It is at best neutral and at worst a negative for your SMV.

It's good for your RMV because it (hopefully) means you make lotsa ca$h and have nearly infinite job security.

Inhabiting the negative stereotypes of a coder is far worse than being a coder. (Negative stereotypes are inwardly focused, bad hygiene, mansplainy neckbeard).

I work in finance, but i do not look like the kind of finance guy that would attract a woman looking for a human ATM and a white picket fence. I look like a fuckboy musician who spends all his money on clothes (my drug dealer was shocked i had a “real” job and wasn’t just a trustafarian, and i could have kissed her for saying that). This all is by design.

I have found if you combine a good high status job associated with boring people with a look that is NOT Boring, you do well.

Programmer (insert appropriate, more specific title) at Google or Facebook? Great for getting girls who went to great schools and understand prestige because they knew people that interned there, etc.

Programmer at Random Craphole? Maybe you can try something more vague like "work in tech." Probably won't matter much if the rest of your profile is good (makes you look interesting to the girl) and if you're a good looking guy.

The job itself does not matter.

Its how tyou present that job.

If asked what you do, are you enthusiastic about it. Or do you already believe it makes you low value so behave low value.

Its not what you say, its how you say it.

If the job does not inspire you and you are not passionate. Then find a new job.

Don't put your job up front -- flashing around what kind of money you make is only going to attract women you don't want.

It really depends on what kind of woman you're looking for tho. If you're looking for sociable feminine hotties, omit any mention of computering entirely -- it's not a "sexy" or masculine pursuit.

If you're looking to omit to that small niche of similarly-interested nerdy broads (which is a much smaller pool of women, be warned), go ahead and mention it as one of your interests, though I'd still be hesitant to be like "o hey this job makes bankroll".

Yeah if you look like an IT nerd, the stereotype then yes.

I think SMV it not so much about your job but everything around it.

If you have an IT job but go to the gym 3 times a week, do jiu jitsu 2 times a week, like playing the piano and reading books... then it doesn't matter.

But, if you're boring at best, and not very interesting. Having a bog standards IT job just might put you into "one of those guys" stereotype where they can already picture you on the PS4 not giving her any attention.

It's all about how you carry yourself.

I tell women who show any interest in me when i get a "provider" vibe from them, that I look at spreadsheets all day for my job.

Tends to ease them away so yes, It ain't sexy, especially when you pitch it as just enough to pay the bills.

TBH most won't care what you do, only what you earn.

IMHO, it's neutral so I would leave it out of OLD profiles because no one is going to date you just because you're a programmer, and there may be a *few* superficial girls who won't go out with you because they automatically assume you're a nerd. OTOH, I wouldn't stress too much about it IRL because your profession is much less important for initial attraction than everything else about you e.g. your looks, personality, etc. So once someone actually meets you, everything else about you matters much more.

FWIW, I work in a pretty high status profession (the type that *does* get you laid by mentioning it), and when I first meet women at a bar or club, I often either avoid bringing up my work, or tell them I work in tech :-) Precisely because it's a neutral thing so I can tell if they're actually interested in me as a person. Plus it stops them from spending the rest of the time asking for stories from my job (I'd rather get to know her). I also knew a guy who was a naval fighter pilot a-la Top Gun, who used to tell women he was an accountant, and a bad-ass former green beret who simply told people he "worked in security". For the same reasons. Using your job to get laid isn't always the best plan, and if you're a cool guy in other aspects, you don't need it.

I feel totally neutral about it. I certainly would not reject a guy simply for being a programmer. I have dated at least two that I can recall. They seemed to be financially stable and liked their jobs.
