One boyfriend from college seemed to be the “clean one” in the house he was living in with dudes. I thought I hit the jackpot— he did his dishes, cleaned up after himself, his room was always decent and clean. AND THEN I SAW HIS BATHROOM.

His toilet was black and orange and his shower was part of the matching set. I was appalled. His gay best friend was trying to tell me, “look I wouldn’t even step foot in that bathroom of his either.” I would just quietly use the restroom and shower in the cleaner bathroom across the hall. And he’d join me too sometimes! But the thing was— why not just clean your fucking bathroom? I thought I hit the jackpot because he told me I could leave my toothbrush at his place. And I left it in his nasty ass bathroom 🤮 Same thing with any food that I wanted to keep over. But I bought it and put it there. He didn’t even buy it for me 🤮 I still had to sleep on his flat ass pillow and I wasn’t made comfortable since he “had” to sleep facing his laptop. So I had to sleep facing the wall. My recent ex had a filthy apartment when I met him. I’ve talked about his toilet (the radioactive toilet) and how his baseboards were covered in HAIR. His fucking HAIR. When I stayed over, I would use his roommate’s (equally nasty) bathroom in the middle of the night because I just couldn’t do it. Then I told him “Look. We’re going to Walmart and YOU are buying bleach and cleaning supplies. I’ll tell you how to do it, but you’re cleaning your bathroom.” And I’d have to remind him when his toilet was turning black again. The kicker was that his mother and sister expected me to “make” him a cleaner person and to find him a less dumpy apartment.At the time I thought they were affirming me as a great partner for him 🤡 But they weren’t. I still found him and his roommate a better apartment but their cleaning habits were still pretty shitty. I think I justified the fact that he wasn’t straight up nasty in certain ways (like he did his own laundry and did his dishes, he just never put in the effort to be clean about it) so it was acceptable. His family wanted me to mother him. When his family came to his old apartment one day, his mom and sister literally got to cleaning and sprucing his space as soon as they stepped in. Cleaning his filthy kitchen, opening up the blinds, putting in an air freshener. I sat there and let them do it, but I was like... what the fuck.

A coworker from a previous job told me some really good advice: The way a man keeps his bathroom tells you everything you need to know about him.

I have literally never been to a man’s place that did not have a disgusting bathroom. And when you think about it— you have to have never cleaned your shower or tub for it to be fucking BLACK or ORANGE. Disgusting.

I know it’s a cultural joke at this point that all bachelors live in shit show apartments and when they make these jokes Sis, they’re telling on themselves. If he’s not willing to make space for you in his apartment he sure as hell isn’t going to make space for you in his life. I hate how every romantic comedy it’s up to the girl to be his bang maid and clean his shit and make his bed and blow him like the worlds worst Oedipus complex. Face it queens, if he’s not willing to give you a pillow he’s basically saying that you can sleep outside when you’re not sleeping with him.

I recently bought a 2 pack of king size pillows. It cost TWENTY FUCKING DOLLARS. They aren't horrible quality either (I don't sleep on them, they are just to make my California King bed inviting and pretty; I sleep on a high quality memory foam pillow).

Ladies, if the man you are seeing doesn't care for himself, he will NOT care for you. If his hands (the most accessible part of his body to clean) are dirty, he is KING SMEGMA and should be avoided at all costs.

Why are their pillows so flat??? Where do they even buy these pillows???? One of my exes had two flat pillows that he used to fold in half to make them bulkier to sleep on. Wtf

You spend 8 hours a day sleeping. Comfortable bedding is paramount. I won’t accept anything less than 4 pillows (2 per side) and they have to be feather/down filled not that couch foam. Sheets need to be a soft natural fabric and clean.
