Sounds like young people to me. Some people take longer to grow out of the “mean girl” phase. No it’s not normal in all groups of women. Or even most. Does it happen. Sure.

I’ll say “bad” things about some of my friends “behind their back” but I say it to their face too. Usually out of concern with another friend to see if we can try to help them out or how we can disengage from drama or something else.

For the record, no this doesn’t happen with all groups of female friends, but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t had experiences like this in middle and high school.

im an autistic woman, and while ive noticed it heavily and felt excluded from neurotypical women my whole life- i think “gossip” serves i assume an evolutionary purpose for social bonding. and to be fair ive seen plenty of normie men do it as well.

Well, let me ask you this. Why would this one experience make you wonder if all girl friend groups are shallow? What about all the other times you've seen girls acting normally toward each other?

To answer your question, no, not all female friend groups are shallow. Sometimes insecure people are unhappy with themselves and take it out on others. It's not gender specific but men and women tend to express it differently and you've seen one way that girls do it.

It's okay that you didn't step in, you were surprised and didn't know what to do. But the good thing is now that you've seen this situation play out you can decide how you would handle it in the future.

I haven’t had this experience but then I’ve always had kind of alt/non-traditional friend groups. But I just joined a women’s volunteer organization with a strong social component and we’re going to brunch saturaday so I’ll report back if I observe this behavior among the normies 🫡

Some but not all. I moved around a lot and from my experience it can be more or less prevalent depending on the area. Sounds like these girls need to grow up though, this is such middle school behavior.

My little girl group trio has been friends for nearly 20 years, and we've never done that. Some people are two-faced gossips, some are like that when they're young and grow out of it, some don't some never were. It's not a women thing, it's a people thing.

This sounds awful. And extremely childish. I don’t think any female friend groups over 25 years of age would ever act like this. And to be truly honest, I only remember stuff like this happening when I was in elementary school

For reference I went to an all-girl high school.

Some groups were like that, yes. Others weren't. There was a "like that" group with one morbidly obese girl with asthma (not common at the school) whose family would throw around a lot of money to take her friends on vacations and stuff. They somehow never guessed that this could attract a bunch of girls who just wanted free vacations and didn't actually like her/talked shit behind her back. One started dating her lifelong crush behind her back.

Before you start feeling too bad for her she was extremely superficial too and showed clear favoritism for thinner/pretty girls in her "friend" group. Don't assume that someone who has conveniently wound up in a group of catty girls isn't catty in her own way. Like attracts like.

I rarely enjoy the company other women due to the amount of gossiping and mean girl behaviors. I would not say all female friend groups are that way but definitely the majority are unpleasant due to the drama, in my experience.
