My eldest son was born handicapped. I’ve had to devote the last ten years to his disability. I don’t even know what I want and who I am anymore. I’m now my wifes lowest priority too. Not what I imagined it to be.

I have 3. It’s challenging and hard, but it’s the greatest thing ever. They’ve done social experiments where they ask random people walking dogs if they would sell their dog for a million bucks. No one agrees. With children magnify that feeling by a million. There’s no amount of money or personal freedom that can compare to the love bond of your own children.

I m same age & never having kids. In my case one of the factors why my marriage ended was my decision to stay child free.

Do i regret my choice, definately no. If you are happy with urself & your decision u will be fine. I have never liked babies or kids ( i m not a psychopath, i do love dogs & other animals & do find them cute).

Do what you like, dont make life decisions to make others happy instead do things that make u happy. Are my friends & family disappointed in me yes, do care what they think... No. Some ppl would say we r being selfish but atleast we know what we want, most ppl have no clue.

Not even for a second, My kids are 20 and 18 and i'd consider having another two if It was a viable option, But if I don't, the ones I've got will do just fine

I've seen a pretty interesting pattern for childfree dudes.

If you don't really care and don't give it a second thought ever, you most likely won't care later on.

However, if you have questions about the future and think you might change your mind later, issues tend to flare up later rather than sooner which makes it a bit troublesome to mend up.

See which one you are, and make your mind around that possibilities.

I'm 39 and I have two girls aged 7 and 3, I don't regret it at all, it's a kind of love that you'll never experience without kids. They have given me a purpose in life.

That being said, you've gotta do what's right for you, if you don't want kids, you don't want kids. Not everyone is up for being a parent.

Better to not have kids than to resent them if you do.

2 kids. 15 years marriage, now divorced. Eldest is 13. She took them from me. I only see them 2.5 days out of the week. If something can be taken from me, it was never mine to begin with. I was in a similar situation. In my thirties and pretty certain I didn't want kids but I knew that my girlfriend really wanted kids and it wasn't going to last if we wanted different things. We ended up getting married and having a child and it has made me happier and more fulfilled than I ever was without them.

I'm not saying you need to change your convictions or this is the better path for everyone, but having my kid is the only real thing that matters to me and has enriched every aspect of my life. I couldn't imagine how unfortunate it would have been if I would have never had that.

I won’t deny that I’ve sometimes romanticized the idea of having a child or two and dedicating my life to their happiness, but in that vision I’m not working and my life is very stable. Reality always brings me back down.

Well, when you're sure get the snip, and tested, and confirmed sterile. That'll cut way back on the ones that think/hope they'll get you to change your mind - even if they have no interest in telling you that's their intent, or they may try to babytrap you - even sabotaging birth control, etc. So, yeah, get 'er well done. And if you've not told her, and she gets pregnant, and claims you're the daddy - then quietly lawyer up, but other than that mostly relax, and be planning to dump her cold, hard, and fast - at least at the appropriate time.

I dont regret kids but it's a lot of work if the woman isn't properly aligned. The kid is nothing. It's taking care of another grown adult who likely can't control their emotions, has no achievements with their life before you to stabilize themself, that's going to be the most stress for men. Get your money first. And only allow yourself to have a child with woman who can add to what you have my suggestion.

How do you know who that is? Ask her "what did you dedicate the last XX years of your life to be stable today and match me??"

Many made that decision and came back on it when they got a woman they'd actually want to raise kids with.
Decisions are temporary. Women very quickly age out from coming back on that decision, men have no time limit.
Present a happily childless 55 yo prime specimen male with a sweet young woman who'd trust to raise any kids, and he'll start to see the benefits to having someone to leave his kingdom to.

If you don't see yourself wanting to be parents together with her when she does wish kids, might as well set her loose and find a man who will. I'd done that when I was fine being with someone, but saw something unchangeable keeping it temporary.

I'm 55 years old, and have two kids under 15 years. I'm an older dad and hadn't been married they long before my wife got pregnant, so when my 1st child was born, I didn't know how to feel or how to react to the GIANT change it made to my life.

After several weeks, my child started to notice me, smiling, cooing, and laughing. After that, nothing in this world feels better than the love of my kids. I'm already thinking how bad i will miss them once they become adults and move out!

Now that I'm aging, I am glad I never had kids. I always told myself, if I really wanted, I would adopt, lots of kids needs home, I don't need to be genetically related to someone to make them a place in my family.

Turns out, it was a fantastic idea. I haven't formally adopted any, but I have helped a few older kids succeed in the world, because sadly, very few people adopt 8+ year olds, and their outlook in life is pretty dire due to not having any family or built-in support structures.

As I mentioned in another comment, having kids doesn't guarantee you won't end up alone and abandoned, and puts a lot at risk. And it is best not to have any, regret it and adopting, than having one and regretting it.

Foster homes are full of the second example.

I'm 46 and never had a child. I don't recall minding at all in my 20s and 30s, nor having any second thoughts until a few years ago.

Something though changed recently and I started wondering about the value of my life (maybe because of a game I've played). When I've stayed present-oriented, I've managed to think that just being alive is enough. But when I think about the future, I've started to doubt that just being alive is enough. We all will die someday. What value does one's life for people in the future if that someone mostly just focused on their own self?

Now maybe you have great talents, interest, and time to do something that provides a lot of value to others or to your friends and family. There existed a lot of philosophers like Spionza who were single throughout their lives and left behind writing people today still consider important. Beethoven never had children, nor did Nikola Tesla. One could even say that he follows Jesus Christ's example by not having children.

But that all said, evolution doesn't really care about any of that. It would be fair to say that you end up a dead end if you never have children. If Nature thinks, as Spinoza thought, perhaps Nature will just go on about it's way without you having an influence if you never have any children. Nature might think "just some other man who won't have children. May as well refocus my attention on those who do have children."

Also, I use to go to the anti-natalist subreddit, since I read some book and it seemed like an interesting philosophical position. But, unfortunately, I found a lot of talk there that seemed more like disliking other people for the "fun" of it than something serious. I also once saw someone tell someone else that he should have never been born. Though such a person was/is a griefer in a game, I finally realized that though being childfree can be fine for some, that telling someone he should never have been born sounds more condemning that such a person should "ride the bus". Telling someone else that he or she should be childfree isn't just hateful, it also suggests such a person has no value to the future of humanity. Some associations that childfree has seem rather unfortunate.

So, I'm not trying to say that you shouldn't have children. But, my advice consists in that you try to appreciate those who do have children. Whatever human future will happen, it depends on those who have children and care for children.

Personally speaking though, I don't think I could handle having children. And if you don't want to do something, unless you grew up a certain way I think, you probably couldn't do that something unless you feel compelled to do so.

I don’t regret not having kids. I love kids and am godfather to several of my friends kids. It’s the best role ever.

I get to take them places, buy them all kinds of cool stuff, share their confidences and offer advice. In some situations this can really take the heat off the parents.

When the kids were little it was understood that if mom and or dad needed a break I was only a phone call away.

It takes a village and I’m part of it. Do I regret not having my own? Not on your life.

I feel so bad for these guys who’ve never had kids, won’t, or can’t…..your life, do what you want…..it’s just sad knowing what they’re missing. And had I never had kids I’d be saying the daft same thing. And some people maybe shouldn’t be fathers. But you don’t get it until you get it. You don’t know what you don’t know.

That said, imagine how much you love your dog, or love your brother, parent…..now times that by about 1000 and you’re getting close to the love you’ll have for your children. As a single man I would never have believed what I’m saying now, that’s the tragedy.

I even went through a brutal divorce, accused of every vile thing you can imagine, didn’t see my kids for a year, etc….got joint custody and equal parenting time and kept my house.

I’d do it all over again. I have two kids. I tell my son there’s nothing like being a father and I hope he has a family someday. I also educate him about the risks and how to mitigate them (don’t involve the government for starters.)

It’s so sad to see this young generation get fucked over so badly by the economy that just that issue keeps so many from having kids.

I get it, my house was $180k, mortgage is $1350/month…..it’s worth abut $550k today, and I couldn’t afford to buy it. Damn, things need to change.

I am happily child-free at 40. My wife wanted kids, but it didn’t work out that way. And, today, I am so thankful that I never had kids. I suffer from ADHD burnout working a regular 9-5; there’s no fucking way that I have the capacity to raise kids. This is just another area where people with ADHD or Autism need to be aware that ‘normal’ life advice might not apply to us. We can be great parents, but the cost is going to be greater than what other people experience.
