We have had this talk before. Men and women have different definitions for respect.

For women, respect means common decency.

For men, respect means deference.

If you need further proof just read the replies and you will see that there are 2 clearly different answers. One is "Everyone should get basic respect" (this is common decency), and the other is "Respect is given when it has been earned (this is deference).

I don't think I've met any women who expect respect purely for their gender. Plenty who believe people should be treated with a basic level of respect, but not specifically women.

Sure. But all humans are entitled to a basic level of respect just by virtue of being human.

The reason people expect that treatment is because they've been socialised to expect it. It's not a matter of being accorded greater respect -- it's a matter of expecting to be treated as slightly incapable.

Many men get offended if you don't let them hold doors open for you. My SO feels very 'capable' and manly when I let him open jars for me and carry bags for me. I let men do these things out of respect for them, not because I think I deserve them -- because I want the men in my life to feel masculine and it's a small thing, so I'm not going to make a huge fuss about benign sexism even tho, on the inside, I'm thinking, "Seriously, wtf, I can carry my own bags!!"

And look -- yes, it's unfair. But people are always going to reward beautiful people for being beautiful. Beauty is valuable, this is the way of the world. Honestly, I hate to have to say this, but tough love: if you drew the short straw, get the fuck over it.

This way of handling the situation (whining, saying that you're going to 'disrespect' people to make things fair) is far from graceful or admirable.

I think it's pretty common to believe everyone deserves a basic level of respect, but I've never met a woman who said she deserve to be respected because she was female.

I've met women who expected special treatment for being women, but that's not expecting respect.

They expect men to reach something on the top shelf if they are too short, or carry their bag for them if it's too heavy.

I'm a girl who is taller than most of her (female) friends. I am constantly being asked to reach high things, and I'm the one who moves furniture and carries heavy cases of water in from the car. I am asked to do these things because I am the tallest and strongest person present, and thus most equipped to.

They expect male friends to listen to their tough day they had at work.

...that's what friends do? Do you think women don't expect their female friends to listen to their problems?

My view is that woman do reserve special respect for being woman. And, if they're snobby because of daddy's money, well, maybe they'll give me some of daddy's money if i show 'em a bit of respect. And, men also deserve special respect for being men. You know who doesn't deserve respect? Those who don't respect other people, who spread disdain, regardless of gender.

All people deserve a baseline level of respect, aka common decency and courtesy. However, no gender deserves some special level of respect simply for their gender. Honestly the only people I've met who act like your OP were the spoiled rich kids I went to law school with.

I feel like you've loaded a lot of meaning into the word "expect" here. I would say a women who "expects" these things in the way your post suggests is someone who is pretty happy with traditional gender roles and not exactly at the barricades fighting for equality.

In the normal use of the word I think most of us (at least I do) would expect our friends to help us carry or reach things if needed.

Serious question, but can you not do things without getting anything in return (or what you want)?

As a tall feeeeemale I often help those who are shorter than me. Now that doesn't mean I wait at the library 24/7 for some shortie to need help. Nor does it mean jetting across the library from the other side if I see someone struggling. It means, that if you are within my radius, and you're in need of help, I'll help you to the best of my capability.

Everyone always gets the term "respect" confused with "common courtesy".

Women, men, retards, old people, young people, and everyone else get "common courtesy". That's basically polite treatment; a societal compact/agreement to not violate one's bodily integrity and to not invade each individual's "personal bubble" space. That's what everyone's entitled to.

"Respect" denotes deference and admiration, which must be earned. Deference and admiration are not given to everyone, men or women.

Women get professional respect (professional deference and admiration for their professional accomplishments), only if they have earned it, and only within that professional milieu.

Women don't get deference and admiration merely for being born with vaginas.

Women aren't entitled to respect for being women, but for being human, just as men are. It's up to you whether you want to help people out or not, excluding life-threatening situations, where you are obligated to help. You aren't obligated to do anything to others beside not cause any kind of harm to others by action or inaction.

Men and women generally use the word respect differently.

Most men use respect as something that is earned. Either by being tough, capable, moral, reliable, etc.

For many women, respect is the default setting. You respect someone until they give you cause to not. (Then you can treat them like shit.) For a guy, you dont respect someone as the default setting. You may be fair, or treat them with decency, but not respect.

So in a very real way, women do expect respect without earning it.
