My problem with this is who they think the audience is. They make it seem like as a man, in any given scenario, I must resist the insatiable urge to rape, and that it takes a herculean effort. I disagree. I would say that most men (at least me) find the idea of raping someone basically inconceivable, and just not a possible action based on their character. A poster can't instill this, and to those who already feel that way its just insulting. The other side is that that there are men who would rape in a particular situation, and for those I doubt any stupid poster is going to change what is innate to their very being.

Men are strong so they are the only ones capable of doing bad things, women are weak and valuable and are the only ones capable of having bad things done to them so its up to the men to protect them.

I think it would be more effective if it spelled out what IS rape. If it was actually informative instead of just pandering to sexist bigotry.

Take my campus for example. Nearly everyone here is a rapist and they just dont know it. I pointed this out to the powers that be. If they really wanted to stop rape they could just tell everyone that everything is rape. I mean thats what it boils down to. If she (technically he but come on) has a drink then its rape. If she took an advil its rape. If you cant prove consent (and who can) its rape. Really its basically just rape if she decides later (even years) that it was. So instead of paying someone to shit out some hallmark message posters why not just inform everyone that all heterosexual sex is tantamount to rape. That way everyone (really just guys but you cant say that) can decide how they want to proceed in giving someone that much power over their academic lives.

Here is one example and some permutations that would illustrate this instead of blowing smoke up the rape industries ass. They could have a poster of a guy kissing a girl and then the caption could say:

Did she have a drink earlier? Youre a rapist and your academic career is over!
Can you prove before a board of ~~school officials who took a one hour course in how to say "the one with the penis is guilty"~~ indoctrinated feminists that you obtained informed enthusiastic consent to a lower standard of proof before proceeding with this amorous encounter? Then youre a rapist and your academic career is over!
If she decides she was raped tomorrow can your schoolwork withstand you being asked to vacate the campus so she isnt exposed to a hostile environment while the ~~witch hunt~~ campus judiciary hearing weighs your innocence against the very real possibility of risking the loss of the entire university's Title IX funds?

I'm looking at this image right now, and all I see is the implication that men, and only men, commit rape - either against women or other men. Totally absent is a lesbian couple, or a cell depicting a reverse dynamic, wherein a woman refrained from raping her male partner. It leaves me to wonder if the "artist" responsible for this little piece of garbage is aware of the definition of rape:

Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim. [Source: FBI]

under which it is entirely possible for a lesbian to rape her female lover or a woman to rape a man.

Particularly revealing to me are the top and bottom right cells. The first one implies that its "male responsibility" to look out for and protect the interests of women - whether or not he is also drunk (I would assume both persons would be drunk in this case). This, in fact, infantalizes women and places an unfair burden of responsibility on men. If alcohol makes women vulnerable and in need of protection, wouldn't the same be said of men? We're all human, after all.

The bottom right cell just bothers me - why are men always expected to pay for dates? Why is it considered alright for women to demand men to "put out" financially and emotionally, but a man isn't allowed to seek sex?

The two cells I've addressed really just stem from a massive sense of female entitlement - that a man should be responsible for the consequences of her actions and that men should pay her way with no expectation of reciprocation.

Over all, this ad campaign is dehumanizing to men and just another example of how men in our society are shamed and stripped of our dignity.

If you're going to target all men, then the message could be about protecting young men -- it could make the same claims but it wouldn't have the same "all men are rapists" vibe that these posters do.

For example, many young men don't know that if they have been drinking with a girl and then have sex, then they can be found guilty of rape even if consent was given. I don't think it's fair to call such a person a rapist, but legally he is.

The catchphrase should be something like "protect your partner; protect yourself."

Let's be honest though, it's good that they're targeting potential offenders. I think we can all agree that it's better to persuade people to think about the potential victim, rather than bleating on about how 'her skirt was too short' or 'he shouldn't have been in that alley'. From that perspective, these ad campaigns are doing good things.

But I just wish they wouldn't perpetuate the myth than only men are rapists and that only men are worth targeting with such ad campaigns. Just having a couple of posters where the woman was the potential attacker would have made this an absolutely fantastic campaign. Just two to the men's four would have been enough.

The problem I have with these posters is that male "strength" is always being used as a scapegoat for extrapolating criminal behavior onto an entire gender. It doesn't matter that 95% of all rapes are committed by men (according to the FBI's previous definition of rape, which did not even include men as potential victims), because a tiny fraction of the entire male population is doing the criminal behavior. It's no more correct to say that "Latino culture is gang culture" because a few Latino guys in your neighborhood are in a gang. You can't judge an entire group by the obviously criminal activities of a few random members of that group.

And, for anybody that wants to say that we all participate in "rape culture," I wholeheartedly agree with you, and I welcome any examples comparable to Let's Go to Prison which make fun of women being raped. Show me the hour-and-a-half-long rape jokes about women that make millions of dollars at movie theatres across the country, and I'll readily admit that there's a rape culture surrounding women. But until then, nothing trumps the rape culture surrounding men; at least women could legally be raped prior to 2012.

While I think it would be better if they included some aimed at women as well (though at least they had one about gay men), I think the campaign is a decent one. Particularly the last one about her not owing you after you paid for the date, you read loads of stuff complaining about women not "putting out" after having been wined and dined (also check out anything that talks about the "economics of sex" or the "market value of women" or anything like that.)

Much better than all those campaigns aimed at the victims of rape.

How is this "incorrect"? Presumably we wouldn't object (and rightly so) to the few awareness posters here-and-there that manage to slip through the cracks in the PC perimeter that advise women to make smart decisions and not to get blackout drunk and go home with a stranger. We also wouldn't object, would we, to the assertion that the overwhelming majority of rapists are men. So why are we objecting to a campaign reminding us, hey, men's volition has a big role to play in rape.

Maybe at the margin, this directly prevents a rape or two, and maybe it further encourages men to talk about how it isn't okay to rape.

Are we so sensitive that we can't take a little constructive advice? Harden the fuck up. If you aren't a rapist, congratulations, the poster isn't aimed at you.

No it's correct and trivially true. I think the posters could perhaps be about the four men in the posters, at least from what I see here. For the statement "men can stop rape" to be true it only requires that some men are able to stop at least one rape and four examples are given.

It's not that it's an incorrect campaign. It's that it just doesn't convey a meaningful message.
