okay, so from a philosophical perspective, the whole "women are afraid to walk home at night"/"women are told to be afraid walking home at night" are an interesting problem. considering that in general the risk of being attacked is rather small, it seems that the actual solution to this problem would be to convince women that they are reasonably safe.

if you for example take the hypothetical scenario of a person being afraid of being attacked by a bear walking home (living in a pretty rural area) the best solution to this would surely be to look at just how rare those attacks are, rather than trying to equip the person to fight off a bear that most likely will never show up.

a big part of the problem is that people are very emotional when it comes to the subject and saying something like "you'll most likely never be assaulted" is considered very offensive and will be met with responses like "tell that to all the rape victims" or "even a small chance of something horrible can be enough to make you scared every night" etc.

in the end I don't really know how to best solve this problem but on one hand, statistics like that seem to go down over time so it'll hopefully just get better, on the other hand what we can all pitch in and do is to try to call people out for fear mongering and point out that not only are they making the problem worse but they are the cause of 99% of the problem

Is that really true? I think there are quite a few postive dramatic and fictional portrayals of various male emotions. Usually when a man gets 'choked up' in a film or TV drama it's shown as a good thing. I suppose the classic scene along those lines would be marlon brando in a streetcar named desire, which isn't exactly a very positive characterisation, but if you look at the emotional sides of more recent male drama lead characters such as Tony Soprano and Walter White, I think the mainstream film and TV presentation of 'male tears' is quite un-macho.
