Legally, at least in most of the US, you have to return the ring, as it is a conditional gift, and if the condition (of marriage) is not being met, then you have no right to the gift.

Note some states have "at fault" clauses, where if the giver called off the wedding, the ring may be kept.

No, I think that would confuse people into thinking you were getting married, since the ring likely only fits your ring finger.

The only way I can imagine someone keeping it is if it was a $200 ring that didn't look like a stereotypical engagement ring.

I have rejected multiple proposals. I did not touch the ring they offered me. If I had touched it I would have given it back.

I believe in court because it was a gift it's not easy to get it back from a broken proposal but it really depends on the state. For example: "The law applies uniformly to all the diversity in relationships in California. Ultimately in California, if a woman receives an engagement ring, and breaks it off, she must give the ring back. Conversely, if the man calls off the wedding, the woman gets to keep the ring."

Huh? Do you mean keeping the ring, or demanding to be given the ring you never got, after the breakup? Most women give the ring back, some may keep it and sell it if there’s some kind of hard feelings, but I’ve literally never heard of anyone demanding a ring after a breakup.

It was a gift, so it's not like the person who proposed should demand for it to be given back. Should each person return all the gifts that were given during the relationship to their ex when they break up? Just bought a ring, the money is gone now and once given away it's his choice what to do with it.

I've never known anyone who hasn't given it back, I've heard of an outlier case that got traction on Reddit because it was an outlier but that's it. The exception proves the rule.

I have no idea where this idea is coming from, but no, I have never heard of anyone demanding a ring after a breakup.

If an engagement is broken I would offer to return the ring, but honestly at that point nobody wants the ring for any reason. The resale value of engagement jewelry is trash.

Or she agreed and somethings changed and now she wants to cancel the engagement?

First case - unheard of. Second one - yeah, i have heard it.

Every state is different. Some states say once she says yes, the condition of the gift is met. Other states say the condition of the gift is the marriage.
