Getting emotionally attached early on is a huge issue for me in dating, it has often resulted in me getting led on and condoning awful behaviour. I (24) have been seeing a guy (35) who seemed very into me in the beginning, with constant texts, calls and talking about the future. Despite having a connection in person he became really inconsistent with communication, to the point where he wouldn’t text for a while and would promise that he would call but wouldn’t, all the while saying how much he liked me. It’s been bothering me way too much, and despite knowing that I’m being led on, I keep making excuses for him and wanting to hear from him, it feels like an emotional rollercoaster.

How do I protect myself from this in the future and stop letting the actions of men control my emotions like this? I would appreciate some tips to keep myself guarded. Thanks!

Edit: thank you so much for the advice! This has really opened my eyes to the red flags that I have missed, and I realise that I’m not in the right mindset to be dating yet as I’m not yet secure in myself. I will re-read these answers if I start second guessing myself!
