Every man I’ve ever gone out on a date with has brought up their high school “gf” (meaning the girl they held hands with for 3 weeks and got as far as 2nd base with). They cannot stop comparing every girl they meet to this gf who was too young to realize her self worth and have standards.

Since one girl put up with their shit, they believe that all women should too and become emotionally stunted for life

I can barely remember high school, I pretty much wiped it from my memory the second I finished. I certainly don't hold on to hating every idiot boy who was ever mean to me.

I went to my 10 year school reunion and it was exactly what I hoped it would be. I was unpopular but luckily had a small group of similar misfits. We totally did a glow up and it was great tbh but fleeting and we left quickly to go and have dinner by ourselves.

None of my small group chose to attend the 20 year because that part of our lives was a very long time ago.

It is so bizarre. I was so happy the day I graduated high school because I knew that it was over. I could put a lid on it and never look back. And, in 28 years, I haven't.

But yet so many men...even in their forties...live to rehash either the victories or the traumas of their teenage life. It is so damn boring.

Romanticizing and yearning for childhood is such a male thing in general. I know so many men who are always like, "God, don't you want to go back to being a kid? No responsibilities, no politics, just cartoons and riding around on bikes with your friends."

Um, I don't know what kind of childhood you had, David, but I'm the oldest daughter of a large family. What is this "no responsibilities" you speak of? I do remember riding around on bikes with my friends, it was lots of fun. I also remember adult men following us around in trucks yelling obscenities at us.

Adolescence is traumatizing for women, and it's because of these boys who were so carefree.

"Oh, remember driving around with your first girlfriend, making out under the bleachers at the football game?" Uh, I remember the guy who kept trying to put his hands up my shirt even when I told him not to. I remember the guy who broke up with me and called me slurs when I wouldn't put out. I remember pregnancy scares. I remember the guy who showed me porn for the first time because he wanted me to think that stuff was normal and women liked it.

"Remember high school parties?" I remember how many of my friends were sexually assaulted at those parties, is that what you mean?

"Remember your first summer job?" I remember the creepy 38 year old manager whose number I eventually had to block because he was sending me dick pics. I remember being afraid that he was going to come to my house, because he had my address in the employee records, but being too afraid to tell my parents because I felt like the whole thing was my fault somehow.

Like, I do have a lot of happy memories of adolescence and childhood. I had some great friends. I did some fun stuff. There were some exciting dramas. I have some fun stories. But it was not carefree, and it was definitely not the Best Days of My Life. Because I'm a woman.

For some, high school is the best time of their life because they have "adult-like" thoughts and behaviors but they are still treated like a child, ie everything is done for them and handed to them. They still have mummy and/or daddy. No rent no bills just an education you didn't have to work for or choose and whatever else your parents provide.

I have met a lot of dudes who talk about how they were sooo cool, so smart and talented, etc in high school and they maintain their life at 17 as the peak of their existence. The goal. But that life at 17 was only enabled by the fact that they were a child. Despite looking and acting in some ways like an adult they were still a child under the care of others and still had many childlike thoughts and behaviors.

As for white boys who grew up wealthy, their high school years were likely filled with sports teams, summer camps, band practice, homemade pizza and ice cream by mom and absolutely 0: work, chores, bills, exposure to the harsh realities of the real world like poverty and racism and inequality. Maybe they had a weekly tutor who provided a structured environment for him to do his homework, so he always got good marks in class without having to work especially hard or have any self-discipline. He probably had a car and the promise that his mistakes would dissolve at the age of 18. Future was bright: he could attend any college he wants to! And surely those extracurriculars and good marks mom and dad paid for will look great on an application. He has no reason to doubt himself. He is special.

So he hits his twenties and none of that is possible for so many reasons. Suddenly he needs to get health insurance. Maybe he does horribly in college without the structure provided by a tutor. He has no self-discipline and can't do basic things like clean up, work out, apply for a job. No one thinks he's special in the real world. High school sports stop mattering. No one is impressed by his SAT scores or spelling bee win.

Avoid these men like the plague. He is yearning for high school for a reason - because back then he was cared for and had little responsibilities. He wants to go back. He wants you to be his mommy who makes him feel like a special smart boy.

Because these men were so terminally online (or indoors pre internet) the only representation of high school came from movies/porn. They think that every weekend kids are having crazy parties, drinking, having sex. They think high school romances are special and pure, the most intense you'll experience in your life. Prom is amazing just like the movies and after you get to take some hot girl's virginity! They are disturbingly out of touch with reality and blame everyone else for it.

Not so much high school, but university. I'm pretty sure my ex peaked in university; he'd talk constantly about how jacked he was (he was in athletics while studying so yes, he was in very good shape), repeat the same five party stories from his fraternity days, go on and on about how popular he was, and how many girls he fucked. At the same time, oddly enough, he'd also bitch spitefully about how some girls would pass him by in favour of his taller friends (my ex is not a tall dude) and how "bullshit" that was.

Worth mentioning, he didn't seem to have any actual friends from university that he kept in close touch with; he spoke with his fraternity brothers maybe a handful of times in the almost ten years we were together, and they seemed polite but definitely not close with him. He's also almost 45 now and has been out of university for almost two decades, yet he continues to cling to it as if he just graduated.

I feel like for a lot of men, a part of them thought they deserved to be worshipped and popular in high school and especially their whole life. If they’re not revered as Adonis, they cry about how they wish they were actually hot so people will worship them. It’s not enough to have a fulfilling life with a partner, family, traveling, adventures, and hobbies if they are not also worshipped for their beauty. Never mind that commodification of a body usually peaks when you’re young then goes downhill, they will want to live out their hollywood actor fantasy.

Omfg yes! My 40 y.o. LVX would still brag almost about getting into bars underage and getting drunk and smoking pot on field trips as a teenager. Or having his own apartment (it wasn’t- he was staying with his older sister) so he was popular for a year but it “didn’t really matter to him” (so why have you told me the same thing 8 times). I cringed like that little boy in the memes (forgetting his name, I think it’s Elliot lmao). One time he almost was like challenging me “what cool edgy stuff did you do as a teenager” or “oh you were a good girl and a goody two shoes huh?” I responded I wasn’t and had my own types of rebellion (I don’t remember most of them because I don’t live in my childhood and adolescence - didn’t say that part tho), and mentioned one or two and he was like “pfft that’s not even anything”. Like you could tell he felt like such a badass for getting drunk by the train tracks on 7-11 liquor his delinquent coworker bought for him and his buddies when he was 16. Honestly embarrassing lol.
