Speaking as an Eagle Scout myself, I am pretty annoyed by this. I think it speaks more about how poorly the girl scouts are run and perceived rather than any inequality in girls and boys. I am annoyed because scouts was the one place that we could just be boys and not have to worry about being around girls and trying to impress them or hold back for them. We could talk about disgusting things and get dirty and run around the woods and just be boys. Girls should have this same opportunity but for God's sake keep it seperate. Scouting was such an important part of my life and it would have been a completely different experience if it wasn't just a group of young men being led by male role models. School wasn't like that because there was social pressure and the distraction of girls. In scouts we could focus on making friends, learning things, becoming men. Girls add a whole new dynamic to this, and I don't think it's a good one. I'm just really disappointed by this news. Sorry if this wasn't very well written I'm a bit drunk. I dont mean this to come across as anti-women or anything, I am just tired of seeing things I enjoy changing for the worse for the sake of "equality". Start by changing how the girl scouts are ran, girls have every right to this stuff too but not at the sake of the boys experience. Rant over.

This is a huge cluster-F waiting to happen. What do you think is going to happen at scout camp? All of a sudden it turns into a teen movie and your liability insurance is too much to justify the cost of camp. You throw in a bunch of drama and difficulty just to be politically correct.

[–]Calliope719 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I don't disagree with you. Part of this is due to how incredibly poorly the girl scouts are run. I was a girl scout until high school, and we did cool shit like rock climbing, sailing, hiking, camping, etc. Some of my most precious memories are from late nights around the fire with my gs troop. However, then goddamn cookie time would roll around and it was mandatory for a troop to sell a certain amount. Awkward as shit to sell cookies door to door as a 15 year old girl. "Aren't you a little old for this...?"
My gs leaders started to get older, and crazy adventures turned into knitting and arts and crafts. So I ditched and joined the boy scouts. (Female boy scouts have been around forever, they're called Venture scouts). There were just fewer female leaders willing to do the kind of outdoor adventuring I was interested in.
And you know what? It was awesome, and also awkward. I had a blast, pushed myself to my limits, and learned quite a bit. Learned to rock long green shorts and green knee socks. But there was sexual energy that hadn't been there before. I had to shave my legs, the boys had to hide errant boners. My gs troop had a relaxed freedom I never had with the boys. I never really felt included, and it was completely understandable.
So I don't think you're being anti-woman at all, and I hope I'm not being anti-man at all, but there is a magic to the single gender environment, especially during puberty. The pressure to be attractive, to be 'cool', everything that both genders experience in the company of the other- was just gone. You could just be, and everyone was okay with that.
That being said, I'd totally support all-female troops within the boy scout framework, but maybe not mixed gender troops. As long as kids are hormonal, it could just never be the same. Would you be okay with that?
[–]Kangamangus_92 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Thank you for your perspective on this, I fully appreciate it. I had to laugh at the part about the cookies, in was lucky my troop sold Christmas trees once a year so I didn't have to do the whole popcorn selling thing. To answer your question , I would also fully support all-female troops under the boy scout frame work. If I ever end up having children Infully intend to expose them to scouting regardless of their gender. I believe every child should be able to experience scouting if they wish, but my fear is that mixed gender troops would complicate the experience too much. That goes for boys and girls. Again, thank you for your perspective
[–]Calliope719 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely, and I'm delighted that we have common ground of this issue. I remember tagging along with my brother's troop as a kid to sell Christmas trees. (My dad was the leader). It was magical. And to be fair, the popcorn was tasty! Cookies always seemed more forced and cutthroat, it really wasn't fun at all. It could have just been the adult personalities involed, but it seems to be a consensus at this point. The girl scouts suck, and girls should be able to go get muddy in the woods too. I think that's why there was such a push to let girls join- not bald 'equality', but envy at how much cooler the boy scout programs were. I'm glad you want to get your kids into scouting, it's a wonderful experience. I want to get my (someday) kids involved as well, but I'm hesitate to put them into a mixed group unless there weren't enough kids to support two separate groups. Mixed gender is absolutely a completely different experience.
Cheers, love, and congrats on that eagle!!
[–]Kangamangus_92 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah the boy scout programs were awesome. We went cave diving, rock climbing, we mountain bikes on the Appalachian trail. It was great. I would love it if girls got to experience the same thing. Cheers and love right back at you, and thanks :)

[–]formershitpeasant 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I read in another thread that dens would be segregated by gender, just not troops.
[–]cld8 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I think this was mainly a financial issue. BSA has been losing members for years. This might be a way to reverse or slow down that trend.
[–]Kangamangus_92 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I read that today and it makes sense. It also explains why the girl scouts are so opposed to this, it takes away "customers". I also read today that it will be up to the individual troops to decide if they want to integrate or form same sex troops only which also makes sense. I feel a bit better about it today, but I still feel that mixed gender troops would be a mistake
[–]cld8 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I agree, but let's see how it goes. Boy Scouts in other countries have become co-ed so this isn't exactly uncharted territory. Perhaps many troops will not participate.

Yes I'll wait to see how it goes before judging too much. My younger brother is in scouts now so I have a little bit of insight into how current scouts are responding to this

[–]Kangamangus_92 33 points34 points35 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
They can maintain the structure and the content, but the social dynamic of the group will change completely. The social aspect is arguable the most important part. I was raised by a single mother with sisters and aunt's and grandmas, I had no male role models outside of scouting. It was the one place where I could just be around other guys and learn how to be a man. I am not articulating it very well, and for that I apologize, but scouts being only boys was a huge part of it I think. I can't explain it very well, but it was very important to me. I think girls should have the same opportunity for learning and growing from positive female role models away from the boys. I would feel the same way if the girl scouts were suddenly allowing boys in. It takes something I can't explain away from it.
[–]Catrocantor 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So would you say the scout leader or your fellow scouts played a bigger part in the environment you found helpfull?
[–]Kangamangus_92 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Definitely my fellow scouts, as I spent most of my time with them. The scout leaders were important as well, but in more of a role model sense. My fellow scouts were my brothers, we literally grew up together. I was with the same group of guys from age 6 in cub scouts all the way to 18 when we became eagles (almost all of us got it). I spent countless hours out in the woods with those guys. Hiking, swimming, and camping. We were in the same patrol and would take turns being the patrol leader. We planned meals for our trips, decided where to go and what we wanted to do. We were in the order of the arrow together(a sub organization in the scouts, you had to be nominated IIRC). For part of joining the order of the arrow, we had to do an "ordeal", basically we spent a weekend in the woods with no tent, almost no food (I think we had 2 hard boiled eggs a day), and we had to clear a trail using no tools only our bare hands. We weren't allowed to verbally communicate for the whole weekend either. Basically we went through some tough shit together. We hung out outside of scouts too. My first party was with those guys ( we got drunk and played star wars battlefront, pretty wild stuff). First time smoking weed (we werent bad kids, we were just experimenting). We would prank each other at summer camp, drawing on each others faces and moving cots out into the woods while people slept. We were learning who we were and what we wanted to do with life. I can't express how much those guys mean to me. Brothers in everything but blood.

There's more to scouts then just the training. It was a place where boys could be boys, a place where boys could find themselves as they became men.
On top of that at every meeting where there is a female scout there will have to be a female scout leader. Two adults are required and at least one adult that is the same gender. Now scouts are being led by people who have never been in scouts.

Are girl scouts and boy scouts run by the same parent organization(s)?
I think it's so weird to just not offer up more options, or at least see if girl scouts members, would like to expand what they are doing to be more similar to boy scouts.
I think boys and girls need some time separate from the other gender to just have fun embracing boyhood and girlhood with other boys and girls.
Otherwise, just roll both into one and call it Scouts. Then let boys sell cookies and whatever, and girls camp and whatever. Depending on their own individual interests.
[–]ysidrow 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No, they are independent and run very differently.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In that case, then girl scouts should be trying harder to appeal to girls who don't want to be in girl scouts and would rather go to BOY scouts. ie; find out what girls want from boy scouts in terms of programs and such, then offer that.

They will be keeping boys and girls separate. That's what they say now at least. Still seems silly, they should just make stuff available in Girl Scouts.
The BSA said in a statement on its site that girls can join its Cub Scouts program starting in 2018. It will be up to existing packs to decide whether they will remain all-boys, go co-ed or create all-girl divisions. Cub Scout dens, which are smaller units of six to eight kids within packs, will remain single-gender. As for older girls, the organization says it will announce a program next year that will enable them to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout. It hopes to have the program in place in 2019. "This unique approach allows the organization to maintain the integrity of the single gender model while also meeting the needs of today's families," BSA said.

Based on the reporting I heard last night this is actually a money move by the Boy Scouts, as they've had declining membership for years and are becoming non-viable financially. So they are trying to find a way to get more members and by poaching girls from Girl Scouts they can dramatically expand their dues paying membership.
The Girl Scouts org is NOT happy about this.
In the end it is a money move pure and simple.

[–]fengpi 69 points70 points71 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No, for boy's programs must be forcibly-integrated while girl's programs must be kept unsullied by masculine intrusion.
Much in the same way that boys and girls must have equal access to education, supplemented by special pull-out programs for girls only.
They need everything to be phare & ekwil, you see!
[–]TibsKirk 22 points23 points24 points 8 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link
I do like the idea of teaching young girls how to be more self-sufficient while teaching young boys a few things that train them to be nurturing and loving fathers. But I suspect that merge would result in attempts to feminize boys, eliminate competition, and reward participation for participation's sake.
[–]EricAllonde 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
As a former scout myself, I suspect you're right.
The minute women or girls are brought into an organisation like this, everything changes. You can no longer have bad language, dirty jokes, raucous behaviour, adventurous/mildly risky activities. Basically everything that makes scouts appealing to boys and most of what makes it beneficial to them - it all has to go.
Suddenly everyone's walking on eggshells, worried that if they do or say the wrong thing a girl might report "I'm offended" to external third parties and next thing you know everyone "responsible" for the offence has their backs against the wall.
It's the end of the scouts as we knew them.

As a Scout in the UK I did hiking/mountaineering, shooting, archery, camping, pioneering, everything the guys did. And so did the rest of the girls. Because surprisingly the girls who are drawn to Scouting do not tend to be very feminine at all & would very much like to join in the activities that are already being done in Boy Scouts.

They can't. It is impossible. Sexual harassment will now be a concern.
Boys are largely independent in boy scouts. They can get in groups and disappear into the woods during campouts. Once you introduce girls, they will need to be protected from the behavior of the boys, add they will no longer be allowed to be unsupervised.

Also, even if the stats are accurate, the problem is STILL not integration. It's sexual harassment culture. I'm aware that false claims happen & that we need to have more determent from filing a false claim but the solution is not segregation & it never has been.
[–]bufedad 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Also, even if the stats are accurate, the problem is STILL not integration. It's sexual harassment culture.
False accusations are a problem of sexual harassment culture? Boys being denied access to boy scouts? Those are problems with sexual harassment culture?
Do you even listen to yourself before you try to make that argument?
Boys aren't being denied access wtf like all (edit: most of, don't take this literally. It's maybe 9/10) the scouts I meet are dudes? I used to get my own room for being the only "girl" lmao. When I went to KISC in 2015, one of my Leaders (1 of 4 with us) was the first female Leader they'd had go up the mountain (one of their harder routes) with us. I will admit that there do seem to be more female Leaders in the younger groups (Beavers, Cubs) but then there's more male Leaders at Scouts & Explorers.
And yes false accusations are a part of sh culture - the part where women are told that men are monsters & that accusations can be used as weapons.
Look I'm not gonna say there are definitely no problems but from personal experience they are NOWHERE NEAR what you are telling me (also statistics can be manipulated very easily to show what you want - I tend not to trust any). And they can be solved without integration itself becoming an issue.
[–]bufedad 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Boys aren't being denied access wtf like all
There is a waiting list of 35,000 waiting to get into scouts. They can't get enough leaders, because males are afraid of false accusations (the same reason they are fleeing the teaching profession). 3/4 of new scouts are female. Yes... boys are being denied access to the scouting.
like all (edit: most of, don't take this literally. It's maybe 9/10) the scouts I meet are dudes?
and? I've shown you the stats. Your personal experience isn't relevant.
There is no sexual harassment culture. Unless you have proof otherwise.
Look I'm not gonna say there are definitely no problems but from personal experience they are NOWHERE NEAR what you are telling me
I've already proven that there are. The fact that you want to ignore it, is on you.
Never? I guess that would explain the reluctance of men to be leaders. The fact that they are afraid of false accusations of sexual harassment.
The 35,000 long waiting list.
The fact that more girls are allowed to join boy scouts each year (3 to 1 over boys) than boys are.
Thank God it's not a problem.

That won't be in line with how bathrooms (toilets) are handled. Or how things were handled in South Africa in Apartheid times. Whites, mind you, were able to enter toilets for non-whites, but not wise versa.

It's not that simple, BSA and GSA are two different organizations, truthfully I think it's okay for BSA to accept girls because GSA doesn't teach girls anything except how to sell cookies. Though BSA probably should just become Scouts
[–]Ordinate1 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
And if boys want to learn how to sell cookies?
I can see there being two different groups with two different focii, but they shouldn't say one is only for girls and one is only for boys.
[–]Wolffey 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's fine, but combining BSA and GSA is not how it will be done
[–]Ordinate1 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's fine, as long as they both allow both girls and boys in... at which point, their names quit making sense :)
Exactly

I'm a female-to-male transgender person who came out later in life so I never went to any clubs exclusive to boys, but I think it fucked me up a lot not having that kind of experience, as a result I have trouble socializing. Social situations are very stressful for me and I just don't understand how to bond with people.
I can only imagine how this is going to affect young boys.

... And now the Girl Scouts have issued an official criticism of the decision:

Time to form a new scouts I guess.

Girl scouts is an awful and poorly run organization. Girls who want to do outdoor activities are left out because girl scouts makes them bake cookies. This isn't about equality but about how girl scouts needs new leadership
[–]Brusanan 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If they keep the genders separated then I really see no problem with it.
[–]HenryCurtmantle 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I saw a group of boy scouts at a railway station recently. Their 'leaders' were obese women.
Females will destroy the scouting ethic just as surely as they have destroyed every male institution and every muscular, risk-taking activity and undertaking.
Women are kill-joys. They expunge every morsel of risk, adventure and fun from life and emasculate the male in the process. The education system is a dreary exam factory to help girls get worthless qualifications whilst robbing boys of their birthright.
Now they plan to kill off the scouting movement. If you complain, then you're a misogynist dinosaur.
Boys have nothing to look forward to. All their teachers are women, their dads have been sent packing by the family courts, sports are being taken over by women, and if they get a job, they'll be working for a woman who can't manage people. The lucky ones won't be accused of rape.

[–]CatManDontDo 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Do they not have pioneers or whatever it was for girls that was more like boy scouts? For the girls who didn't want to sell cookies and sew? My sister did it and loved it.
[–]redmagistrate50 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The venture scouts. Which is effectively a longer lasting extension of boy scouts that lets girls in. Lots of fun, especially since when you do it right you can keep the deadweight out and do the really fun stuff.
[–]themolestedsliver 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I might think this dude is a twat but he does raise a good point.
why can we have girl scouts that make KILLINGS on cookies, yet have to make boy scouts unisex?
[–]jmac323 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Because people are fucking annoying.
[–]letsgetfunkymonkey 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I guess I'll be the detractor here and say I've got not problem with this. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are significantly different organization and focus on very different things. If you are a kid who likes the activities that Boy Scouts undertake, then join the boy scouts. If you're a kid who like the activities that Girl Scouts do, then join the Girl Scouts.
Personally, I don't think it goes far enough since they're still planning to keep the boys and girls separate. They're kids. Just let them have fun and do what they want to do.

Strange question: I thought girls were always allowed in boy scouts. Are boys allowed in Girl Scouts? Also, why can't we just have "The Scouts"?
[–]bufedad 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Boy scouts allows boys to learn how to lead and be independent with minimal guidance from adults.
When you introduce girls, girls will have weaponized sexual harassment claims. They will need to be protected, and the boys will need to be protected from them. Minimal guidance becomes constant supervision. Thay destroys the very concept of boy scouts.

Not a single problem? Ever? Are you being serious?
How about this, there are more girls are accepted into boy scouts than boys... 3/4 of accepted applicants are girls Telegraph
How about this, men are afraid of being leaders in the cub and boy scouts now for fear of false accusations. Telegraph
There are not enough spots open for scouts now with a huge waiting list (35,000). Telegraph
There seems to be a lot of problems for there not being any problems...

I'd never heard of any of this. There were about 5 girls in my ~40 troop (and having been a Beaver Scout Young Leader 3y ago in a troop with NO girls I do find your statistics a bit doubtful, from personal experience), leaders were guys, we never experienced a problem. I was talking about personal experience. And yes there is a leader shortage but I've never heard it connected to sh claims til now - most of the leaders I run into are dudes.

Because rational and reasonable parents have been boycotting the Boy Scouts of America ever since they started allowing homosexuals and transexuals into the BSA, and now the BSA is hurting financially, so BSA administration went after some girl money.
