Because several things are true. One, a male domestic violence victim is more likely to be arrested than to be believed. Two, male victims are the most unreported crimes across the board. Three, since half of all domestic violence is bilateral, men getting arrested even if both were abusing each other skews the stats.

I'm male and in a heterosexual monogamous relationship, and if my partner hit me, I would not call the cops, cause unless I have a literal knife sticking out of me, I fully expect to either not be taken seriously, or risk having my partner say I hit them, knowing they would be taken much more seriously. I probably wouldn't even tell my family, cause they're all trad and wouldn't take it seriously either. I'd rather not get the "you look fine to me"s

I’m a male victim of domestic violence in the UK.

As far as I can tell, it’s completely acceptable for women to abuse (male) children, but it’s not acceptable for those boys to grow up with trauma from that abuse.

When the police did a welfare check on me, they consoled my childhood abuser while threatening to arrest me for having trauma. Told me I was imagining it, and I’m not allowed to critique a women’s behaviour.

Cannot make this shit up. I have to live a life of trauma and mental illness, all because my own country does not believe I am deserving of help because of my gender. And somehow, this is seen as “equality” by feminists, despite being blatant sexism and discrimination.

Fuck this stupid country. We are brainwashed into being feminists in school. Just to be released into a society the complete opposite of what we were taught.

No option to be a man here. The numbers are so skewed because men are not allowed to have emotions or opinions. And if we question it, we could go to prison? What a joke of a country. People need to know how pathetic this country is.

Not sure how specific I can really get without doxing. Mom hit me, I hit her back the same way. Her shitty cheating boyfriend calls the cops, I don't know what he said. I was only allowed to leave because my father was entitled to custody that week and was already on his way to take me to his place in the next state. I probably would have been arrested anyway if I wasn't so scrawny or I didn't cry in front of the cops or if I was old enough to drive.

So its been my experience that violence against women is taken a lot more seriously than violence against children. Too many people butt into this topic about the size difference or the power imbalance(not sure where that is) with men vs women, but that all goes out the door when its women vs children. Then its just 'discipline' or 'she does it because she cares so much.'

Overall for men though, they don't have outs like violence shelters, they don't have a guarantee to custody if they leave(you will probably get amber alerted if you take the kids to your parents house), and people don't give a shit. I think men just get pushed to snapping by women that know they can get away with it. And of course it depends on the kind of people that are getting into these relationships. Personally I think an easy way to avoid a lot of the worst relationship troubles is just pick people that are sober, and its gone well so far I guess.

Im not sure about in the UK, but I've seen things from Australia that suggested that police should arrest "the person most in need of protection".

ANROWS has actually complained that too many women are being misidentified as the abuser in domestic violence situations.

They even complained about police using his injuries as evidence even though she reported a long history of abuse (as if abusers never lie and DARVO isn't a thing) suggesting that police should take her word for it and arrest the injured man.

And when a woman dies (by his hand or hers) after being the respondent on a AVO (or both of them were) its proof she was misidentified as the abuser, (according to ANROWS ) but when a man dies at her hand after he she was the respondent on an AVO (or both of them were) thats proof that she was a victim who had to kill her abuser

Despite the infuriating levels of gender bias coming from ANROWS they do make some good points about the difficulty police face when deciding who to arrest when arriving at a dv scene.

The caller, could be either an abuser trying to get ahead of a call or a victim in need of help, injuries can be from being abused, from abusing, from being restrained, not even visible yet, self inflicted, the person acting nuts, or even attacking the police can be the abuser, or a victim who's been teed up to loose it just as the cops arrive, previous orders or reports against them could be useful info or misidentifications or even being used against them, both sides often claim to be the victim, even video evidence can be cut or angled in a misleading way.

I disagree with their suggestion that today's violence should be viewed with a view of the whole relationship and coercive control and even as a reaction to violence experienced in a previous relationship. (That's a phenomenon, for sure, but not an excuse for violence, and shouldn't be a police consideration.)

But police often rock up to confusing scenes and others that aren't as straight forward as they seem.

Add in the fear of arriving to the next Gabby Pettito situation.

Add in that noone analyzed the footage of Jorge Torres getting arrested the way that they analyzed the footage of Gabby Pettito not getting arrested, and...

Into the chaos of uncertainty we can poor some gender bias, some fear that a smaller or weaker person might be "the person most in need of protection" even if they are currently the abuser... in the event that its mutual/cyclical/the stronger victim ever snaps and fights back....

Add in that misidentifying a male victim as the abuser will be overlooked/understood because of the uncertainty, while "misidentifying" a female victim can get articles written about it.

And you have a recipie for 'just arresting the man' unless its obvious wrong (and sometimes even when it is.)

A model which assumes that in all cases of DV involving a man and a woman the man is always the aggressor / abuser..

Then it's no surprise that men are the majority of arrests..

Go watch TikTok’s of women that will openly and proudly admit that their hit their boyfriends or TikTok’s of men who admit their girlfriends hit them. There will be hundreds of comments from men saying their relationship dynamic is the exact same and that they’re “right where they want to be”. I’d go as far as to say that some men like these dynamics or at the very least they THINK they do. Is the criminal justice system not taking female abusers seriously or are men not taking female abusers seriously?

First, males are less likely to realize they're being victimized. They are more likely to play it down as "I deserved it" or "Oh she's not really hitting me, it was just a little slap, nothing serious" or "oh no she's not violent with me, she's just a little excentric" or things like that.
Even if they do, they are less likely to call the police, or tell someone about it who will call the police on their behalf
Even if they do call the police, the police is less likely to actually come to the place where the abuse is taking place
Even if the police shows up, they are less likely to make an arrest in case of female-on-male violence
Even if they do make an arrest, they are less likely to arrest the right person
(Also, even if an arrest of the right person is made, it is less likely to be followed by actual conviction and sentencing).

This adds a multitude of filters that make it unlikely a woman who abuses her male partner will ever be arrested. Obviously, even in case of male-on-female violence, only a fraction of all these DV lead to an arrest. But the situation is much worse when it comes to female-on-male DV.

This is not something I say based on anecdotal evidence. There are actual studies that back up all of this. This is actually the saddest part of it all: if media, governments, organizations in general spent a little time studying the scientific literature on the subject rather than believing some activist's talking points, they'd now the evidence of all of this is right there.

It’s the police. Lots of police are idiots who are training deficient. It’s also the reason why a black guy is asked to step out of the vehicle while the white guy gets a warning for the same traffic violation. Police are humans and unfortunately have biases that everyone has. Unfortunately not all departments are trained equally or held accountable.

Men getting arrested is no exception. Cops respond to scenes where the man IS clearly responsible but they make it the default assumption which is a dangerous practice.

We need better training and to end qualified immunity. It all comes back to this.

Why the assumption that the 40% are perpetrated mostly by women?

Also, domestic violence is a huge issue and the police and judicial system need to update and review their policies as men feel alienated and unable to speak up and ask for help. Every victim, regardless of gender, should be supported and taken seriously.

This happened to me on two occasions with an abusive ex-girlfriend. I was arrested on both occasions when I called 911, despite being assaulted and reporting that things were stolen from me that I wanted back (she left the scene on both occasions and then came back when officers called her to do so and by that time she had just made up some story about me that was a lie, so my 911 call was completely disregarded and the truth of what happened that I stated was also completely disregarded). I spent over 30 days in jail for the second incident and the woman I speak of in fact ended up, bailing me out, although I had to get her to sell my computer, her computer and making the deal that I would buy her her computer back when I got released. It made me distrust police, hate police, and give me PTSD like symptoms to even be involved in situations with police officers. Absolutely devastating for my mental health. If anyone is curious, I am no longer with that person and what I learned is that if there are any red flags, that’s a woman may become aggressive then I have to completely just end the relationship at that point because if it comes down to a situation that has gotten out of hand and you need protection by the police, they are not there for you to call because there is a high likelihood you will be arrested.

There’s also a situation where I finally made the decision to completely disengage from my ex-girlfriend, and made me have a much stronger dislike for police, which occurred about a year after the second instance where I was arrested I described above, where she had in fact, assaulted me in the morning, and I had called the police on her although I made the poor decision not to press charges that day (she hit me with a baseball bat) when I refused to get her phone charger from the other room (yes this is shit you can’t script). Funny, not funny, anyway… I would not allow her into my apartment later that evening as I expected her to continue acting insane, and started recording on my phone as I’m talking to her from the inside of my apartment and she is at the door telling her I don’t want to see her that night and to please go away. I then don’t hear her at the door any longer and take another video approximately 10 minutes after the first showing that I’m still on the inside of the apartment and she has not entered. I hear a knock at the door, it is the police. I opened the door and they immediately put me in handcuffs. I am in handcuffs asking why they are arresting me and in handcuffs trying to show them the videos that I took proving that I had not even physically seen her that night and was telling her to go away. She had said that I hit her strangled her, etc.. I had no marks of my body obviously because nothing happened and I had video proof and I was begging them to pay attention to what had just happened and they would not listen and I was arrested. When I was taken down to the station, my phone with the video evidence, proving my innocence was placed into a property bag never shown to the detectives and I was charged with crimes of assault. That is a form of domestic violence itself weapon, police against someone to have them arrested face criminal charges cause mental distress that is a situation where despite having been completely innocent and showing I’m innocent, the police were just all primed up and ready to go to put the “bad guy“ in handcuffs and cart him off to jail. To me police are like cockroaches, just climbing through the walls and infesting your apartment and your life. So in that instance, the cockroach police actually played part in abusing me. It also had looked at that time like I was the abuser guy because of those two times on record where I was arrested because I called the police for protection. So calling police got me in their system looking like an abusive guy so my seeking protection actually hurt me in the future when I’m in a situation trying to tell truthfully that I had no part of it and had not physically seen the person that evening to have done this. I got away from that girl, but not before after that case was thrown out literally four days following when I was not even “on scene” and she had basically stalked me calling 200 times etc. because I had cut it off at that point due to what she had done, she called police, apparently outside of my apartment once again, put marks on herself and said that I had once again beat her up. Long story short, I ended up discovering there was a warrant for my arrest for this alleged incident and I ended up spending 40 days in jail because of this. Thankfully, I had time to avoid the police and gather the evidence I needed to show my innocence after that warrant was issued, and the cops were creeping around the outside of my apartment speaking to my neighbors, knocking on my door doing their little cockroach disgusting invasive thing… that’s the evidence supplied to the DA (I would avoid doing this just as advice) in conjunction with the fact that she gave a fabricated letter of employment to the district attorney, which was then submitted to the court because they didn’t first investigate it, the district attorney finally came to their senses and took it upon themselves to withdraw the charges that I was facing. So I went through all of these situations with police and the justice system, which were totally messed up and backwards, and that was how I finally got away from that person… but the police certainly played a role in mislabeling me and treating me as if I was an abuser, even though I was the victim in a very major way.

This may have gotten off track and as long winded so I do apologize and I hope that the parts that you take from it are the ones that relate to the original post. At the end of the day, this just made me hate police and the justice system, but my view of women remains unchanged that there are some very solid good women out there. You just have to be careful with whom you get involved with romantically.

I think part of it is because physically we are not the same. I had an ex who punched my in the face on several ocassions... it was like she bumped a fluffy toy on my chin. It pissed me off but it was veeeeery far away from doing physical harm.

On the other hand, I dated a bumble girl who told me her ex punched her. She showed me the picture. One punch. One single punch. He wasn't even standing, they were in a car, so he didn't grab momentum.... well, her whoooole face was one freaking bruice. Her eyes were black. It was bad... and it was just one punch. I felt horrible for her.

So to answer the question, if you see it at mass scale- when women become physically violent, there's almost always little to no physical harm done. Versus when a man gets violent with a woman, the physical harm tends to be much greater.

Like it or not, men tend to be taller and stronger, if someone disagrees then they have cognitive dissonance.

I also think womens way of being violent is usually not violent, they use other means like social, psychological or financial violence.

I'll always say it: the ethics of a person does not depend on their gender... but shitty people will use the power dynamics of their gender to their favor. Shitty men will resort to physical violence or if its old school tradcon family, subvert the wife economically. Women on the other hand will use false accusations, destroy social reputation, gold diggers targets wealth, manipulates men with their beauty, etc.
