"Looks don't matter" is such a lie, and as other women have pointed out, it's one we have been taught to tell ourselves from a young age. And we do get such contradictory messages too! On one hand, the Chads are always the villains of most romcoms... On another hand, have you met a romantic hero who hasn't been described as dashing, charming and handsome? Bonus points if said romantic hero is also an asshole, which of course he is, because what is healthy conflict even?

So yes, I think this is a lie that gets passed around, but the person saying it often isn't aware of how much of a lie it is.

Different perspective on how "looks don't matter" should be more nuanced:

A man doesn't have to be the most good-looking to be a good match for you. I have been attracted to men who weren't conventionally attractive because they had other virtues. But I never found them ugly. So they weren't exactly my type, but I wasn't disgusted to look at them, and this is as low as my standards have gotten. So looks do matter, you just don't need to be a perfect 10 to be loved.
Looks do matter, it's just that what different people find attractive varies so much (within reason) that in most non-extreme cases, there's bound to be someone who finds you attractive.
Attraction is not only looks-based. There are multiple qualities that a man must have before I even consider him, other than looks. So looks do matter, but if you're a Chad with an awful personality, you might be less attractive overall than an average dude that is funny, charming and kind.

Basically, looks aren't everything, but they sure as fuck matter.

It’s not that looks don’t matter, it’s that looks aren’t the end all/be all of attraction. They’re the threshold to entry, if you will. You must be this attractive for me to consider you at all.

Also, looks can be overridden. I’ve dated guys - hell, even my soon-to-be ex-husband - who weren’t conventionally attractive. But I found them incredibly attractive because of sexual and interpersonal chemistry

I would venture to say that a lot of women don't know that looks matter until they date and find out themselves. Were raised to value romantic value, not looks and sexual attraction. A lot of us trick ourselves into believing that lie that society projects on us. Myself, I always quietly wondered where the hot guys were. I was just dating the average guys around because they had high romantic value. Then Chads started to approach me, and that was it...the vagina tingles were activated.

The problem isn't so much that we were told to "try out the uglies too!" so much as we were also told to "be true to your feelings." Well ugly people give everyone shit feelings (initially), and so if you're too "in tune with your feelings" you're never going to get over that feeling no matter how nice and perfect for you they turn out to be.

Guys are much better at this than girls are, because at least we had the typical masculine defense to that shitty "always be true to your feelings" advice.

They do matter, but only in certain circumstances.

i think what matters is that a man takes good care of his health, dresses in a way that flatters his body, and carries himself with dignity and purpose. one doesn't need to have attractive features per se to be averagely attractive.

i'm (dude here) currently crushing on a babe who looks a bit like a pig. by that i mean that her nose is kind of wide and turns up, her face is round-ish, her eyes are wideset, she's short, and kind of skinny-fat. all of these might be considered unattractive, or even ugly. but, she's also hilarious, kind, has an introspective gaze, intelligent, has glowing skin thanks to a healthy diet and ease around stress, sexy posture because she practices yoga, and her style is just damn creative and beautiful. so, in my mind, those features i described above, which might be considered ugly at first, actually just mesh with the more attractive features i described in the middle of this paragraph to make her even more attractive, in my opinion at least.

i'm sure the same principle applies to men. in fact, a buddy of mine is ogre-like, but takes good care of himself, dresses well, has an amazing and magnetic sense of humor, and is generally a happy and well-adjusted guy, and he's always dating an attractive woman.

i think that's what people mean when they talk about looks being important.
