A patriarchy is a society I’m which men have power of rule, in which women have no say and in which men use their power to advantage men.

We don’t live in a patriarchy.

Men have no special power of rule. Women can and do run for public office. Women have equal voting rights. In fact there’s more women voters than men. We don’t pass laws advantaging men, we pass laws advantaging women. As a man, I have no more power of rule than any woman.

You don’t benefit from the patriarchy because we don’t live in a patriarchy.

"Patriarchy" is just a made-up term that feminists use for deflection to avoid having to be accountable for the consequences of their actions.

For example: engineering jobs pay better than childcare jobs. So if a feminist wants to complain about the gender pay gap myth, she needs to justify why she chose to go into childcare instead of engineering, when the latter would have paid much better.

One option is for her to take responsibility for her choices and admit that she chose her job for reasons other than income. But feminists hate taking responsibility for their behavior and will avoid it at costs.

So it's more likely that she'll say "the patriarchy" brainwashed and/or pressured her into doing childcare rather than engineering.

It's the universal "get out of jail free" card for feminists, in other words.

My own personal takeaways from this :

As a man, people give me a little tiny bit more respect, at least in person, because they're actually worried, consciously or not, that I just might be crazy enough and capable enough to wreck their face if they don't. Or at least shout at them angrily with my scary manly voice, or something. It's not that the bar is lower, it's not that people don't judge me, it's that most people wouldn't dare tell me to my face all the bad things they think about me, not unless it's absolutely necessary or we know each other, because.. well, there might be very unpleasant consequences.
The greater male variability thing, which means in pretty much any area you can think of, all the most capable people are going to be men. And also all the least capable. So depending on how the person is feeling all men are either incompetent, or enjoying positions of authority, or both : unearned privilege.
As a man, I am sexually undesirable by default and that's a good thing, somehow. Because being attractive is like being rich, a burden. Right.
By laser-focusing on areas in life where women are a small minority demographic, such as certain professions, we can extrapolate that specific situation to all of human existence, and conclude that women are stereotyped more.

According to feminists in the patriarchy as a man you:

-get paid more for doing the same job

-can sexually assault women without consequences cause according to them we live in a rape culture

- can manspread and masplain without consequence cause apparently those are very big advantages we have

- can be sexist towards women without consequence

- get CEO positions left and right without working for it

- be respected more in society no matter who you are as a person, as long as you are a man you can get away with shitty attitude.

If the patriarchy existed,

women would be sent to war,

would work the most dangerous labor jobs (miners, bricklayers,...) while their husbands do easy housework chores and get half of their money,

would have less amount of homeless shelters compared to men,

would receive less healthcare funding than male healthcare,

would serve more time for the same crime,

would receive more racism compared to men of their own race,

would get banned everytime they talk trash about men,

would be always forced to lose half of their hardworking money after divorce,

would not be able to spread misandry,

would not have endless organizations helping them,

would not be rescued first when they are in danger ("women and children"),

And the list goes on and on and on.

In some places as a man you would stand a better chance to be educated, you would be taken more seriously, and people would talk you as if you are the boss more than with women. You wouldn't be shunned as bad if you cheated on your wife than if she cheated on you, etc...

When that was more common the term "patriarchy" was invented as a mean to describe these tendencies. But it was quickly appropriated by ideologies as an abstract powerful enemy to revolt against, often meaning "men" among the less sophisticated feminist masses.

Patriarchy (rule of fathers) existed in various forms in times when only specific members of men had monopoly for power and were fit for rule in pseudostates in the past, so women monarch had problem to start her own reign because succession laws or customs. This doesnt meant the female rulers did not existed, they were just more rare because they were considered for the last option for dynasty to survive. Children were a political asset for rulers to make alliances and for wealthy citizens to keep the property of the family in.... the family. Because property of monarch was the same as property of state. Of course in more primitive antiquity nations, who in that times did not discovered "advantages" of absolutistic despotic rule was political power more equally distributed to important regional leaders and priests and if they had a chiefs they were something more like judges, generals or negotiators than rulers. Also in more modern societies we rejected this phase, because relations in society became such complex, we need more than one ruler in charge.

Sometimes had men more authority and power even in household. But not all men of course, societies are usually hierarchical, so only one, so only father or father figure, because for example, hypothetical ancient slave master´s wife or daughter or maidservant had more rights than slave, but less than head of the family.

Differences among "patriarchal" societies were drastic, because nearly all big or widespread societies till today were "patriarchal" in the term where head of state or head of family was owner of property and leader.

Even in societies which were originally matrilinear or where female MOTHERS were de iure head of the family, had those specific women only ceremonial power to appoint chiefs or the obligation for others to respect them and dont they do not guarantee more rights for other women or real female oriented rule. Those societies were originally considered as matriarchal, because early European ethnologists often confused matrilineal kinship systems with matriarchy, because they assumed that if the children’s line of descent was reckoned through the mothers, that must mean that the women were in charge. Likewise, in some societies a married man goes and lives with his wife’s family. Again, the ethnologists mistook this for meaning that the women ran the tribe. In same cultures, like in Sparta were rich widows, bussiness women and female land owners the most important and influential class in society, but diarchyc kings, priests and men elected to do real rule were only allowed to do "political stuff".

Today in western and westernized states there are not any special benefits for man or woman rulers or man or women heirs. Because this form of "patriarchy" became obsolete in those areas. In British royal family there is no male-preference for heirs anymore. Patriarchy dont even in original term describe rule and superiority of men, but only rule of father above all.The rights and duties of others are open to debate. Name for superiority of man would be androcracy or adriarchy.

Jordan Peterson makes a solid argument about this. The top .1% are of the white patriarchy. They’re constantly used as examples or proof of the patriarchy’s existence. Whereas the mass majority and average man does not benefit from such a privilege and is quantitatively and qualitatively perform, constantly having expectations to work harder and demonstrate competence.

The ‘benefit’ is that the average man, being socially expected to perform in such a competitive environment, is by nature harder working and more competent, this is compensated as such. That’s the benefit of having more expected of the average man.

In contrast, a woman demonstrating average competency in a male dominated field will be overwhelmingly celebrated simply for being a woman in that field where there is little competition (against other women). Even if she’s just AVERAGE. In that kind of environment, you almost guarantee mediocrity because there isn’t pressure to excel, but simply just ‘show up’.

So the benefit of the ‘privilege’, that is where you’re expected to perform at a higher level, is that you actually become better, because you have to.

I’m a feminist and I believe the patriarchy harms both sexes equally. ‘Patriarchy’ is an imperfect name just like ‘feminism’ is, but my views do count as feminist, radical feminist even. There are several different branches of feminism.

A couple very minor things:

the positive externality of a woman dressing attractive to be more appealing to Elon Musk and a homeless man gets to benefit from seeing that attractiveness but that's pretty minor.
Representational privilege in media. Male only movies are more common than female movies but I really don't see this being a major privilege.
Free porn.

This doesn't outweigh the disadvantages but if we don't "own up" to our privileges feminists will say we're blind to them.

The "Patriarchy" is concept that is so poorly defined, it's indistinguishable from a vague conspiracy theory. To answer your question, you would need a clear and precise definition of "The Patriarchy", which you are unlikely to get. At least, I've never seen one.

Important things to start out with: The "Patriarchy" has multiple definitions. According to at least one definition (rule by men), patriarchy does exist to some extent, and according to another (men advantaged over women), I'd argue it doesn't. That being said, I will for the purposes of this conversation presuppose the patriarchy exists as the gendered aspects of our social order, which generally see men wield greater amounts of explicit power.

Under this definition, it's easy to conclude that men benefit from the patriarchy, and women are harmed. But not so easily seen is that men are harmed by the patriarchy, and women benefit from it as well. For example, if you had children but chose not to take time off work, you can reasonably assume your gender has not been an obstacle to your career, whereas if you were a woman, you may be socially pressured to quit your job to stay at home. On the other hand, if you had children but were not able to take time off for work, the "patriarchal" expectation that you provide for the family, and corresponding inaction of the government in providing paid paternal leave, has been an obstacle to you spending time with your family. I imagine more women have an easier time becoming stay-at-home moms.

I don't really argue against the notion that our social system affords men some benefits, as it does women. My argument is instead that it's not worth it or relevant. Most people, man or woman, will never reach the peaks of power, so why do we focus on who occupies the top? Surely the people at the bottom, the homeless and imprisoned (mostly men), are much greater in number, and matter much more? The word "patriarchy" is a distraction from the real issues most people face, which hit men harder than they do women. And it's for this reason I don't like to use the word "patriarchy", even as I recognize it technically is accurate.
