As a childfree woman, when I was dating, men would get BIG mad that I didn't/don't want kids. I didn't know these dudes aside from being matched. So, I'd ask the following, since they were so passionate about my choice : "Why do you want to be a dad" Top answers I've gotten over the years: "It looks fun/ so my legacy lives on/to create someone who's like me/ I want to settle down and have a family (the classic non-answer).
Back when I had a few more fcks to give and felt like wasting my time explaining something to a human brick wall, I'd say "yeah it's a ton of work, and a massive committment and time consuming. It changes everything"
Ladies - it was so easy to tell that they really never thought of any of this - and what's worse, didn't give a flying fck. Why? Not his job, in his eyes.
They want the label and none of the work. An honorary degree. I don't even think most want a partner - how can you be a partner to a woman or see her as one when you barely even see her as a person? By this example alone, it's just so clear - 'have my kids, pay half the bills, do 80% of the work regarding emotional, mental labour, housekeeping, event planning, personal assistant, (free) SW - and whenever I want - but don't forget to coddle me like my mom. Be a perfect mom but don't pay more attention to the kids than me 😡.'

This reminds me of a conversation I had with an ex friend. He is currently seeing a lady that is a flight attendant. They both make good money and she told him she wants to have children ASAP. He told me he is hesitant because of her job because if they have children she won’t be there to do much of the parenting.
I told him since he works from home and have lots of free time in between he could be the primary parent. He got irritated and said "so I should be changing diapers and all while she flies around the world" and just then it hit me, this asshole doesn’t want to be a Dad, he wants to be a sperm donor with Kodak moment while his bangmaid takes care of the household. I told him there is nothing wrong with doing his fatherly duties and before I became Childfree my bf and I agreed he will be the primary parent because of my job( aviation). My so called friend told me Im lucky to have found my fool( meaning bf is a fool for wanting to take more parenting duties). I blocked and deleted him( ex friend) as I can’t have NVM in my life even as a friend.

Jealousy of a woman living life or motherhood is definitely a huge red flag in a man. My ex used to say jealous things to me after our 2nd baby like " must be nice to just stay home and drink coffee all day, bet all the working women envy you " When I took a boxing class to lose the baby weight he was catty " must be nice to just go to a class during the day " [ he was overweight with tons of free time ]
Mind you , staying home every day = up all night w 2 kids in diapers/ feedings , make breakfast/ feed everybody/ clean kitchen /do 3 loads laundry/ vacuum/ mop/ pay bills/ take care of gardening outside so yard looks nice/ sweep playhouse so no bugs / entertain, read to, soothe babies/ bathe babies/ feed them lunch / feed them dinner ......dinnertime too tired to even hold head up, clean kitchen again ...
Rinse and repeat . If a man does not respect your career or the sacrifice of motherhood , run!!!
Everyone on this sub: read " Price of Motherhood " Florence Crittenden, before you even consider getting pregnant !

Never crossed my mind since I've been single and childfree for years...
However, it boils my blood to see the sheer resentment your ex had for you. Like what do you want b**ch?! He wanted you to be pretty and bangable and hated you for taking steps to do it? Motherhood is the most underappreciated job and you don't get paid for it...only "payment" you got was mediocre dick and a paycheck...NAH! Glad you got out!
Also I'm tentative to recommend that book for my SIL but whenever I bring stuff like this up I'm seen as the crazy feminist who hates men and babies...ugh.

Thanks, good for you for being your own independent person !!! :) I have to ease people into understanding the real sacrifice of being a mother, so many just do it for family pressure / make the man more " involved" ect , takes a looong time to get a breakthrough wout looking like a " hater " .

Even I “didn’t think much” of motherhood myself! So I can imagine the social ignorance women and men go through throughout their lives! Once you become informed it is insane how big of a can of worms gets opened up. Women like you do the goddess’ work by informing the generations of younger women who consider wanting kids! Hats off to you dear!

That includes parenting.

I like to ask men who use that legacy line what their legacy is.
[–]DallasM19FDS Newbie 51 points52 points53 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. Legacy is the impact you had on people and places, the accomplishments made, the marks left on the world - did you make a discovery? What did you contribute? Did you leave this world better than you found it? Were you literally RBG or Rosa Parks?
How narcissistic to believe your mediocre existence is somehow special.
[–]dkwantsdkFDS Newbie 44 points45 points46 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Then they cry that all these little boys are being raised by their mothers. In other words, the mothers built a legacy that men feel they are entitled to simply for being "dad". They want to be the patriarch without doing any work and then blame women for their own absence. Because it's our job (and their children's) to make them feel special!
[–]DallasM19FDS Newbie 33 points34 points35 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Then they cry that all these little boys are being raised by their mothers
Then maybe they should stop doing stuff like leaving their children's mom's for freshly -turned-18 year olds or behaving like 2nd, 3rd, 4th kids to their partner who ends up exhausted and with exasperation says "I'll just do it myself then." I've seen a lot of tiktoks attempting to be like "well women ask for the divorces!!!" Yes... Because we try and try and ask and ask and y'all still do less than the bare minimum. It's sobering when so many women I personally know are like "it is/would be so much easier if it was just me and the kid(s)".
the mothers built a legacy that men feel they are entitled to simply for being "dad".
I love this. This is such a good point. There would be no legacy without us and ejaculation isn't a legacy, it's a very basic bodily function. But seeing as most can't properly wash or wipe, maybe they do see this as an amazing accomplishment. Imaging wanting praise for having an orgasm 🤡.

Same. When I ask guys (tho it’s men I personally know, not ones on dating sites) they only have non-answers for why they want or did have kids. They are just parroting the same generic responses.
Also, “it’s an instinct”. No. You have an instinct to jizz, that’s it. You can’t have a biological drive towards something that only impacts another person’s body.
[–]DallasM19FDS Newbie 70 points71 points72 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Totally. A guy friend I kind of liked once said to me, that he wanted them because "it looks like a lot of fun, I'm basically a forever kid so they'll be my little buddies!" All I heard was "I'm going to be a Kodak dad who regresses into an additional child for my partner, so she has even more work to do LOLZ! Yay! I'm a toys r us kid!" It forever changed the way I saw him. This is also the same guy who isn't over his ex, but is in a new relationship, and told me he can't afford therapy. But you bet he can afford seadoos, a brand new jeep, four wheelers, going out often. Hopefully he knows the expenses kids bring!
Also, “it’s an instinct”.
If it's an instrint for anyone, it's us. It's literally called maternal instinct. And many of us are starting to choose not to give men kids - we see the sht our foresisters are going through, with carrying the load for some loser who can't figure out how to dress or make a super simple meal for a toddler (and then make hilarious tiktoks about it). We just can't trust them - to do their share, to provide, to give a fck.
Their instinct is exactly what you said - to jizz and sew as many oats as possible. Keep your legs closed, boys, no one wants your subpar dna.

I'm in my thirties, and I've seen many divorces (some with kids) because of this exact reason.
Want to know the common denominator in all of them?
The women were the ones driving the relationship forward.
This is why we tell women to be passive but active. You should not be asking men out, begging for engagements, or planning weddings after 6 years of dating. Your partner should be absolutely enthusiastic about next steps together. My divorced peers were with men who just went along for the ride and thought "yeah, well, I guess we've been married for 2 years so sure yeah, everyone asks when we're having kids so I guess let's do it." That is not the man you want children with.

My bf is childfree and never wanted bio kids. I am a single mother. When I tell you he WORKS for his relationship with my son, and with me. He is in it every day doing the work. He is absolutely beyond committed to my kid and making sure he is well cared for and loved. I'm talking infinite patience, on the floor building Legos every day, knows all his favorite foods and cooks them for him, having their own tooth brushing routine and reading bedtime stories, doing literal research on how to build the stuff my son wants to build in Minecraft on my non-custodial days. He does more for my son than I see most biological fathers doing for their kids by a long shot. I think the actual nitty gritty of partnership and co-parenting is what separates the boys from the men, and unfortunately SO many fall short when they are faced with the actual drudgery of being IN it with their wives.

[–]nomaki221FDS Newbie 50 points51 points52 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This is very true and applies to other things in life as well, like just plain old relationships. The man has to want you, all of you. Not just the benefits of having you.
[–]plomerstFDS Newbie 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How do we distinguish men wanting the real me vs the benefits? I don’t do labor/cook etc for men and I am a prude, but I sense their interest in me is like this smitten thing bc of my looks/persona (I’m a bit quirky). Is that the same as actually liking me? I can tell the men that just want sex vs find me interesting.

This is so true. You can't just take a man's word at face value. If he says he wants kids, ask him "what does having a family mean to you?" I wish I had done that with my ex. I would have learned that his master plan for a family consisted of offloading childrearing responsibilities to his mom and his dad/stepmom even though he was constantly blaming his mom for how she fucked up his childhood.
These men aren't thinking about how important the early years are for child development. They aren't thinking about the effort required for prepping healthy meals for kids, changing diapers, setting up play dates with other kids. They aren't thinking about how important parental bonding is. They aren't thinking about how children are people who deserve THE BEST you can possibly give them. Nope. Kids are just accessories to some guys.
[–]dkwantsdkFDS Newbie 30 points31 points32 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
These are the same guys that talk about a woman's age as the primary factor for reproductive success. The number one factor for a healthy pregnancy? A financially and emotionally stable and secure relationship. But to understand that would require not viewing us as broodmares or children as toys. It would require viewing pregnancy and parenting as a lifelong labor of love. To recognize it as WORK and COMMITMENT.

The difference between hv fathers and lv ones is stark. Many of my Uncles are hvm and when I talk with them about their kids, they always tend to have "future plans" in the works, all the time. For example one is already planning the ways he will support his daughter through getting settled and thriving in high school, another one is already planning how to speed up his son's reading comprehension so he's ahead when he gets to the next grade. They talk a lot about their kids. My dad on the other hand couldn't be trusted to bring us to school early. He doesn't know exactly what I do for a living and can't even tell you what I majored in in college. You can absolutely tell the difference between men who planned for families and the ones who just had them for the benefits or just to check another box.

A lot of men just want the image of happily married man and all the benefits of having the woman of the house without even thinking what all those actually entails - they are far more short-sighted than what they portray.
They literally think it is that easy - just get married and things will work out somehow because that's what it has always been for them - not realizing how many sacrifices, blood, sweat and tears are drawn to ensure their spoiled little ass can continue living life comfortably.
The truth is the majority of men nowadays aren't suitable marriage candidate at all - they are too spoiled and pampered to lead a family unit of their own.
[–]fg_hjFDS Newbie[S] 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
I really doubt men have ever been suitable to lead a family unit. The majority have always had abusive attitudes lurking beneath the surface if not expressed directly.
[–]SayNadFDS Disciple 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've known a few, but it is very very rare indeed. Most of the responsible fathers I know grew up already learning responsibilities from young, and know how to endure hardship. They have that training since young but also retain the empathy and compassion of their earlier age.
A somewhat relevant example is How to DAD. I don't know his as a husband but watching how his children interact with him, looks like he is a responsible dad.
But majority of men don't have that training, much less that sense of responsibility. So yeah most of them are unfit to be a parent.
[–]ZurfluFDS Newbie 40 points41 points42 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Most men see a wife/kids as a big shiny toy like a boat or car that they can trade after every promotion. They want to have a better wife and kids than other men, it has nothing to do with being a family.
[–]dkwantsdkFDS Newbie 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It gives them social status and standing with other men. That's their primary motivating factor for "acquiring" women and children.

Ofc being HV doesn’t depend on wanting kids in itself. The comment just goes for people who want kids specifically. It’s a very strong message tho.
The majority of men believe (and may believe very strongly) that they want kids but when it comes to it they don’t.

Yes. And the ones who actively and explicitly regret having kids are the ones who are forced to take on a big part of domestic labor against their will (such as if the mother can’t do it). I think most men would regret having kids if they were forced to do the same amount of labor as women do.

I had been getting pressured from both sides of the family to have a baby. And I really do want a child, I’m fully aware of the commitment, hard work and physical/mental/financial sacrifices that come along with being a mother.
The reason I’m child free atm is because my scrote ex would be a kodak dad, and would put 0% effort in. He once told me he would never prioritize family over work, because his work is more important and gives him a sense of fulfillment. 🤡
My in-laws wouldn’t have been helpful as they live far away and my family lives abroad. I would have been completely alone and isolated. It was just a non-starter.
Lately I’ve been coming out of the fog and realizing how much of a gift my ex gave me by setting me free.

This is absolutely it. I’ve been on the fence about kids and I got a baby animal recently. Watching my fiancé take care of our little creature in such a committed and meaningful way has pushed me deeply into “I think I want kids with this man” territory. He’s so sweet and involved and he’s not even 100% his yet since we are moving in together next year. He’s been going out of his way to help me with chores at my place so my burden is lighter, I’m talking has done all my laundry since July with no plans to stop. He’s a real partner and is likely going to be a great dad.

I’m sorry, but the way a man cares for pets, younger siblings, nieces and nephews, etc will absolutely not be an accurate indicator of how he is as a married parent. Ask me how I know. Not trying to bring you down, I just want you to be aware so that you can prepare.

Hi yes I do think that's a great point and I appreciate you saying it! Part of our discussions around having kids include hiring a night nurse/nanny for the first 3-6 months and also a nanny, potentially live-in, because we're both extremely high earners. We're also discussing moving closer to family, which he was a little resistant to before but is absolutely on board with after the baby animal and seeing how much work is involved (and anticipating it to be much, much worse with an actual infant).
A lot of these are not an option for everyone but watching him process how much stress and how tired we are going to be and actively making plans to deal with it before we are there is giving me a ton of hope. As always, I plan to keep my career and prioritize it in case I'm totally wrong and am blindsided by an unhelpful partner like FDS recommends!
