So through my history of dating and marriages 😬 I have developed a very “no-bullshit” policy when it comes to relationships. No “love-bombing,” no gaslighting, no guilt trips, no half-assed shows of affection, no pressuring for sex, etc, I could go on and on. My list of “absolutely nots” is long, and valid. I honestly didn’t know how valid they were, and questioned whether I had become calloused or broken or something before I found FDS. Now I know I’ve been right for a while. Working on myself like hell and I’m having a blast just...finally being single and unconcerned about the details of my next potential relationship.

I have a couple of friends who are in the dating pool. When we have girl talk and they talk about their current prospects, sometimes they gush over things that I not only find unimpressive (like “he remembered my order at *random fast food place *😍”) but sometimes relatively concerning (like “he’s pouting because I came with you guys awwww”). I try to be a supportive friend but there are times I just can’t keep my mouth shut. And if I voice my actual opinion they think I’m just salty because I’m single.

A few years ago (after my first divorce) a friend of mine met a guy on the internet and started talking about marrying him. I told her that sounded like a terrible idea, as they had never met in person or physically been in each other’s lives at all. When I found out he was coming to visit I just knew, and I said “please don’t marry him.” The day she eloped she called and asked me to come be a witness (which I agreed to) and later another friend told me she hadn’t wanted to invite me because I didn’t agree with her choice, but she figured I just didn’t want her to get married because I was salty over my divorce and I just wanted her to be alone like me. After that I stopped really viewing her as a friend. Like wtf?

I wholeheartedly believe my intentions are good, and I’ve given this a lot of thought. I never want to hold my friends back from having quality relationships. But when I think they’re settling, or overlooking red flags, or generally doing dumb shit, I say something, but it’s usually taken as me having a bad outlook on love because of my history. Does anyone else have this problem? Should I just always shut up and smile and say “aww that’s great!”?
