Could men marrying down be contributing to high divorce rates?

Now, this is a random thought I had that I thought would spark good conversation.

It’s common to hear how women practice hypergamy and men “marry down”. It is said that men don’t care about a woman’s financial status, education level, or her career. The most important thing is how physically attractive and agreeable she is.

So, if this is true, wouldn’t it be expected that opportunistic women would take advantage of this? Make themselves attractive and be very agreeable with men who have status and money with the sole intention of marrying him to gain access to his assets? After a while, he would become unnecessary as she would eventually become entitled to a portion of his assets, resulting in her filing for divorce?

If this is the case, wouldn’t it be wise to be a bit more selective in choosing a significant other?
