A couple months back I made a post about switching my gender to female for cheaper auto insurance and I'm here to update you all.

So I live in Canada, more specifically Alberta. It was time to renew my auto insurance policy this month. After a talk on the phone with my insurance broker to try to bring the price down I wasn't hesitant to ask "out of curiosity, how much would my premium be if I was a woman?" My broker didn't even laugh. She said, "well, it's illegal in Alberta to discriminate against genders for auto insurance." I said, "oh, that's good. It's also good that they acknowledged that it is in fact discrimination." Then she said, "but it is still legal to discriminate against genders for 'collision,' - whether it be just the insurance or a claim." Both apply for me. I have had a minor accident(my fault) and I need collision insurance in order to be approved for the new car that I will be financing.

I'm 23 y/o male.

I need full auto coverage to buy a new car.

$1,000,000 liability

$1,000 deductibles

Quote = $4495 annual

Quote if I was a woman = $3401

Difference = $1094

I was shocked that it was such a difference! So I decided to change my gender on my Auto Insurance policy. In order to do that they requested proof: just an updated drivers licence. $1094 difference - you bet your ass I was going through with this! So I went to the Registry place and requested they change my gender on my drivers license. They said I must amend my gender on my birth certificate first. So I called the Alberta Government and they confirmed that is what must happen. So I told them to send me the amendment forms. They did and said "after we process these forms we'll send you the next set of forms." I asked, "what do those include?" They said "a signature from a physician."

Well fuck me in my imaginary vagina! It turns out that gender is still not classified as a "state of mind" in Canada.

So there you have it. I was about to go all the way through with changing my gender up until I actually had to physically change my gender. But that's not the point, is it? The point is that us men are still being discriminated against greatly when it comes to Auto Insurance. It's not just 50 or 100 dollars, it's over $1,000 in my case. My case isn't even unique. Even if I never claimed an accident but still needed full coverage I would still be paying a significantly higher premium. And if you're a man, you probably are too. It is pure discrimination against all men.

Edit: You guys are really convincing me that I can go through with this. You're convincing me to brave the embarrassment of the process and actually book an appointment to be diagnosed as a woman, and that they won't ask to see any surgery. Cheaper auto insurance for life among other benefits....seems worth it. Seems really worth it. Fuck it, I'm doing it. Will update in short future!
