This was not just in the US Army, the British Army also knew about it and although I can't say they asked soldiers to turn a blind eye there were always plenty of stories about it happening

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points52 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Canada too

[+]SuperSig11 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

I used to listen to them beat the detainees that we turned over to them on our FOB then the government turns around and says "we would never turn over a detainee if we knew they would be abused" um... excuse me? If that's the case my whole deployment must have been a fucking hallucination. We were told if we caused trouble and reported the child abuse we would end up with targets on our back. We used to take these guys out on our patrols so thinking one of those fucking animals would blue on blue us was completely believable.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They were extremely crooked, many got training just to go report back to the Taliban.

[+]SuperSig11 points 8 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't know if you were there or not but these "men" in most cases were barely short of animals. I don't really know how else to explain it. These people would eat their own young if the mood suited them. Many were good people and genuinely wanted good things for their country but God damn the bad ones were fucking evil. Imagine your worst nightmare and understand that given time these guys could find a way to be worse.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was there in 2010 and worked/patrolled with the AUP, out of all the ones we’ve worked with I trusted maybe two because their hatred of the Taliban was believable and they actually stuck around. Still would never let my guard down. Even our terp turned out to be a scumbag.

[–]srbsask 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Damn right

[–][deleted] 98 points99 points100 points 8 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link

How about blaming Afghanistan for having child sex abuse.

[–]Sanic_The_Sandraker 50 points51 points52 points 8 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

See something, do something.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Only possible if we're actually the ones in charge.

When the British outlawed Sati through out India, they held the right to do that through being the sovereign of the region at the time. They governed society, so their officials held that right.

In Afghanistan we were strictly the allies of the regime we propped up. We don't have the authority to foist our moral standards on them, not matter how disgusting their "cultural" practices really are.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The mission there was to kill terrorists not make them American. They have a culture that is many thousands of years older than the US. So long as they don't support terrorists I don't care what they do. That is their business.

[–]warsie 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And remember the British general who was able to outlaw Sati flat out said he was afraid of this practice as well as other gay shit "corrupting" his soldiers so eben that couldn't be stamped out.

[–]Jesus_marley 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

but sovereign nations do have the authority to withdraw support from nations whose "cultural practices" are in direct violation of basic human rights and dignity.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While this is technically true, in practice national governments send their armed forces where it suits their interests first and foremost.

It's very, very rare to see a country turn down intervention that benefits them in some way on moral grounds, and likewise its similarly rare to see interventions in areas that are perceived to have more risks than benefits.

The moral stances surrounding conflicts tend to get reduced to a simple justification for whatever position they believe benefits them politically.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

What would the west accomplish telling everyone if it's their culture? Islamic countries are pretty weird

[–]HMTheEmperor 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nah, this is particularly Afghan thing.

[–]RonTomJohnson 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, no it isn't. I saw it in Iraq as well.

[–]HMTheEmperor 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, I mean to say Bacha bazi as a societal institution. Of-course this happens the world over - but I'm speaking in a narrower sense. But I suppose I'm being pedantic.

[–]Sanic_The_Sandraker 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Invest in these nations through education of the young and as current generations who perpetuated this culture die off the generation following them will have been brought up knowing right from wrong in accordance with Western morals.

[–]Achack 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Invest in these nations

That's literally the first and currently most important point where there is a huge issue.

To invest is to give money or something else of value to them with the expectation that it will be used as intended. There are mountains of evidence to show that this does not happen and that the most powerful entity will use the money however they see fit because being the most powerful entity means they have no interest in change.

That means we need to use some form of control in order to protect this investment but obviously that opens up the doors to hugely controversial question.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points37 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Except we're not going to invest in Afghanistan and I don't think Afghanistan wants to change, the middle east literally went back in time to full islam in recent years. Very religious country compared to a few decades before.

[–]Ak_publius 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Afghanistan isn't the middle east but I get what you mean.

[–]Oblivious_Indian_Guy 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Afganistan is very much in the middle East.

[–]TheLizardKing89 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

No it isn't. It's in Central Asia.

[–]DarthCallidous 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Are we really being this pedantic? Pakistan isn't in the middle east either, but it's generally included when you talk about the middle east. Just like hawaii is included in north america, when it's part of oceania.

[–]srbsask 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

South West Asia if the SWASM is to be believed ;)

[–]Magnum007 -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]ProbablyNotYourSon -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don’t know about that mate. to the western powers, Afghanistan=Middle East

[–]upinthecloudz 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's how we got here in the first place.

Only it wasn't western secular democracies funding the education of the young. It was Saudi wahhabi extremists funding a new ideology.

Older generations do not believe in Jihad the way the young do, specifically because of this.

[–]phyllinmeself -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Why do western morals have to be something the entire world follows?

[–]jeegte12 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

because the West is one of the places that knows not to rape little boys. are you saying there's a subjective argument to be made there? perhaps the West is missing a critical moral juncture that actually demonstrates that pederasty is a good thing for the world?

[–]ballotechnic 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, normally I support cultural sovereignty, but raping kids is over a line. I'm pretty comfortable with folks interfering. I think framing it as if it's some sort of western cultural oppression when it's not solely a western ideal btw, is disingenuous.

[+]phyllinmeself -8 points-7 points-6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I wasn't implying anything. Also, the west is not perfect; have you not ever seen the straight white male politicians who do the exact same sick shit? It's gross, yes, deplorable, yes, but that does not mean people can just go forcing western ideals on other countries just bc we think we're right and they're wrong

[–]Dancing_Anatolia 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The fact that you used the words "sick" and "deplorable" means that we know it's wrong if someone does it over here. It's a question of the ages, but it's one worth asking: how far do you have to be pushed to admit that there are some parts of 'culture' too vile and beast-like to be tolerated?

[–]jeegte12 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

each generation gets their morals from the current and previous generation, not fucking money. you can't just throw money at them.

[–]AlcoholicAsianJesus 96 points97 points98 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

...this is an excerpt from the Wikipedia article on Bacha bazi.

In a 2013 Vice Media, Inc. documentary titled "This Is What Winning Looks Like", British independent film-maker Ben Anderson describes the systematic kidnapping, sexual enslavement and murder of young men and boys by local security forces in the Afghan city of Sangin. The film depicts several scenes of Anderson along with American military personal describing how difficult it is to work with the Afghan police considering the blatant molestation and rape of local youth. The documentary also contains footage of an American military advisor confronting the then-acting Police Chief on the abuse after a young boy is shot in the leg after trying to escape a police barrack. When the Marine suggests that the barracks be searched for children, and that any policeman found to be engaged in pedophilia be arrested and jailed, the high-ranking officer insists what occurs between the security forces and the boys is consensual, saying "[the boys] like being there and giving their asses at night." He went on to claim that this practice was historic and necessary. "If [my commanders] don't fuck the asses of those boys, what should they fuck? The pussies of their own Grandmothers?"

[–]arnoldwhat 75 points76 points77 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Here is a novel solution, why don't they just fuck each other? Then they wont have to worry about raping little boys and their own grandmothers. Jesus christ.

[–]jeegte12 32 points33 points34 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

because fucking other men is gay, fucking little boys isn't

Bacha bazi

Bacha bāzī (Dari: بچه بازی‎‎, literally "boy play"; from بچه bacha, "child", and بازی bāzī, "game") is a slang term in Afghanistan for a wide variety of activities involving sexual relations between older men and younger adolescent men, or boys. The practitioner is commonly called bacha Baz (meaning "boy play" in Dari) or simply BACH. It may include to some extent sexual slavery and child prostitution. Bacha bazi has existed throughout history, and is currently reported in various parts of Afghanistan. Force and coercion are common, and security officials state they are unable to end such practices because many of the men involved in bacha bazi-related activities are powerful and well-armed warlords.

He's got a point. I wouldn't want to have to bring my grandmother to war.

[–]turbulance4 35 points36 points37 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was in Afghanistan, for a little over 6 months. It was obvious that sexual abuse (boy, girl, child, and adult) was a systemic and rampant problem in their culture. However I was never told to turn a blind eye, nor instructed to act any differently if the victim was male or female.

That been said, I suppose one could say I did "turn a blind eye" of sorts. Not that I pretended it didn't exist, but there was literally nothing I could do about it.

[–]LongTrang117 63 points64 points65 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is old news to anybody who was over there or has friends/family who have served over there.

[–][deleted] 56 points57 points58 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And we wonder why boys in that culture grow up into fucked up adults.

[–]jeegte12 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nobody who's paid any attention wonders that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's a lot of people who willfully avoid paying attention to the plight of boys and men.

[–]J-Unleashed 23 points24 points25 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Former U.S. Army Soldier here.

I was served in Iraq (08-09) and Afghanistan (10-11).

If you only knew the scandals covered up by units in regards to sexual abuse in boys.

When I was in Afghanistan, an E-6 from the our brother company was found doing some sick shit to an Afghan boy. The incident was completely swept under the rug, and never reported formally other than word of mouth.

He ended up being transferred to my company, but it didn't take long for us to find out why. He was caught trying something again not long after, and again swept under the rug.

Hell, during my first deployment, we had to provide a patrol element for security of a circumcision ceremony. So, I guess it isn't all that surprising now that I think about it.

[–]HMTheEmperor 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What is an E6 from a brother company?

[–]applefrank 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a senior enlisted non-comissioned officer from a group of soldiers that worked closely with the OP's group of soldiers. E-6 can carry a good bit of weight amoung the enlisted depending on the branch of service, but in all services E-6 are often placed in a supervisor role.

[–]jeegte12 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

did you report anything when you had the chance?

[–]J-Unleashed 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nope, for a few reasons.

I wasn't looking to deal with anyone else's bullshit. I had enough of the war criminals from within our ranks, and I had enough of Afghanistan, NCOs, stupid Soldiers brown nosing to get promoted, so no. I did not

The E5 from my company who reported him was instructed not to mention anything either.

I wish more taxpayers were aware of the war criminals their tax dollars feed. But then again, people like me who reached a high level of apathy and just want to get out, likely contributed to this.

And personally, I'm not even sure this was the worst thing one of our guys did.

[–]jeegte12 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i totally respect that, i was just curious, i definitely don't think it was your moral responsibility to stick your nose in.

[–]ballotechnic 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Is there any kind of in-house justice? Something that would give a would-be** predator pause?

[–]J-Unleashed 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I was located at a different JCOP than he was. I heard a rumors of some justice, but never confirmed it. Every platoon had Soldiers fight under their respective closed door policies. I only talked to the fucker when I had to verify his sensitive items and weapons.

Hell, he managed to deadline a goddamn shipping container. Deadline a shipping container, yes you read that correctly. So, in addition to being a pedophile, he is ironically stupid.

[–]ballotechnic 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What is 'deadlining'?

[–]J-Unleashed 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Basically, where you make military equipment unusable. Drilling a hole into the wall of a shipping container just to hang some stupid picture, apparently makes the shipping container useless. Shipping containers cannot have holes in them because they contain highly sensitive equipment, and thus the equipment is not secure.

Hope that clarified everything.

[–]ballotechnic 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yikes. Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.

[–]wolf6152ag 21 points22 points23 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]NrthnMonkey 18 points19 points20 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I cannot remember which because there have been a few, but one Ask Reddit thread where people who served in Afghanistan and Iraq were posting experiences, this came up.a.lot

[–]adamdavid85 68 points69 points70 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My comment is nested in there about how the justifications for continuing the practice are largely made by adult men who were themselves subjected to it are very similar to American men with regard to circumcision. I’m sure you can all anticipate the reaction.

[–]JohnnySkidmarx 32 points33 points34 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Thanks, I had no idea

[–]n_surf 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Not English native, what do you mean with pitcher?

[–]wallyroos 26 points27 points28 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

In baseball you have a pitcher who throws the ball and a catcher who catches it. In this context the catcher is catching penis in the anus

[–]n_surf 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Forgive me but I don't understand what you mean with the red hands then :-(

[–]wallyroos 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It was a way of identification of who you would pitch to.

[–]Incident-Pit 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was henna, and it’s a cure all in their culture. It has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

And, yet, it does based on how it was used.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Perhaps it is used as suggested, but the majority of Afghans I’ve encountered with red fingers (henna applied to their skin/nails), have done so for the perceived medical benefits. Source: personal experience, I deployed three times to Afghanistan, my second deployment was as a Kandak Medical advisor- I worked with the Afghans for 8-12 hours a day for 7 months.

[–]Sloth_Hasselhoff 56 points57 points58 points 8 years ago (57 children) | Copy Link

This is why people shouldn't be allowed to migrate into western nations from areas of the world with cultures that are barbaric and evil. Not all cultures are beautiful or equal.

[–]rocelot7 35 points36 points37 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's why mass immigration is bad. I have a friend whom parent immigrated from Iran and they see the rise of Islam in Europe in terrifying. Why? Because one of the main reason they moved was to get away from that culture. Sadly this isn't the "silent majority" of Muslims, they're a very vocal but very small minority.

[–]Coldbeam 24 points25 points26 points 8 years ago (43 children) | Copy Link

If they want to leave that culture behind, and embrace western values I'm fine with them.

[–]superhobo666 27 points28 points29 points 8 years ago (39 children) | Copy Link

Problem is many of them aren't doing that, they're bringing their cultures with them and attacking us and calling us racists if we don't like the negative aspects they bring with them.

Uh what?

Study after study has shown Muslim Americans, for example, being significantly more liberal than their peers and more liberal than even the general US population. They bring their culture, sure, but when it makes contact with Western culture it mutates into something different.

Take your bigotry elsewhere.

While I am not doubting your information, you can't dismiss his statement either, especially when you have evidence like this to support his claim. Calling it "bigotry" is just indulging in virtue signaling to diffuse the facts behind his statement.

[–]UseCaseX 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Do you have any data?

[–]kragshot 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is an analysis from back in 2012 about the subject. While I do find Scheuer's overall politics more than a little questionable, I can't disagree with his analysis as it pretty much describes what is going on:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1INCWzXkpgs

Let's move forward a bit and see what has happened since in regards to how well Islamic fundamentalism would mesh in a democratic environment:

https://www.npr.org/2017/06/20/533617455/history-of-our-time-how-americans-view-islam

This is an article with quotes directly from the head of The American Islamic Forum For Democracy supporting my viewpoint. Furthermore, President Zuhdi Jasser almost quotes my above statement:

“And I will tell you, there is ignorance in thinking that it’s just ISIS,” Jasser continued, arguing that the security threat is not limited to Islamic extremists, but also includes foreign intelligence operatives."

“I guarantee to you [that] embedded in the refugees are intelligence operatives of [the] Assad regime, of Russia, of many operatives - Iran - that are not always just Muslim, that could include non-Muslims that we aren’t vetting...”

https://www.cnsnews.com/blog/jose-r-gonzalez/head-american-islamic-forum-democracy-we-need-put-pause-all-immigration

On top of the issues of radical Islamic organizations attempting to insert destabilizing elements into groups of refugees, you also have to worry about run of the mill Islamic followers that have no desire to become part of the country where they are immigrating toward. Heck...here's a staunch Islamist pretty much admitting it as he was attempting to immigrate to Denmark:

https://www.thelocal.dk/20151027/denmark-denies-citizenship-to-known-islamist

The point here is that while many people seeking refuge coming from Islamic regimes are genuinely seeking new lives in democratic western countries, there are radical Islamic groups that are attempting to take advantage of this in order to further their own goals. Being wary about the goals of those radical groups and being critical about immigration policies in light of this very real threat is not congruent with being a racist or racism in general.

Of course I can. If you can't find data that clearly justify your position and make a broad generalize statement... you're a bigot. For example, you just posted a random unidentified picture with no context proves that has some angry looking brown men as "evidence" of something. It isn't, it's just fear mongering. This is why I think you are a bigot.

The Quran is literally one part of the Islamic faith. Is it important? Sure. But does it really accurately describe how practicing Muslims express their faith? No. That's why you can see drastic differences in How Islam is practiced in the west, in the Middle East, in Africa etc. Simply saying "look at the Quran!" Is a lot like saying "read the Old Testament" without any reference to the New Testament, the reformation etc. etc.

[–]yetanotherAZN 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

A truly devout Muslim follows the Quran, or at least tries his best to. It's the central authority, the same way the Bible is to Christians. The drastic differences in practice is caused by ignorance of the actual text.

And on the "expressing their faith" point. I don't understand how there can be such a large discrepancy within the same faith, especially if one camp is full peace loving tree huggers and the other west hating, violence driven savages.

You're going to bring up the differences within Christianity, but they aren't valid. Christianity's central authority is the Bible, which includes both testaments. There's no, "sure, the Bible's important, but does it accurately describe how they express their faith?" Because the answer is yes, and this should always be the case. Westboro Baptists are always condemned by Christians, but it's not because they're hateful. It's because they're just wrong. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God hates fags or wants to destroy them. The same can't be said for Muslims. Homosexuality is explicitly condemned as vile, and also punishable by death. If a Muslim doesn't kill his local gays, how can he call himself a Muslim?

https://www.thereligionofpeace.com/pages/quran/homosexuality.aspx

This is still the case in all Muslim lead countries.

So what gives? Can moderate Muslims even exist? The answer is no, because Islam is a rigid religion of do's or don'ts or else.

Muslim terrorists, no matter how often they're condemned by "moderates," are the most devout Muslims, and they're the only ones who properly follow Islamic doctrine.

First, off...you don't know shit about me. But if you want to get your jollies off of calling random people on the internet bigots, then have fun, sunshine. I don't have to prove shit to you, berk. But that's what SJWs do and they aren't welcome in these parts, so you might want to rethink your presence in our sub.

Next, how about you just google the phrase "We don't want democracy, we want Islam," and see how much info on that comes up. This is what is happening in many countries where you have a large influx of Islamic immigrants and refugees. What is going on is that in the midst of those "rank and file" people that are genuinely looking to get out of their home countries and find a better and more peaceful life in the Western world for themselves and their families, subversive agitators are being inserted into those groups of refugees with an agenda of destabilization. If you bothered to do some real research, you would find that such tactics are commonplace and have been happening for decades.

Not every person that is critical of some of the behavior of Islamic immigrants and refugees is a bigot...but to accept that as a possibility would go against your narrative, right?

(Just in case you were wondering, this is your big chance to prove me wrong and show me that you can think beyond the typical SJW talking points and consider a point of view beyond what you are used to.)

[+]OscarThePitBull -9 points-8 points-7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'd prefer not to google anything. If you want to make a point, make it and cite your sources. It isn't my job to make your argument for you or go on hunts for information on google for whatever half formed idea you have.

I'm not sure what an SJW is and I don't really care. All I pointed out was, I provide data and justifications for my position. You word vomit random nonsense and then tell me to "google it" as if that somehow means something.

At this point I don't particularly care what you think or your arguments anymore.

Asylum seekers are totally fine and should be welcomed. Which celebrating your own culture and having that throughout a community is fine, its when people despise the society they live in and shun all who are not of that culture, that issues arise and violence takes place.

[–]OscarThePitBull 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There is a middle ground where western culture adapts to them as they adapt to it. As has happened with every single ethnic group that migrated to the US. Most Muslims in the US tend to become much more liberal than their counterparts in South Asia, Middle East etc. but they don't "leave" anything behind. It just adapts.

I mean the state structure was a modern, post-westphalian state. Also, 'ethical legal systems' and 'basic morality' are culturally relative, it's impossible to be 'behind' in those.

[–]DMCA_OVERLOAD 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

It's got nothing to do with their gender! The decision was made by the highest levels of theater command because if we had tried to prosecute literally every member of the senior military staff and government who were guilty of this we would have destroyed our military alliance which was crucial for mission success in the region. I.E. more Americans would have died, more civilians would have died, our counter-terrorism efforts would have been hamstrung because the locals would not provide us with intel or militia to patrol and hold our AO, their weak government never would have had the training or resolve to resist enemy forces' encroachment and in the end everything we had built there would have collapsed. This was about preserving lives and protecting American interests, nothing more. What a lot of Westerners don't seem to understand is that this is an indelible part of their culture, not something that can just be excised by prosecuting couple of high profile offenders. The fact that we see it as an offense is offensive to most Afghans.

The Ancient Greeks were well-known to be terrible. These are the people who would throw babies off a cliff-side as a form of Classical eugenics, and who would banish people from their city for literally any reason, if enough people agreed to. What we learned from the Greeks was logic and mathematics. If we maintained their outlook on sex with children, we'd still have sex with children today.

Ostracism

Ostracism (Greek: ὀστρακισμός, ostrakismos) was a procedure under the Athenian democracy in which any citizen could be expelled from the city-state of Athens for ten years. While some instances clearly expressed popular anger at the citizen, ostracism was often used preemptively. It was used as a way of neutralizing someone thought to be a threat to the state or potential tyrant. It has been called an "honourable exile" by scholar P. J. Rhodes.

This cultural action of chai boys etc was occurring in that region of the world (southern eurasia) before Islam was there. It's not inherently Islamic to gave the chai boy culture, in the same way that its not inherently Chrisrian to have Halloween or Walpurgis Night celebrations as those celebrations predate Christianity

Edit: also Bacha Bazi is more than assrape.

Edit 2: Also, AFAIK this cultural tradition seems to have largely died out in the rest of central and southern eurasia. For example, bordering Iran which is basically the same people/civilization (Pashtun Afghanis are Iranian speaking peoples, only noticeably different thab Farsi), only Shia doesn't exactly have this giant habit.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FOOD_ 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ah okay. So obvious still a culture thing, just not specifically because of the religion. I am curious what brought it up throughout their history then.

And also, thank you for the mini history lesson!

[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My best guess is it's due to the cultural segregation of sexes in those countries (Purdah), which again predates Islam. Note for example, Malaysia/Indonesia, as well as "European" Islamic groups like Albanians and Kazan Tatars don't have the same sort of traditions.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Yes. We were there we saw evil and we did nothing. Those little boys are people to. And they will grow up to be the men of the nation. If we had made a firm stance on stopping this back around 9 11 those boys would be young adults now. And they would support us for protecting them.

[–]DMCA_OVERLOAD -4 points-3 points-2 points 8 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

You're joking, right? pleasetellmeyou'rejoking

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Your saying your satisfied with children getting raped as the lesser of 2 evils?

[–]DMCA_OVERLOAD 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

The alternative scenario is our pressing this issue would be seen as a betrayal. The military would have refused to cooperate with our operations and a shit load more people would have died because of that. And their culture still wouldn't have changed and they would continue on raping little boys all day long without us having the authority to dictate to a sovereign nation what is and is not permissible and practically enforceable for their weak, under-resourced, fledgling government. Are you that miopic that you can't see the greater implications?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I'm saying if they want to fight for the ability to rape children I'm willing to kill them. We've been in a BS half war for years now. Lets just get it over with clean out anyone who is evil including rapist and be done with it.

[–]chocoboat 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's not the job of the US military to give their lives to police sex crimes in backwards countries.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why are we there if not to protect people

[–]OscarThePitBull 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh fuck off with your "protect people" nonsense you jack off. You literally just called for murdering everyone in their country.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I said murder all of them, if thats what it takes. Protect the innocent, kill the terrorist, rapist ect.

[–]chocoboat 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We shouldn't be there. We're not going to fix a violent backwards country with bombs and bullets.

[–]MuricanTauri1776 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

We should not have ignored it. As some British military General (I think, cannot remember the name said on the historical Indian practice of burning the widow on the husband's funeral pyre "That is your custom, however it is british custom to hang murderers". We should have enforced that, and for lack of a better word, 'civilized them'. This is literally ignoring the most heinous of crimes for the sake of diplomacy. I would think that they would be better than to ignore such barbaric crimes en masse.

[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So genocide or mass murder isnt worse? And the difference is this is a sovereign state, not a puppet or colony. So no you can't civilize people. In general its a bad idea

[–]MuricanTauri1776 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Any nation that legalizes CHILD RAPE, de facto or de jure, does not deserve to be independent, let alone Sovereign, or maybe even to have the weapon restrictions in effect in wars against them, or in them. If pedophilia is so rampant, yes, they certainly need to be civilized.

[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

LOL, white people fucking up countries again.

Spoiler: those countries don't consider it to be "rape" so from their perspective you're some.bitthurt westerner wrecking cultures.

[–]MuricanTauri1776 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You strike me as the same type of person that whines about 'western rape culture', yet when institutionalized, unpunished CHILD RAPE happens abroad, in a country where we went in and could have at least TRIED TO stop it, you then say 'according to the rapists, they do not consider it rape, so they should go free?' Think about how you would feel on the opposite end of that stick, 'oh so-and-so raped you, but since he/she (the rapist) did not consider it rape, they are free to go'. Not too pleased, I imagine. Some cultures NEED to be changed BECAUSE OF EXACTLY THIS SORT OF WIDESPREAD HEINOUS CRIME GOING UNPUNISHED. So I again say, YES THEY DO NEED SOME CIVILIZING. CHILD RAPE cannot be ignored because of COMMIE SJW talking points of 'muh whitey' & 'muh colonialism'.

[–]warsie -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If the Americans didn't invade Afghanistan, there wouldn't be child rape nearly to this level. The Taliban flat out banned rhis sort of practice and enforced it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We can't change the past.

[–]nothingbutinsults 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck their culture and kill the officers.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FOOD_ 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are unfortunately correct in this situation. This happens all to often, the American way. It's when Americans want all these societies to be exactly like us, even though they have their own culture that has been around much longer. We are the civilized ones here, so everybody else should be exactly like us and we should have to change all these countries so they can be perfect like is.

I'm not saying child molestation and rape is okay in any form, but they do have a different culture, it's not like they started doing this all of a sudden when US troops showed up on their dirt, this has been going on for centuries! It's not like we are gonna get there and just realize that their culture is wrong and morally fucked just because they have a nother countries army there that think they are better than them.

We can't make everywhere "America" even if we want to. We can do our best to show them how wrong and disgusting it truly is, but we aren't just going to change their culture because we don't like it.

[–]chocoboat -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What the fuck were we supposed to do?

Leave the country and never come back. Of course, the troops who were deployed there and having to deal with this shit aren't the ones who get to make that decision.

[–]Greg_W_Allan -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Under the Taliban the practise had been virtually wiped out. It was western intervention that enabled it's re-establishment.

[–]JohnnySkidmarx -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A little of both. Not purposely being a dick a few times, just telling people things that “hurt their feelings”. Mods banned me.

[+]mwobuddy -13 points-12 points-11 points 8 years ago (35 children) | Copy Link

If you've read the stories, you know this is what child rape really looks like. Instead of the usual parade of hot teachers fucking students who are horny, its unwilling boys being force fucked.

[–]kartu3 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link

Polanski's 13 years old victim was willing according to the police report.
Elaborate, how it wasn't a rape.

And while we are at it:

On average, girls begin puberty around ages 10–11 and end puberty around 15-17; boys begin around ages 11–12 and end around 16-17.

[+]mwobuddy -8 points-7 points-6 points 8 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link

If you marry a 13 year old in many U.S. states, age of consent no longer applies. The term teenager and adolescent both were invented in 1900's.

[–]Endless_Summer 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (32 children) | Copy Link

Did you just use the "you can't rape your wife" defense?

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FOOD_ 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link

I think he was leaning more towards statutory rape, so regardless, if their underage it's rape, even with consent. But I'm not sure?

[–]Endless_Summer 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

u/mwobuddy unfortunately doesn't understand that consent is strictly a legal term, in that there's literally no way a minor can consent to have sex with an adult, even if willingly. Rape is rape is rape, unless you're ignorant beyond education.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FOOD_ 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Oh I definitely agree with you, I was just stating what I think the other guy meant, but hopefully he'll reply so we do know.

[–]Endless_Summer -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Oh, he'll reply. He's a notorious narcissist who can't help himself.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FOOD_ 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Ah, I'll assume you've run in to him before then.

[–]Endless_Summer 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, any time there's a thread about child rape or pedophilia u/mwobuddy is there to defend it.

[–]warsie 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Legal fictions =/= reality

[–]mwobuddy 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Their arguments run afoul of the notion that if we removed the laws on rape tomorrow, then no one could be raped.

Because as they said " unfortunately doesn't understand that consent is strictly a legal term".

You can't make this shit up lol. They literally think that only the law determines when a person is consenting or not, thus if the government fell apart tomorrow, mass rapes would be 'just sex' because there's no law dictating that the lack of consent and the force used in those mass rapes actually makes them... rape.

That's the problem with these people. They don't see how bad their argument is.

[–]warsie 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I see. A problem in some parts of reddit.

[–]mwobuddy 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For further edification:

con·sent kənˈsent/Submit

give permission for something to happen.

permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.

You'll notice that 'legal' or 'law' does not enter into either of these definitions.

Consent definition, to permit, approve, or agree; comply or yield (often followed by to or an infinitive): He consented to the proposal. We asked her permission, and she consented.

[–]Endless_Summer 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

See how that holds up in court, you can't really be that dense.

The lengths people go to to rationalize their pedophilia... Eesh

[–]mwobuddy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Except it isn't. And if you think its based solely on legality, then we could bump age of consent down to 11 tomorrow or up to 22, and suddenly 11 year olds would be easy targets for 'consenting non-rape sex' or 21 year olds would be victims of 'statutory rape', and you'd think those having sex with 21 year olds are disgusting pedophiles.

That's what happens when you appeal to authority.

[–]Endless_Summer 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Except it isn't.

Wrong.

[–]mwobuddy 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think he was leaning more towards statutory rape, so regardless, if their underage it's rape, even with consent. But I'm not sure?

you can still rape your wife no matter her age. age of consent removal in states which allow consensual sex between married partners says that you can't rape your wife via law just because you had sex with her. you have to force her, as in actual rape.

otherwise its legal, consenting sex.

[–]mwobuddy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Im glad you're this triggered. You see, without age of consent in place, a person can still be guilty of rape if they're found to have forced their 'underage' spouse into sex.

Because rape is still a crime even without age of consent laws.

try again.

[–]Endless_Summer 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Im glad you're this triggered.

Said the person who had to reply to each of my comments individually, even though each response is factually false.

[–]mwobuddy -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You are suggesting that without age of consent laws there'd no longer be any form of rape? Really?

[–]Endless_Summer 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nope. Never implied anything of the sort.

[–]mwobuddy -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thats exactly what is implied from your statement that Im making false claim.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also in news, people can fly in things called airplanes.
