, you sound like an asshole cause you automatically assumed their bimbos because they're blonde and are using it as an excuse for why you didn't talk to them. Everyone can have preferences, that's perfectly fine to prefer black hair.
[–]SwaggyAkula 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Fair point. I definitely regret not talking to them
[–]AccidentallyInterest 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]SwaggyAkula 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah girls like that aren’t too easy to find but I know they’re out there haha
[–]AccidentallyInterest 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No I mean the part where you could make a post saying 'what does it mean when a girl literally compliments my face' but also you have decided you aren't into a large swathe of perfectly eligible girls because of their hair color. Do you think intellectual girls would be into that? This is coming out more harsh than I intended but focus on yourself king. And know you have to start somewhere.
[–]Chompskyy 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Hey man, I get what you're trying to say here but it's definitely showing either your age or immaturity in connecting with other people.
Try to consider that people are much deeper than the surface and that there's many of these 'bimbos' that share a lot of your same ideals and interest and being judgemental immediately from the start will eventually lead you down a path where you dismiss the personality and actual connections that you could make by just making blind assumptions in the dark. It will bite you in the ass, and it's also not the right way to go about meeting new people.
[–]SwaggyAkula 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You are absolutely right, my comment was very immature
[–]Chompskyy 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's impossible not to make instant judgements, it's the nature of humanity, but it's up to you to pick their brain and find out, you know?
Some of the very people that my brain judged negatively immediately have actually been some of the people who have come through the hardest for me or been the most interesting people :)
[–]pikecat 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I like intellectual girls with long black hair too. Good luck finding one. You can't be too picky. I did always think personality mattered most too, so always try to get to know a girl and not judge on looks.
Never did want a bimbo. However, I did end up with one once, for a few years. Was actually a fabulous time, one of my best, surprised me and challenged my self image a bit. Really nice, sweet and fun girl. Don't knock the bimbo.
Still, you don't know if this girl was actually a bimbo for not. You have to talk.
All of your experiences with girls will help you be better, and look better to other people. The way you need to speak, or flirt, with girls, as others say, comes from experience with girls.

This means they want to engage you in a Kung fu battle.
What you should've done is Kame-Hame-Haaaa'd her right through the cafeteria wall.
This exact scenario happened 2 weeks ago at Costco in the frozen food section... I drop kicked a bag of frozen chicken wings to her face.
Stop being a dum dum please.

[–]rudedesign4899 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Since the other girl mentioned the "..and your face" part the girl who complimented your outfit have liked you enough to talk with her friends about it. It's a compliment and maybe she could have a crush on you or just find you interesting. Definately someone I'd reccommend you trying to talk with again if she seemed allright. And there you go, your dad is correct. This is your time from now & forwards. Just be yourself and look open enough to be talked with and smile sometimes. A smile is golden in my opinion and who would not like to talk with someone who seems like a happy person.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, it was typical casual approach by girls. It's ok to be shocked in such situations, it's not like it was destined to escalate immediately anyways. If you like the girl back, next time you can say something like "Thanks, yours are not bad either. Wanna eat with me?"
[–]HanEyeAm 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Look, we don't know and you'll probably never know. She may have been crushing on you from afar, but since you don't know them, it seems unlikely.
They could have been mean-girl pranking you to get off on your confusion.
They could have been just practicing lines on you, a hapless and random guy. No harm intended, and what they said may be genuine. Hard to tell.
So all that to say, don't get too wrapped up in it. Maybe take it as a compliment, but I'd be more inclined to take it as a random unknown. If you see the woman again, respond to her in a way that a teen idol might react to a complementary fan. "Hey, that was a really nice thing you said the other day" or similar. And leave it at that. I wouldn't even say thanks, because you don't know if it was actually a compliment. Just comment on what she said, and see if it leads to a conversation. And it might not, and it's okay, because you are not thirsty for that gal and know there are other options.
Also, I suggest that your therapist should stop commenting on your looks. If you've been here for any amount of time, you know that a mediocre-looking guy can come across as attractive and attract women if they do all the things like dressing well, having good hygiene, have some confidence, and all the other stuff.
[–]creativedave73 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Definitely hitting on you. I was just like you in high school. Had a lot of insecurities and fears. Worked with the best looking girl in school and hardly said a word to her. So many missed opportunities in my younger years.
When a girl approaches you with a compliment, look her directly in the eye and have a conversation with her. You could have said anything. What was on your shirt? If it was a band, you could have asked her, "Do you like --?" Or if it was a polo shirt, "it's the buttons, am I right?"
Regarding your face. "So, you're saying I look okay? I should cancel the appointment with the plastic surgeon?"
Don't be afraid to talk to girls. The more you do it, the better you get. You might not think you're attractive, but you are. You're automatically attractive because you're a guy.
Do you have friends or siblings who are really good with girls? You should ask them for advice. I didn't think any girl would want to go out with me, so I never asked my friends for advice.
As a Dad to a teenage daughter, I can tell you that high school girls are just as insecure. You think in high school that the girls are so above you and unapproachable, but really they are easy to talk to and win over.
[–]Amikatey 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
(I was just wearing a boring blue and black shirt, no logos or designs or anything special.) I know it's ok to suck at first with the opposite sex and be as weirdly innocent as possible but the truth is that. It wasn't the shirt that look good. It was you that look good. To be clear here they were just trying to say "hey we want you to talk to us Incase you were doubhting or think we will reject you we wount," which was why the freind though it would be cool to brashly tell you " and your face too" as you get to understand women better you begin to know how to push stuff forward but Incase this happens next time, don't be scared to carry the Convo and be warm. And give your own quota and then escalate on them . If need be. Most girls wount do all the work, they have done alot already by that bold move. You'll get better with practice man.

When a woman says she likes your shirt, she’s really saying, “ I like how you look. You look good.”
Last time a women gave me an aggressive comment like that, I put my arm right around her neck and took her inside the concert venue, and we spend the rest of the night together. Ended up sleeping together.
If a women is aggressive with you, she is basically telling you that it’s ok to be aggressive with her too.

[–]SwimComfortable7465 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Usually when girls are giggling to each other and leave things as a shock for the other person to get stuck on, they have little intentions on doing anything with what shock they just brought. They just like the moment even if they did think you were cute.
Should say I just graduated high school btw so I'm very much in tune with this type of stuff!
[–]SwaggyAkula 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I see, that makes sense. If I may ask, do you think that they actually did find me cute?

Could be either hitting on you or playing games. I was never able to find that out when I was a young man many years ago.
I had many weird encounters in my youth that did not made any sense at all to me at all. Once random girl on the street approached me and that her friend wants something from me. That is the literal translation of what she said in German and in german this slang word is used to signalise possible intrest in a person.
Another time a random girl asked me on the street if I want to f**k
In both cases I just walked away without saying anything. It just felt too weird at the moment and I do not wanted to say anything.
I can just say if this happens again to me do not make my mistake. Use this instances as chance to practise to talk to girls.
Just do not take it serious what they are saying because you never know what this is about. Just talk to them and see how they react.
No matter if what if they are just pranking you or if they are serious it is a good practise for talking to girls.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
If that’s not hitting on you then what is? Are you expecting them to strip naked and start morning your name seductively before you know if they are hitting on you ?

How do I do that?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It takes a while to realize you're worth a damn to the opposite gender. It's just part of growing up. And looks aren't everything, especially in person and not on apps, there's energy, vibes, pheromones, being around friends etc.
[–]SDdude81 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Hey, I've had a few girls say they liked my shirt a few times in my life. Then they said I had a face like an ogre.
Damn, really?
[–]SDdude81 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Hah no, just a joke no comment at all about my face.i was just thinking of a show where a guy always gets called an ogre.
It could either be them hitting on you, or it could have been a dare from one of her friends (y'all are still in high school, that kinda shit is more common during that time).
[–]IkoIkonoclast 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've had this happen to me several times recently, I have been approached by a woman in her 20's who complimented my shirt and general looks. I'm 65+, I doubt they were hitting on me. I just accepted the compliment and felt pretty good about it.
Nah u aint fuck up the interaction dude thats normal. Its okay to be awkward like that cause u literally didnt know. Its not like you can never talk to them again lol, you literally can. To me it looks like they actually do like you so ur straight. Maybe next time you see them again start up a convo. We’re our worst critics though. Try accepting and loving the way you look no matter what cause you’re the only person u got. Good luck bro
