You can get a girl's number after 2 mins, if you're smooth enough. I posted this, to try and help other guys because it's helped me. There are a number of ways to approach someone, and I'm not big on rehearsed lines, but, this one is easy to sell, and leaves you in a really good place. You pull it off, you've got a girl smiling, thinks you're funny, and from there, just talk. Be upbeat, sound like you live a fun life, and are having a fun night, and say "Hey, I'm leaving soon, but I want to see you again. Is there a number I can reach you at?" It's worked for me every single time -- the key is to be confident, be smooth, SMILE, etc. A girl who has just been made to laugh, and is smiling, and in the presence of an apparently-suave guy (she doesn't know you've been reading about what to do in these situations, she's just riding her emotions), WANTS you to take her number, they WANT to get the number of the smooth, fun, confident guy, not the dork draped on her, talking her ear off.

EDIT: In fact, it's actually better in this case, to be in and out -- less is more.

I never actually asked for her number, it was offered to me.

Truth be told, I don't use this as a pick up line. I use it mainly to brighten somebody's day, but sometimes, it just works out. She was a bit dumbfounded after the initial compliment. Sort of like a 'me? Beautiful?' reaction. So the first words out of her mouth (after a large grin of course) were , "I, uh, thanks, you're beautiful too." A knee jerk reciprocation. An exchange of names was made and a few quick snippets about the architecture of the university we were in. It was she who asked me to join her for lunch the next day and gave me her number.

So all in all it was about two minutes from compliment to parting ways. And it may be important to note that I didn't go into this expecting to pick her up. Treat people like people and good things can happen.

Not a girl, but there's a pretty intuitive reason why you're mostly correct (though it might take a few minutes to explain): When a girl (or guy, doesn't matter) happens to have a particularly attractive physical feature (say, really bright big eyes), how often do you think she's gonna get compliments about it? Probably all the time, and unless that feature went through a lot of changes while she was growing up, she's been receiving those same compliments for basically her entire life. And especially if she doesn't have too many other "unique" features, then she'll get those particular compliments far more often than any others. It's like if you have a pretty unique name, and people constantly comment on it or make jokes (even lighthearted ones) about it -- it gets annoying, even if people mean well.

Whereas when she's picking out a dress, or some shoes, or she's doing up her hair a certain way, she's making certain subjective choices because she hopes other people will appreciate them (usually). By appreciating those kinds of things, you're confirming for her that her choice was a good one -- you're essentially admiring her decision-making skills, more than the physical thing itself. So she's basically thinking "Yes! I did pick the right shoes, and this person was nice enough to let me know." Of course, nowadays, even those types of comments might be seen in a negative light, so I'd recommend only using them when you genuinely appreciate something about her.

Even better if you comment on something that has nothing to do with her physical appearance -- like her purse, or maybe she's wearing a certain band shirt (so when you compliment the shirt, you're really just complimenting her taste in music), or the book she's reading -- virtually anything where you're commenting on something less "shallow" than what she looks like.

Commenting on something that looks aesthetically pleasing is basically the definition of "shallow" (it's not too far removed from a comment like "I only like you because you're hot"). OP's example doesn't exactly fit that though, so it's automatically "better." He starts with a lighthearted "joke," and then his comment about her cute smile is a conclusion of that joke, not just a shallow appreciation of her smile. Jokes/teases are great because they can apply to almost anything, and the fact that it's a joke automatically changes/deepens the context.

tl;dr -- yeah, for the most part, commenting on a girl's smile isn't something I'd recommend as an opener (especially when she has a uniquely pretty smile -- if it's a fairly normal smile, your compliment carries more weight, because she might not hear it very often). I tend to stick to situational compliments (what she's wearing, what she's reading, how she's acting, shit like that).

I was going to add (but didn't, because my comment was too long already) that I hardly ever give out any sort of compliments. I stick to situational things, but even in some of the examples I mentioned, it's rarely in the form of a "compliment." Fact is, a conversation's more easily started when you say something neutral or negative. The easiest example I can think of is when you each like 2 rival sports teams. When you say her team "sucks" (even when you're just messing around), she's guaranteed to respond by upping the ante. Now you've got some banter going, and you can take it anywhere you want.

Not to say that liking the same team would be bad or anything, but in my experience, that harsh banter where you both pretend to hate each other is far more likely to lead to some sexytime. When you're at a bar, you're gonna find some people rooting for the same team, and some rooting against them. She'll be talking to at least a few other guys who are rooting for her team, who will all celebrate with her when they score (or whatever).

But when you're the guy rooting against her and her team, now you've got a lot of options for how you're gonna handle it. You can start making bets with her, you can boo any time she cheers, you can offer to buy/take shots when certain things happen, etc. Whereas when you're just cheering along with her, that's essentially all you're doing. Yeah, it builds a sense of camaraderie, but unless you're separating yourself from the chaff, you're just like any other guy there supporting the same team.

And that same idea applies to literally everything. It's risky though -- if you take it too far, she might legitimately end up hating you by the end of the night. You have to walk on the razor's edge between legitimately offending her and just messing around. When you play it right though, it's basically the quickest way to hook up with someone (not counting random situations where you drunkenly make out and shit like that).

Giving compliments is not a bad thing. Giving them away is. Flattery will only get you so far. I'm not saying you should never say positive things about a girl. I'm saying, with reference to my own experiences and with a girl chiming in to agree with me, that using a complement to get a conversation started with someone is a good way to get yourself added, in her mind at that moment in time, to a group of people that probably didn't end up getting anywhere with her. I'm not saying it won't work or it can't work. I'm just saying that you'd probably be better off saving it, because first impression are huge and I don't think this is a reliable or generally favourable one to make.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, while compliments are certainly a good thing to use, circulation makes the value go down. Use them sparingly and they will have more impact when you do. Girls aren't looking for ass kissers, they're looking for men.

Ha my point was I think it's a really lame line, extraordinarily lame actually. Maybe it's just my own viewpoint having worked in the service industry and having people tell me I should "try to smile more." I'll look happy when I feel happy, until then, kindly fuck off. It's also kind of condescending honestly, but usually you can get away with condescension if it's witty. This is just DUMB though on all fronts. It's like something that awkward 50-year old single guy says to a younger women thinking he's a baller but it just comes off as strange. It is all about delivery though, but damn. I like the examples in other comments though.

Obviously just my own viewpoint though. We're not all after the same types of girl and I'm sure there are a lot of girls that might like this, they're just not the kind of girls I'd expect myself to be attracted to.
