A quick look at the crime statistics shows that Japan has lower crime rates across the board, but the difference in rape rate is a staggering 1:27, in contrast with murder rate being 1:5.

Now, I have my own ideas for why women are unhappier with lower crime rates: Women thrive on manipulating men into committing crimes for them. Japanese men have very low testosterone levels (and still decreasing), leading to them being harder to manipulate with sexuality.

Also, many women have rape fantasies, and while I don't think that is enough to make them unhappier with a lack of rape, because rape can bring a lot of unhappiness to them, I think it's enough to at least lower the first derivative of how much happiness women would gain with less rape, or lose with more rape.

Also, Japan is a somewhat traditional society, so you could argue that women are oppressed there, and are unhappy from a lack of freedom, but that is not so. Women in japan have choices, but women choosing temp jobs instead of careers and taking a lot of time off to travel is again, a CHOICE. Japan has about a 13% representation of women in high government positions, and representation in the labor force is increasing as well. Certain above average pay professions such as nursing already have a higher representation of women.

Obviously, men not approaching women and not giving them as much money and resources anymore will make women unhappier as well.
