So my ex and I have been separated for coming up on 2 years. It's been fairly amicable. We get along for the most part. We both see our kids every day because we live so close together. She's had a boyfriend for at least a year, maybe closer to 18 months. He moved in with her at the end of the year last year. He's a nice enough guy and my daughter likes him. On the other hand, I haven't dated since we separated. I wanted to work on myself and I wasn't in a place where I was ready to bring anyone else into my life. A few months ago I began talking to a woman through a game that I play online and we hit it off. She lives in Europe, so all we've ever done is talk. We talked it over and we decided we want to meet and that I'm going to fly to her country and stay for about a week. There's really no long-term potential due to our circumstances, so this isn't going to be the start of some beautiful love story, and we both know that.

The odd part comes in here. I told my ex that I'm planning this trip in the fall so there's plenty of time to make arrangements for the kids. She was fine with it and seemed to be even a little pleased that I was doing this for me. I mentioned to her that I would be meeting up with someone that I've been talking to while I'm in this trip. She had a couple of obvious questions (how did you meet?, how long have you been talking?), but nothing intrusive. As she's hanging up the phone, I can hear her crying. Later when she texted me asking a question about our daughter, I asked her why she cried. She responded by saying she was "crying about us". I asked her to clarify who "us" was and she confirmed she was talking about her and me. I commented that there hadn't been an "us" in about 4 years. The last 2 years we were still in the same house, she lived downstairs and I lived upstairs. Why tf would she be crying about "us" at this point? She had moved on from the relationship long before we separated and now has a live-in boyfriend. She didn't show that type of emotion when we were still together, so why now? I don't have any delusions that this is a prelude to reconciliation. That ship sailed a long time ago. I know she's not upset because she wants me back, so what is it? Somebody please help me understand this.
