I think one thing that is really interesting is that the most progress is being made in robotics on tasks that no one wants to do, or that often involve more difficulty/danger than is worth the benefit. I don't think sexbots will be physical robots, too expensive and static. Instead it'll be a combination of VR along with a gyroscopic fixed position device that will allow the physical sensations of multiple positions (ie you could attach it to the bed and it'll shift based on your movements and positioning). You won't be able to really tell the difference from the real thing. It'll be much cheaper (sub $1000) and is likely something we could produce with today's technology, honestly I literally just sketched out the mechanical design for such a system, I was surprised at how simple it would be to produce. The difficult part which we don't have yet is sync'ing the physical and virtual together, but I give it 5 years.

If you design a sexbot with the ability to make its pussy tighter or massage your dick while you're fucking it, then you also risk it crushing your dick in the event of a glitch. Whose gonna bug test that? Sure you could do manual tightening, but there will be guys out there who want to push the envelope and make it more automated (which means more moving parts). Sure you could limit it to a fancy sex doll, but we already have those. I imagine such a thing would be paraded in the media to highlight the 'dangers' of such toys, like a fembot accidentally killing someone's dog.
Springboarding from my first point, more complexity means more lifelike functions. If you give it the ability to walk around and clean for you, then you're opening the door for clever coders and programmers to add or change functions altogether, like being able to fight or use weaponry. Guys are going to tinker, that's just how it is. A man with means and time could conceivably create an army of fembots more durable than any man. One could design a script of some sort that would give him control over other fembots. Imagine a setup where the fembot mimics the movements of its owner, who can then prance around committing crimes. No way the establishment would be comfortable with that. Sure you can design safeguards, but there are always methods around that. They would never put that kind of power in the hands of the common man.

And don't even get me started on the can of worms you open if you even think of putting a quantum computer in these things where they actually learn. The civil rights debate that would ensue would effectively end those shenanigans. The level of sophistication required for a truly workable sexbot would require DoD level funding and research, which is unlikely to make its way into our hands.

I tend to agree with the sentiment of /u/sardinemanR in that VR sex simulations (and its peripherals) are far easier to develop, while simultaneously being faster to produce in the near-term. Logically, bots are the end-game, but only in a truly free market. There are a number of controls (both technological and otherwise) preventing us from truly pioneering a refined, lifelike fembot.
