I've never posted anything political before, but good lord am I angry. I'm in my Sociology 101 class and we're currently watching a video about the male viewpoint of sexuality. There's too much to go through right now, but I'm going to get the gist of as much as I can.
The video begins by making claims that all guys follow the "bro code". The claim is that the "bro code" is get with as many women as possible because women are a symbol of power. Various shots of frat boys and different psychologists are coming on saying things like "Men have this image in their heads that come from music videos and television shows that make men want to have sex as much as possible."
The next section is about how porn is evil and how men have made such disgusting images that degrade women. They cite examples such as bondage porn and rape fantasies as "dangerous signs" that men are becoming animals and insensitive to things like rape.
They're also making points that all heterosexual men hate homosexuals and that we try to become as alpha-male as possible.
What I'm taking away from all of this is that apparently a lot of sociologists (according to my professor) thinks like this. I highly doubt this, but that's not the point. The whole point that I'm seeing here is that there's some sort of gap of knowledge about how popular culture, advertising, or basic sexuality in general function.
I'm completely offended at the fact that these people think that all men view porn as a way to withdraw from intimacy or that certain types of porn are disgraceful. I'm not too eager to go into detail, but I for one will fully admit to watching porn from a very young age as well as several various "genres". I've seen some "disgusting" things, yet never have I thought that women were to be treated less or that I thought that actual rape was cool. The fact that these people think that guys only view porn as a replacement for sex and as a way to view degrading and horrible things is appalling.
Personally, I watch porn. I also have sex with my girlfriend. I'm monogamous and I'm extremely proud of it. I don't have any tolerance for people that cheat, it disgusts me. If someone has an known arrangement or is just seeing people casually, I have no problem with that, that's their thing and more power to them. But if you are in a committed one on one relationship and you agree to that, sleeping with someone else is an atrocity in my book.
Now, having this viewpoint, I do not consider porn cheating. I understand that there are some legitimate addictions out there and some real problems that arise from it. Porn for me though, is just a way of release from a 15 hour day of classes and work. It's not a replacement for intimacy with my girlfriend, which I would take over porn any minute of the day.
I may have some rather "different" sexual preferences (at least from society's viewpoint), but just because I enjoy certain things (think 50 shades of grey, even though I don't approve of the reference, whole different topic) doesn't mean that I want to do things like this with random and unwilling strangers and that I enjoy the idea of rape. I can't any logical and valid point in this argument of "if you are aroused by it, then you're dangerous". I'd equate that to the old "if you play GTA, you'll become a violent psychopath!" argument.
Statements like, "Take Family Guy, which has a typical 'bro audience', makes rape jokes all the time. I don't think that McFarlane would be laughing or making jokes if his mother or sister or wife had been defiled or degraded like that" are completely ridiculous. I'll admit that there are some rape jokes that I find funny, but that doesn't mean that I don't take it seriously. I'll laugh at a joke about anything if it's funny, but that doesn't mean that I don't give the matter some weight.
Other points that are trying to be made are things like, "Guys have a 'don't tell, don't snitch' policy. Men make sure that other men get away with unspeakable things and are very harsh towards other men that step up."
All I see is that these so called "sociologists" don't seem to understand anything but a simplistic view of animalistic behavior used as marketing and humor. While there are some very problematic issues in our society that are no simple matter, I don't think that men are these evil beings that view women as complete objects.
I know this is kind of hodgepodged, but I'll be editing this together soon. I just had to get this out before I lost my shit.
TL;DR Video in sociology class says that all men are animalistic sex machines who view women as objects and anything bad that happens to them as hilarious.
What are your thoughts on this?
EDIT 1: Added some thoughts on the pornography. Also, I'll try to get a copy of the video to put up.
EDIT 2: I found the video. They want you to buy it, but I'm assuming someone would be able to find it somewhere online. If not, you can stream a low quality version. http://www.mediaed.org/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=246

I'm thinking about it. I was angry. We all laughed at some of the family guy jokes or the ridiculousness of frat boy chants like, "no means yes, yes means anal". She got extremely angry, and said we should all be ashamed of ourselves.

What I don't think people understand is that people aren't laughing because they think things like rape and such are funny, they're laughing because the statements made are usually absurd, and that's what's funny.
If someone makes a dumb joke like "if there's no grass on the field, turn her over and play in the mud", that's not funny because sex with underage girls is "cool" or "funny", people laugh because it's fucking absurd and laughter is one of our ways of dealing with absurd things.

I don't know why I love that show, but I do. In any case, I know there are some frat members like that, but I also know there are a lot more that aren't.

These have a lot of benefits and I think that it's extremely important we have these things. The only thing I had a problem with is this is supposed to be an introduction to basic theories, and this wasn't presented as such.

I find the word "bro" when used like this derogatory. It's nothing short of an insult used to generalize men into "idiot alpha-male sex-craved lunatics that get shitfaced and beat women with one hand and high-five their buddies with the other". That's just wrong, sexist, demeaning, and has no place in a classroom. I wonder how people would take it if I said all women followed a "hoe-code", which would generalize all women and bind them to the negative aspects of some women.
As for the bondage stuff, if you ever have to write any papers, you should take a trip over to /r/bdsm if you want good firsthand information on the lifestyles and fetishes based on the experiences of the participants, and not personal opinions of outsiders looking in (or from reading 50 Shades). They're a wonderful community of doms, subs, and everyone in between. There's a lot of happy men and women there, countless posts about the lifestyles (read: both weekend role-play, and 24/7 slaves), the fetishes, and what it's really all about for the people involved. I'd love to see your teachers reaction to a paper about how BDSM is largely about trust and safety.

I've never read 50 shades. I'm actually quite versed in those subjects, I'm just kinda nervous just throwing out my sexual interests on the Internet. It just pisses me off that someone could think that just because I like that subject matter, that I'm condoning the degradation of women or the rape of women.
