Neither are inherently oppressed. Ive literally worked both sides of this coin and am baffled why everyone always needs to select a winner for the Oppression Olympics here. Either job has unique challenges, like... any other job. I’ll break them down if you like:

Escorting: Entirely dependent on the individual. Escorting is a highly social job that requires the ability to effortlessly code-switch in and out of upper-class sensibilities. You’re entirely responsible for your own promotional work, and if you aren’t familiar with marketing strategies it’ll be obvious. Poor marketing brings lower quality business, and a much higher chance of getting bottom-feeding shitlords who look for girls with low self-esteem that they can bully. If you ARE bullied, or god forbid robbed or raped, there’s pretty much no action you can take. Going to the police is rarely useful since the industry is illegal, and if you get a shitlord COP it’s not uncommon for police to also harass and rape and coerce sex from hookers, since there’s nothing they can do to defend themselves. (I’m only talking about downsides here, since that’s the topic. There’s a huge stigma against men that see escorts so I want to clarify that MOST men are perfectly normal, and yes many are high-tier well educated, successful, happy, intelligent dudes who’ve figured it all out, and they just really enjoy spending time with ladies who have ALSO figured it all out. Everyone is consenting and happy and that little edge of being naughty just makes it more fun. ...if done right.)

$15/hr Job: There’s far less stress. You have health insurance, guaranteed hours and even if you’re not much of a self-starter you can generally count on succeeding at your job. The downsides are mostly in over-worked hours and low pay.

Essentially, the high risk job has potential to produce a higher turn out. But also has worse downsides.

The obsession with women “being able” to escort as though it were unfair that men can’t just shows how small minded the complainer is. Anyone, including men, could be an escort if they are smart enough at marketing and are willing to actually do the work. Most people just aren’t willing to do the work because most straight men are super uncomfortable with the idea of sucking another man’s dick for money.

The one with less choice. Most women would choose the cashier job over putting out for random men and most men would choose the cashier job over putting out for random men.

The internet does glamourise it a lot. If it was really so desirable to your average woman, why are there so many pretty 18-25 year olds wandering around not doing it. The potential money is so high because like working on an oil rig to most people it's undesirable.

You are more "oppressed", meaning there is more in your life that is out of your control than in hers. I don't think being an escort is an easy job. I bet they work their asses off, but movie stars also work their asses off when they are shooting a movie, doesn't mean they are oppressed. Women who are blessed with the education, personality and looks to make it work will probably find life working in her favor, generally.

I don't know exactly what kind of bigger point you're trying to make, but whatever it is, I doubt this situation supports it the way you think it does.

I don't think either is "oppressed" but if you want to ask me who has it worse, then based on my experience of jobs like retail and knowing escorts, the cashier on minimum wage definitely has it worse.

You specified "elite" escort in your OP so we can assume this is a classy high end one not some streetwalker prostitute. She probably has a pretty nice life, loads of money, and gets to spend a lot of time at exclusive parties.

Your average retail worker is barely making ends meet assuming that's their main job not just a side gig.

An “elite“ escort would be leading the better life here by far, in general the more money you have, the more agency you have in society. Though I fail to see how the comment at the bottom is saying “elite escorts are oppressed“ - it seems to me like it says “not all of the sex industry is as glamurous as the life of elite escorts“

Elite escorts by definition are the very top of the industry - they can have all those benefits while also choosing their clients. However in the prostitution “industry“ as a whole, those “high end“ people are the outliers, not the rule. That seems to be essentially what the comment you posted is about. If you are not on the top, you won't get expensive dinners and adventures with interesting men, you'll get random ugly men in hotel rooms who hopefully just pay you and gtfo without being dangerous. In general the sex industry is linked closely to organized crime and tends to be shady even in countries where it is perfectly legal and just statistically is not very safe for the people working in it (except the mentioned very high end escorts).

It's like saying “top artists get millions for a blanc canvas“ while the reality is that most artists make next to nothing for years and are extremely lucky to even be able to live from it. Or saying “Top Mafiosi/ Gangsters are rich - being a criminal is great“ when the vast majority of criminals are poor and end up in prison or shot.

So I'd say: high end escort >> cashier ~> majority of sex workers.

I would personally take a cashier job over being a regular sex worker even with slightly higher pay because at least no one penetrates the cashier and it is generally a safer, more respectable job. However there are male escorts too (for gay men) and they generally seem to make ok money and are a bit less shady so idk if you're interested in that ...

Easy and objective question, the way you made it.

The men:

Little or no chance to grow a career and make more money;
Attempting to change careers might threaten subsistence;
Work shifts prevent personal growth and discourage changes further;
There's no incentive to hide the career, and it causes pity (low status);
Money they make can not buy status.

Are the top of their trade;
Might have parallel careers;
There's incentive to hide the career, but it causes mixed feelings due to different perceptions (hard to say it causes low social status and if it worries her she can be discreet);
Can buy status;
Career change is undesirable because they're the top of one trade, but doesn't threaten subsistence;
Only con I picture is "might be seen as worst than other women as long term partner by some or most men".

You're making a very unfair comparison. Women that were born gifted (with looks at least) and worked their way to the top of a controversial field, versus men that were not born with so much luck, working in fields that offer nothing good nor chances to grow, and to whom escaping the condition is hard, but is an uncontroversial field...

A more fair comparison happens around me, third world country, with ugly prostitutes and lower working class men. The men are not unlike the bullets there but attempts to change careers might cause death.
Women make enough to have some dignity and might pursue parallel careers and have choice to change although there's little incentive for them to, but they might be stained forever (unlike their prettier counterparts these ones won't cause sympathy), are exposed to "labor risks" that might just be the worst among legal professions or worst than any legal professions...
That's a harder pick. I'd still take the pussy though.

Your two examples are somewhat equal in their oppression based on the work they are selling based on their sex and what they are expected to offer society. Neither would willingly do either job without being paid. The male worker is being exploited for his time and physical labor (which is ultimately going to be more valuable than $15/hr), and same for the female - the ultimate exploitation is of her sex.

The man, I think, will get to walk away with slightly more dignity if he happens to be younger or the same age as the female in the OP. If he is relatively younger, he will be able to advance his career without this job affecting his reputation in a negative way at all. In fact, it will be seen as respectable and he can be proud to put it on his resume. Not so with the female's job. If he is significantly older than her, they are more equal.

I think my issue is less with the statement “Some people excel more because of natural aptitude” than it is “Escorting is comparable with a $15/hr job.” They’re so radically different with such radically different types of skill. Most escorts don’t make it. Working girls are a dime a dozen and standing out enough to build a reputation and a client base is difficult. Many give up before ever meeting a single client.

I feel we probably have a pretty wide agreement that jobs with upward mobility benefit competent people more that people with less aptitude in that field. That’s common sense.

But “not excelling” is very different from “being oppressed”. In such circumstances, one’s own limitations are holding them back, not the social majority. Meanwhile, people make jokes about killing hookers. Others do kill them. And even high end escorts are “asking for it” by many people’s opinion. “You can’t rape a hooker” is another one.

I would concede, however, that the women (and men like me) that have worked in this field and learned to succeed are people that tend to have pretty firm senses of self worth and are pretty immune to harassment. Haters hate. Learning this sort of mental fortitude has benefited me in all subsequent jobs I’ve had since. It’s amazing how much you can get done when you don’t care what everyone else is doing.
