Unconditional love is a pernicious myth, and a Bad Thing. I am sick of seeing this idiotic notion touted as an unquestioned good on multiple subs. Anyone who believes s/he "should" love unconditionally is a doormat/walking disaster waiting to be used by the monsters that walk among us , and parents who believe they "should" love their children unconditionally are a menace to everyone around them : How many times have I read over the last few decades about parents who felt obligated to help their Li'l Raping and Murdering Sociopath evade the police or even help them flee the country-?

There is no way this is the original saying. This is most likely the original:

"Only women, children and dogs love unconditionally."

Think about it: What is the one big stereotype about dogs, in particular? They they are loved unconditionally, or that they love unconditionally? Dogs are known for their slavish devotion and obedience to their owners, even when abused (ie. unconditional love), and that's the reason dogs are the favourite animal of humankind (ie. conditional love).

Children are also known for how loving they are (sadly, parents don't always feel the same way) and will stay attached to their parents even when their parents are abusive. Even when it comes to parental unconditional love, which parents are we referring to? Mothers, not fathers. "A mother's unconditional love." There are unloving and abusive mothers, of course, but the reason the stereotype favours women is because of countless generations, worldwide, observing the general pattern of mothers being far more devoted to and self-sacrificing (including of their own lives) for their children than fathers are.

And it's women who keep loving and believing in the men who ignore, mistreat and abuse them, right up until their own murders by those men.

Women and children are being compared to dogs in how much love they give, even when mistreated. It's a harsh comparison drawing attention to a harsh truth.

It's so clear that this saying was warped by by resentful misogynists, who heard it and raged at the criticism of men's horrible behaviour (and the mention of women in any sort of virtuous light) and twisted it to mean the fucking opposite, that women are treated like princesses by men and the poor neglected menz never receive reciprocated ~~abuse and violence~~ respect and pampering from women.

The support systems that women have are the ones we created for ourselves, our friends. Since the day we are born we are bombarded with movies, books about how female friendships are "fake" and how women are catty and hate each other, while men get bombarded with "brotherhood" so why aren't men being support systems to each other? Instead of expecting women to be that?

i would question the very premise that "unconditional love" is good or even possible in a romantic relationship. only parental love should be unconditional, because the child is powerless and did not choose to enter that relationship or be dependent on that person. no other love between two adults should or can be unconditional. the whole point of romantic love is that you *choose* to be with that person. this narrative of unconditional love is a manipulative rhetoric pushed onto people by abusers to make us think that expecting anything from a relationship make you *bad* because it turns the relationship into something conditional. in reality its healthy and normal to have conditions. i'm not going to love someone after they've hurt me or my family or betrayed my trust and that's normal.

The amount of times I have heard men breaking up because "she let herself go" (translating to she wore yoga pants and no make up at home)... and at work I see physical and emotional abuse of women all the time for any reason at all, foid was burned, house wasn't cleaned, hat the audacity to ask the male to do chores,...

In movies, series, books, everywhere is the trope of the lazy woman starting to get fat as soon as she got married and how much the poor husband has to suffer from that.

So many women I know have a problem to speak up for their wants and this is one I include myself in. For example when a group of friends talks about which restaurant to go to, I do not want to put my wish first and always end up complying others because I don't want to be a burden. No man I know has a problem with this.

The only people who could look around at the way women are treated, compare it to the way dogs and chldren are treated (!!), and conclude that that's "unconditional love" or love at all, are people who don't understand love and probably aren't capable of it. Most men's idea of romantically loving a woman is the most conditional idea in the world, and the conditions are by and large unreasonable, which is why their so-called "love" fails to hold up under the pressures of reality.

In fact IME lionizing "unconditional love" in and of itself shows a lack of understanding of love. Unconditional love isn't really something adults should seek for themselves - genuine love is tolerant and fair in its selection criteria but it is very much boundaried and conditional, if it weren't it would be meaningless.

I personally believe truly unconditional love is a myth. Maybe parents feel this way about their children. But to give of yourself and expect nothing in return causes resentment and is exhausting for the vast majority of people.

My ex used this phrase in a slightly different way. Hed say he wanted to be loved without being judged. Newsflash: we are all being judged, good or bad, for most everything we do. Just because you're not being a good partner does not mean women have to put up with it and love you anyway in the name of fairness, or unconditional love

I tell my children that the only people they should love unconditionally is their own children. Everyone else should have conditions, even me. Not all mothers are automatically good and neither are partners so I’m not going to teach them to love me unconditionally because it sets them up for abuse in the future. I’m not that selfish.

This whole men’s mental health debate was a way for men to say ‘but what about me?!!’. To steer us off track.

It’s funny cos men simultaneously want to be leaders who control us whilst victims who want to be coddled & leaded by us.

It’s to manipulate our empathy to allow men to leech off us. And they’re never grateful, even if you do.

Men cause much of their own mental health problems, this is why more men are homeless.

They are more likely to get into violent crime or drugs and exhaust everyone’s sympathy around them.

They are more likely to sexually harass female staff in homeless shelters and not comply with the rules and programmes.

Many are often homeless because they got into gambling, were immature / anti social when working, hit their partners, exhausted people helping etc.

Basically they caused it themselves by never taking responsibility. They expect everyone else to wipe up after their mess. Because they’re entitled.

The amount of men who play on their mental health to manipulate women into housing, feeding, fucking & paying for them is high. And has increased with more average men turning to sociopath tactics they learned in Pick Up Artist communities.

If there is one thing we have learned about men it’s that they are universally lazy & manipulative when left to their own devices.

If they weren’t we would see tons of articles on how to be a better partner for women. Instead we see tons on how to abuse & manipulate a woman without being caught. How to control & belittle women.

And how do they return the favour when women do help them? Usually taking the piss. Cheat with random women off apps. Milking them dry. False promises that will never come to light. Stealing money out of joint accounts.

It’s a way for men to just deflect the problems they cause women and put the spotlight back on us and what we should be doing for them, to rectify THEIR mess.

Most men make themselves intolerable to be around past a certain amount of months.

They make it very difficult to believe them after too many bad experiences.

That isn’t womens problem.

Men’s entitlement is. The assumption they can go around acting as irresponsible, disrespectful and exploitative as possible….& someone will always be around to coddle them better, so they can do it again.

This was always going to happen as women got more educated & independent. Men were always going to kick up a fuss. It’s expected.

But we should not be responding to it with immediate passivity & grace as they want. Don’t feel sorry for men who literally laugh at the abuse women go through & gaslight them on a daily basis. Your empathy is wasted on them.

Because let’s be real the vast majority of these men shouldn’t have passed through in the first place.

They’re sat around spitting their dummy out watching extreme porn deluding themselves they are good men.

Well good men are in high demand, so I can guarantee you are not one of them.

The bar is pretty low for men…so they have to be quite delusional, intolerable & incompetent that no women wants to deal with them.

It’s not our responsibility to raise grown men. It’s theirs.

They do not treat women with respect. They do not want a happy family as they claim. They do not want to work together.

They want control. At our expense.

And they’re angry women don’t want to be free womb slaves, maids & prostitutes to them.

I can’t stand the myth that women naturally have these ‘support systems’ and are catered for/loved by default.

No John- women actually go through the EFFORT of developing interpersonal relationships- sacrificing and giving- we have to, whether we like it or not because that is expected of us in our family, workplace, and everyday lives.

I watched a prison documentary. In the documentary it said that female prisoners rarely have family members visit them, however male prisoners are regularly visited by their families. The men’s families contitue to love, support, visit, and send money to their sons, fathers, and brothers while the women are disowned and forgotten by their families. It was sad.
