The actual hierarchy lacks empirical support and the rank-ordering of the needs has been questioned (Wahba & Bridwell 1976). It's based on Western ideology and is considered ethnocentric by some as it doesn't account for differences in the cultural needs of societies (Hofstede 1984). For instance, it has been shown to not apply to collectivist cultures (Gambrel & Cianci 2003).

Nowhere. I frankly don't require sex, orgasms are fun but not everything. I haven't had sex and frankly care little about it beyond my own self indulgences (which is often). My SO getting a pentakill is all the 'sex' I need. Sure I want to have sex one day, but it's quite low on my list of priorities. Although, I concede my autism probably makes it less appetizing.

I just want a comfortable lifestyle where I can do the same thing everyday and leave my house once every blue moon.

I would be perfectly fine with dating a male who is a voluntary celibate, that is the importance of sex to me. Having intimate relationships in which I can discuss feelings, ideas or problems with is far more important.

It's weird cuz sex is a physiological need so clearly it should be in that category but it's also part of the love/belonging category so it should be there as well. Intimacy also overlaps the safety and love/belonging category. To me sex and intimacy are indivisible but not to most of the rest of world apparently.

Has it's location on the pyramid changed with time?

I never thought about it but I think it's probably gotten more important as I've grown up.

Sex would rank highly for me, intimate sex would be higher. I would put it only slightly below a sense if community and belonging.

My opinion is in the OP. I'm 32, Purple, female sex/male gender, and I consider sex and intimacy to be very nearly the same thing. My need for sex gets satisfied only about 1-2x a week, except when my lover's depression gets bad.

I guess it's where Maslow says it is. Intimacy is probably in the middle, although I'm not sure what a lack of intimacy would look like, unless you're talking about strictly romance. They're definitely different in my mind; I can have one without the other and vice versa.

I would place both sex and intimacy at the top of the pyramid, as part of self-actualization. If this question had been asked a few years ago I think I might have placed intimacy at the third level, love/belonging, and sex at the esteem level. But as I've grown more self-sufficient and have started to get over the phase were I get a huge self-esteem boost from being found sexually attractive those things have become more of top-level needs.

I can mostly take or leave sex. Intimacy is critical. But also, I'm really into sex. I've had a full time live in fuck toy. I'd like to have one again, but neither of my current partners qualify. One is just not that good at fucking, the other has some serious disabilities that make sex rare. But I'm genuinely happy, more so than when I had my fuck toy.

Physiological. This isn't so much my opinion, as it is a statement of fact. Most depictions of the pyramid you find on Google Images outright list sex as a physiological need. Here are some examples:

Sex can be anything from a physiological need to a mere tool, depending on your biological sex and your psyche.

For me, having had nothing but negative sexual experiences, I wouldn't place sex itself anywhere on my pyramid. The biological need is there, but my negative predisposition to it is orders of magnitude stronger.

I have to say, though, for all the mindfuckery that came with sex, it provided some pretty solid validation. For a guy, in this society, there is nothing more reassuring than a girl willing to touch you.

As I grow older, the reassurance is fading and I miss it. Maybe, in some cases, people may report a need for sex but what they really need is esteem.

Intimacy is something I fantasize a lot about. "Someone I could tell my secrets to", the song goes. However, I have sparse knowledge of what it feels like. Somehow I've made it all the way to self-actualization without having my intimacy need completely fulfilled, so I guess it would have to be the level after that - i.e. according to the Maslow model, once my self-actualization need is fulfilled, it'll be time to work on intimacy.

But with the right someone? It's...it's hard to say what it is. It's helping me survive - I'm no longer as scared as I once was, all the nights before she claimed me.

Sex and intimacy is a luxury. You only want sex when you see fertile women walking around and you only crave intimacy when you have nothing better to do other than wallowing in self-pity.

I have lived my entire life without sex and intimacy from anyone other than my mother, and I'm doing fine. I don't want to have to tolerate the ugly (both in body and soul) creatures that the females are in order to satiate any of the two desires. I'd rather live with a dream that one day, I'll find The One, and that's probably going to be a male creation

I'm not really getting any sex in my normal life, but I'm fairly sure sex is not a need for me, it's barely even a want. Not sure about intimacy though.
