There just seems to be so many interesting levels to this little tale...the camera operator putting the two people in the heart, and apparently putting the woman from the couple on the left in accidentally. The woman seems hopeful that the camera will pan over and put her and her bf in the picture together. That the moment will be all about her.

The guy on the right is cast in the role of 'rejected unattractive loser'...instead, he rewrites the script on the spot. Notice how he raises his eyebrows when the guys behind him pat him on the back and he realizes the heart camera is on him, as if he is thinking, "well now, how do I handle this little challenge to my self-worth?" With lightning reflexes, he dreams up a little tableaux with the beer cup, makes a joke out of the situation. Shows he's perfectly comfortable NOT having a woman on his arm, that not being in a relationship with a woman is going to define his value as a person. He's not at all shy about showing off a man's attribute (loving beer), having fun on his own.

And all the men's faces around him lighting up with enjoyment, impressed that he made the moment. Almost as though he was validating something in them as well. Notice how the guy in the black t-shirt directly behind the woman starts laughing and clapping his hands as soon as he mouths, 'I love you' before kissing the cup.

The woman frowning at him in disgust (and we have to wonder why, nothing he was doing could be taken as the least bit disgusting), cringing, trying as hard as she can with her body language to define him as 'creepy'. Yet he, and all the guys cheering around him, are just not going to let her, or the camera operator, determine his self-esteem and self-worth.

If she was a stand-up gal she would have been laughing along with everybody else and would have given him thumbs up.

There's also the complete and utter rejection of cutesy romanticism by not just the guy but the crowd and the cameraman. It really turns on its head the notion we teach people--but especially women--that "This is what true romance is! Being dramatically kissed in public by the love of your life in front of millions of people--not to mention on a big screen--surrounded by the traditional American symbol of love!" I mean it's 15-minutes of fame wrapped up in every chick-flick cliche wrapped up in pure Americanism--and this guy completely enabled it to be flipped on it's head. He said "fuck you!" to rejection and to the notion that he needed to be in a relationship to deserve the crowd's adoration. I kind of feel bad for the woman because this was her chance at the romantic moment she's been taught to seek and it didn't happen for her, but I don't understand her unnecessarily harsh response.

By being unashamedly ourselves and if someone challenges your self worth, rip the piss out of them.

I would disagree with you slightly in that if someone challenges your self worth, make your response appropriate and show them the error of their ways. Make them think about their actions. Get them thinking. Because most people are pretty reasonable, and just getting them to have a 'red pill' moment might be enough to make a new ally. Just look at how many people have subscribed to Mensrights in the past year - I think it went from 30 to over 50 thousand.

About 10 years ago I was taking a summer class at my old university, which is known for having a pretty militant Women's Studies department. I usually get a crew cut in the summer, because it's cool and comfortable. One afternoon, I was walking through the main building after a class. Up a head, a man and a woman were walking together, they looked like visiting professors. As soon as they saw me, they both stiffened and glared at me, body language as if to say, 'who are you and what right do you have to be here?'

Now bear in mind, I graduated from this university, I was taking a summer class here, I had just as much right to be in this building as they did, if not more. And I was wearing was a polo shirt and khakis, nothing anyone would find offensive. I ignored the woman completely - totally took her out of the picture - and just glared right back at the man, as if to say, 'yo, dude...what is YOUR problem?' He was the same age as me, all hair and beard, and there was just something about him that smelled, 'mangina'. I kept staring as he walked by, as if he had a dildo stuck to his forehead. It was fun watching the two of them wilt as they got the message I was sending back in my body language.

I agree with you because I think a lot of misandry is sent through everyday body language. Body language is has a lot of advantages if you want to attack or belittle someone...it's sent and received subconsciously, and since it is nonverbal if someone calls you out on it, you can claim the victim is crazy since you didn't 'say' anything offensive. So developing self-confidence and the ability to discount or counter an attacker's body language, like the man did with the woman in the gif, is a good skill to develop, IMHO.

I don't think you were wrong. Not all stereotypes are wrong.

Edit: Take for instance bikers- they all dress like bikers to be intimidating. You can betcha when a new biker puts on that bandana and gets tattoos, he plans on blending in with the group.

You don't see a biker getting looks as he strolls into the hair salon, thinking to himself.. "oh why must people judge me??"

I can surmise that you don't ride.

Not all stereotypes are wrong. Take for instance bikers- they all dress like bikers to be intimidating.

I dress "like a biker" when I ride because riding gear is very practical. A layer of leather is great for keeping the 75 mph wind from piercing through my clothes (believe me, even on a comfortably warm day the wind can feel very cold). A bandana keeps my hair out of my eyes and keeps it from getting hopelessly snarled by the wind. Sturdy boots with aggressive tread and good ankle support keep my bike upright when I'm at a stop.

Fitting in with a group isn't a factor. Actually there are extremely few bikers where I live, so if anything I get some weird looks and a fair amount of tiresome teasing from my friends. Looking intimidating isn't a primary motivation either, though I guess I'll admit that black leather fits my sense of aesthetic better than, say, pink.

There is some evidence that suggests that women are better (stonger? I don't know...) tasters than men. There senses are more sensitive... This is one of the reasons people think men more often enjoy beer (because they very well might).

Yes, generalizations and stereotypes can be true. What I want to "get over" is stereotypes and generalizations affecting the way we treat each others. Because there are exceptions to the rule. And stereotypes do affect people negatively.

So, I wasn't really completely refuting that the stereotype as a whole was untrue, just that stereotypes are stupid. Especially one that isn't super true. Only 55% of men would choose beer over another drink (http://www.gallup.com/poll/156770/majority-drink-alcohol-averaging-four-drinks-week.aspx) Just barely the majority. And about 1/4 women enjoy beer OVER other drinks - more may enjoy it somewhat.

OK, so the Gallup data mirrors the social understanding that Men are more likely to prefer a beer and a woman.

This to me sounds like saying "the only reason men can like beer is because they don't have to taste it".

It looks as though this stereotype is true thanks to the numbers from those nice folks at Gallup, and so I see no reason not to act on this knowledge. Stereotypes are useful because they give us some approximate knowledge about people that we haven't gotten to know fully. It makes sense to assume preference when 3/4 of the time you will be correct.

I'm a guy and I don't like sports at all which is very outside what is the stereotype for men. I accept that people will assume I like sports because I am a guy and I take no offense at it when they talk about them with me. I understand that 9 times out of 10 chatting about the big game will work with guys so I understand why they do it with me. I wouldn't ask that everyone be more sensitive and not talk about sports lest they bore those who don't enjoy them.

As someone who breaks a stereotype, you must deal with the fact that you are the exception.

That's just a way for you to dismiss the thoughts of other people. It's got nothing to do with her personal choice; lots of women enjoy beer. Implying that she is being selfish just because she recognizes that beer is in fact not a man's drink but is a "Person who likes beer" drink is just a way to shut down discussion and act like women who reject this notion are being mellow dramatic.

His analysis would have been just as amusing if he had used the phrase "His attribute" instead of "man's attribute" and would still have been a perfectly valid discussion about the ideas of a person's worth being tied to whether or not, at a certain point, they're in a relationship.

Getting defensive over someone's use of stereotypical language seems like something that would not jive with any movement arguing for the rights of a group. You don't want people to talk about all men--or do you only approve of it when it's a positive generalization? If someone in this forum called all men pigs, you'd be on that in a second, but it's okay to assume all men like beer and to thus gender something that is not remotely gendered?

Wasn't really trying to 'gender-shame' the woman...in fact, her body language reminds me a lot of an aunt of mine, she would probably react in much the same way...except that my aunt would probably break out laughing once she got the joke, and pat the guy on the shoulder. Maybe she's laughing now, now that the gif has gone viral, I don't know. Perhaps he was making loud gulping noises as he drank the beer, which grossed her out a bit. But from her body language, doesn't it seem a bit like she's trying to shame him?

EDIT: it could be that she was just surprised at the sudden turn of events, and startled at the man's voice and actions. I wish I could see the whole video of this. But absolutely, the most impressive aspect of it was how the guy handled the situation.
