The evolutionary reason has been cited here, the emotional reason has been cite here, it’s both.

Men want someone who hasn’t had an intimate relationship because he wants to be special to her; her only, and are concerned that someone with a past has already felt the ‘tingles’ and may not have feelings for you that exceed those from before.

Women, on the flip side, are fine with someone with a broken tingle factory because if they win that guy over despite it it reflects positively on them.

Historically, people who thought this way had much better reproductive success; men thinking this way avoided being tricked into raising someone else’s child, and women thinking this way settled down with guys who were having great reproductive success.

Women find interest in people. Men find an interest in things. In that vein, men want "stake" in the women they love. Nothing says you have stake in a woman like 62 dicks before you got there. But honestly, a dude that comes in wanting to be a woman's first love has a giant ego and will probably have issues with seeing women as individuals over a personal possession.

I assume, since I don't speak for women, that "last romance" means she's got the best dude she can net.

Sounds about right. Love is mostly rooted in egoism. Men want to be first because being first to do something (or someone) is seen as an accomplishment that nobody else can claim, and women want to be someone’s last because to them it means they were worth putting off the rest of the female population for. Egoism.

Chalk this up to yet more evidence that queers have the most insight re: the gender wars. Strictly hetero men and women can only ever glimpse it from one angle.

I won't speak to what women want, since to me, that's like trying to describe what the weather will be a week from now. It's like quantum mechanics -- more a vague probability field that occasionally breaks all previously known laws, rather than an actual, concrete thing.

As for what men want, sure. Sexual jealousy exists in most primates (yes, including bonobos). People here often mistake jealousy for a rational stance which can be "debated" as such. It isn't, and can't. It's much more like physical attraction, kinks, or other things having to do with the experience of sexuality. Innate, involuntary, and no less overpowering for being so.

Evolutionarily, it makes sense. If Billygar the paleolithic tribesman is cool with Chadgar being the first to fuck every woman in a 10 mile radius, then Billygar's genes are probably doomed. Not only because Chad is likely to impregnate and monopolize their wombs for a 9 month period, but because Billygar will end up picking up the tab after Chadgar boots her out of his cave to make room for the next fresh puss puss in line.

This idea that being the first to break open the seal on a woman means nothing is an aberration; it could only have arisen in an era of widespread birth control. Ie, the past 60 years. You aren't going to see male feelings on this topic change any time soon, although attitudes have certainly shifted -- particularly among top men who benefit from the cock carousel, and by extension, the attitudes of the sheep as well.

Nevertheless, it takes a while for humanity's internal wiring to adjust to any revolutionary state of affairs, the sexual revolution being no exception.

I think pretty much any statement that includes the word "always" and doesn't pertain to exact science is flagrantly wrong—which is what I like about exact science, it's nice and simple and the word for "99.999% true" is "false".

There was by the way a cross-cultural study posted here a while back about how much was cared about the virginity of one's opposite sex lover. The interesting thing was tht in Sweden and China females cared more about male virginity than in reverse, but in Sweden they cared very little about virginity in general, and in China they cared a lot—there was sadly no way to indicate that one viewed nonvriginity as a plus, "I don't care at all" was the lowest it went; there should be a negative option of course.

Sounds dated, men just don't like women deploying dual mating strategies, men prefer women who date the same type of men they later marry, I wouldn't be surprised that women go for the same in men, it just isn't talked about that often.
