I watched this on netflix thinking it’d be a fun watch and by the end I had realised I was so unhappy with my ex and I had been settling. Daniel Sloss has said hundreds of people have messaged him online saying this show propelled them to break up with their partner. He’s really doing great work!

I do love what he has to say, and he makes solid points. However, in my personal experience at least, men who are the more intellectual/cynical/discerning/skeptical types regarding love are often very stingy, their mentality is very much “what’s in it for me?” And they play off their stinginess as pragmatism, while still holding women to the expectation of being absolutely perfect to “deserve” a commitment in the back of his mind. Example: I was talking with a guy who basically said all of this. It was clear he was very interested in me, but because of his “skepticism about gender roles, society’s importance on love, realistic love”, etc, he didn’t commit to me materially (ie just texting, not offering for any dates, to spend any money, etc). So obviously my interest in him plummeted. The second I stopped responding to him in a timely manner, so did he. He even went out of his way to message me again talking about how he only invests in people who prove that they’re invested in him. I was like, dude we’ve been talking for two weeks. Fuck off. (In my head, I said that. In reality I never texted back). But this point is just to show how men can use a facade of being “evolved” to continue being stingy, withholding, and viewing things transactionally (and fundamentally unequally).

Love this! I know a woman who needs to see this - we used to work together, a good friend of mine still works with her, and she talks about her situationship problems to him all the time. She told my friend she literally cannot be alone. Which is probably part of why she's has a litany of bad guys in the 5+ years I've known her, but this verbally and emotionally abusive underemployed loser who ignores her Monday through Friday and refused to commit to her when she asked, is the worst. She is in her mid 30s and wants a family, yet she keeps making the decision to date losers, so she's worrying about her clock more, which is porky affecting her already poor decision making. She can't afford therapy but there is plenty she can do on her own, I told him to suggest Bandcroft to her, or to check out therapists and others on YouTube who make videos about setting boundaries/self esteem, but he told me she isn't the type to just pick up a book and read. 🤷🏼‍♀️. Don't know what to tell you then. Being alone doesn't have to be lonely, if you hate coming home to a house w/ no boyfriend that much, it's your responsibility to recognize that is not normal, and figure out why you feel that way. Personally I wish I'd been smart enough to realize years ago that a relationship won't fix my own personal problems, it won't fix what I don't like about me.

Of course nothing is wrong with being alone. Great men have sworn off women in the past to focus on their studies and no one makes fun of them.

But when women choose to stay alone it’s looked down upon.

Society wants women to be paired up with men so badly. I guess it’s because if a woman is single, then so is a man, which means he might do stupid shit and ruin people’s lives. So society wants women to give men a chance, thinking it’s their responsibility.
