I agree with you! My husband thought it was crazy that I didn't want to move in until we were engaged (I told him this when we first started dating). He said that it's the norm to move in together first and then get married. I told him that in the Asian community, it's not the norm and I stand by my values.

A year later, he told me that he wanted to get married, even before living together. He said that he always thought you needed to live together before marriage because you need to test compatibility and that it's just what everyone does, so he never questioned it. He even said that he used to see marriage as just a piece of paper. But he said that after being with me, he understood why people get married. He said that he wanted to be with me forever. He wanted to marry me.

Yes, it's very common here in Canada to move in before marriage, but I know so many women who have been waiting years for a proposal, or even to get married because they've been engaged for so long. They'll nag their boyfriends to propose and ask why he hasn't yet even though it's been 7 years and they have a mortgage together, a dog, even a baby, and the man just doesn't want to because he's already comfortable. FDS teaches women not to move in until an engagement in order to avoid that kind of situation.
