As a Black British person it hurts to hear people be horrible & racist (yes racist! They hide it under labelling her ‘american’) to someone who, no offence, could be white passing & has eurocentric features & not overly ‘black’ be discriminated against which tells me where other black women and I stand in the UK. No matter how much you assimilate, you are just another black person to some people. And if you do what she did, do what made her and her family happy, they will start a witch-hunt and deem you ‘selfish’ (better to be happy and selfish than unhappy and be called it anyway!)

The monarchy to a lot of millennials and gen z living in the uk is a archaic and useless; that symbolises classism, unearned entitlement and archaic superiority. In the UK we have a long standing class problem that has perfectly absorbed racism. Example:

On tv there was a black actor speaking about a swanky event she was attending. (Black tie).

Another guest came up to her and asked her a question, thinking she was working there.

The actor said 'they picked me out because they figured I didn't belong because of the colour of my skin'.

She then said 'If I was white they would have thought I belonged, until I opened my mouth. 3 extra seconds.'

Megan has had to deal with overt and obviously disgusting racism. She has also had to deal with speculation about her social ambitions, this is the more socially acceptable racism. (Eg the idea that most black people are working class so any black person that has money must be nouveau riche or hyacinth bucket. English people hate to see people do well. They say you are abandoning your roots and being fake. They will bring out the knives for you. As they did for Megan).

Piers Moron is upset that a woman who he considers his social inferior has leap frogged over him. Its because of his perception of her social background and status, which is informed by this 'polite classist' racism.

And, the entitlement of expecting pretty women to fall over themselves for him.

My aunt (who is kind of an OG FDSer before FDS was a thing, she’s been living FDS since her 20s and she’s 55 now) and I love how unabashedly typical Piers is with Meghan. This dude is just mad she didn’t want to meet him for drinks one day in like 2012– while he was MARRIED to whatever 2nd or 3rd wife of his— and has been pissy about it since. How DARE this “colored” woman turn him down! How dare she not give HIM the time of day! How dare she not waste a mere LOOK his way! So, to make himself feel better, he finds whatever he can to shit on her. That’s a pretty longstanding ego trip if ya ask me. Piers is not going to get off of his period for a while. To be honest the majority of the British public don't give a toss about the monarchy. They are the leftovers of a bygone era. Most people don't understand the dislike of Megan Markle, and just have no opinion on her whatsoever.

This is all drummed up by the British Press as they enjoy hounding people for their own monetary gain.

What is becoming clear from some of these comments and the general rhetoric Brits have witnessed in the British press is that “some” people are CLEARLY threatened when a beautiful woman of colour does not feed into the stereotypical and non threatening “mammie” trope that the media and world likes to pigeonhole women of colour into .

Especially if she is very attractive , wealthy , and educated . Kate and Meghan share MANY similarities and Kate’s ascension into Royal circles was far more contrived and typical of someone determined to marry well and up( and so what ?!) ( although I do not advocate being a pick me-even for a Prince ) but for some reason it seems a lot of women have a visceral and particular axe to grind against Meghan.

It is bizarre and some of the comments in this thread , from women who should have gained some insight from being on FDS into the villainising , scapegoating and stereotyping women of colour face in the media on top of just being women are disappointing to say the least . No one is saying Meghan is an angel but to dismiss the blatant and abhorrent treatment she faced in the UK at unprecedented levels is either wilfully obtuse or sinister and both are unacceptable IMO...

Thank you for this post! I decided over a year ago that Meghan Markle would be my Racist/Insecure Woman litmus test. It never fails. I suspect Piers Morgan is using Meghan Markle to promote awareness of his brand in the US. He's fully aware that Harry and Meghan are an international couple who have millions of eyes on them, he's fully aware a large portion of the US is right leaning, racist and ripe to be whipped up into an outraged frenzy and he's fully aware that having controversial opinions about her makes him notorious, in/famous and brings in viewers. He's very smart. I really dislike him.

As a Black British woman who leans towards Meghan’s side, I have to say she hasn’t handled the entire affair well. Meghan should have know what she was getting into. Her British friends tried to warn her against dating Harry because the British press are so unforgiving. She didn’t listen. Meghan seems to want all the benefits of being a Royal without wanting to be part of it, and that’s just not really how it works. It seems like she believed that she would be the exception to the long established rules in the Royal Family that says if you marry into it, you lose any sort of agency/personality. I’m a Republican, so I don’t agree with this position, but it is what it is.

I guess I'll be the unpopular one then lol. Megan isn't a rebel or underdog in all this. The Queen has been nothing but welcoming towards her. She never held Megan and Harry against their will or restricted their freedoms. The Queen even stayed on good terms with her uncle and Wallis Simpson despite the rest of the Royal family hating their guts.

I'm honestly shocked to see FDS tearing down the Queen (a woman) with their preconceived ideas of her instead of the facts.

Piers Morgan is an idiot but I'm so sick of hearing about Harry and Megan either whining to or about the press every 15 seconds. It's embarassing. I'm not interested in the super rich, famous and privileged publically bemoaning how difficult their lives are. If they want to go their own way they're free to, stop popping back up to remind everyone you're going your own way. Both of them are dreadfully self-interested whingers and would be much improved in the eyes of the world if they learned to keep their mouths shut. This Oprah interview is just the rich person version of making a dramatic facebook status about someone. And the rich person version is no less cringey.

The headlines coming out about her being a bully are obviously weak smear tactics by the palace. Nobody else is ridiculous enough to try and defame someone by revealing that they complained with inappropriate force about an egg sandwich (or whatever it was). I mean, I can believe it -- Megan Markle is definitely that woman who throws a fit over not being able to order the poached eggs on gluten free toast breakfast at 3pm when breakfast ended at 11, not that her attitude to her team would have been an issue if she were willing to toe the palace party line -- but it's a bloody stupid story to run. Not just because the subject is ridiculous, but because it will feed into Harry & Megan's persecution complex and fan the flames of the media circus even more. The whole thing is embarassing.
